Not a POE fan, but I think they are currently above Diablo. Diablo 2 R will help revive the Diablo franchise, and close the gap a bit. But will need more D2 content and or D4 to be amazing to fully catch up.

The main difference its pacing. Diablo 3 its horrible. Path of exile its great but the pacing its not for me to fast, mobs dont put a fight you die in one hit from something you barely see. Diablo 2 has the perfect combat pacing, just like my oter favored ARPG grim dawn.

Hey, mostly agree with what you said, but you missed what I and most other players would consider the life of path of exile, The End Game, once you start getting into path maps is everything, ive been playing for years and I would say 75% of my time playing has been mapping if not more, end game bosses gearing and stuff like that that only come from end game.

Personally I'm more of a casual gamer, so Diablo is much easier for me to get into and have some fun. PoE is just overwhelming. You start a character and you're pretty much lost as you start playing. And I'm not really interested in looking up a bunch of guides just to enjoy a game. Obviously this might not be the case for everyone, but for me Diablo will always be the better game.

Just a youtube video for a beginners guide or something like that, and you're all set to go really. Maybe not the end game stuff or extras, but overall. Would help if the tutorial was a bit more intuitive in the game though, yeah. Awesome take on POE. This is very true as I have played the game completely f2p before finally making a big purchase back in 2018 after 5 yrs of playing it. Bought some really nice supporter packs and some stash tabs to show my support for the game. I grew up playing D2 extensively, and have also played D3 and it's pretty fun as a couch coop for console however I'm not really a huge fan of linear progression... But that is the point of PoE, "you have to figure it out" . It doesn't hold your hands, it is more old school in this approach than anything, which many of us like, as the game forces you to experiment. If you don't want to experiment, there is dozens if not thousands of build guides you can follow and will provide end game viable gameplay...This is the beauty of PoE, no 2 builds are exactly the same, even if you follow a guide. If you are dying too quick then your resistances and health/ES pool's are ridiculously low.

But I haven't played in 2020 and only now I decided to get back to the game and AGAIN, I having tons of fun. Can't recommend PoE enough!

An amazing review! Thank you very much for the great content. 😻 I'd like to mention that PoE has a thing called Standard league, which was exactly what I started my experience with. It is the place where ALL players' characters end up after temporary league ends with all the new mechanics from it. So it is exactly for players, who prefer more permanent gameplay, if you don't mind that the new content and new characters that you created in fresh league will be added to it 3 months later. When I started playing PoE, it was the first game I was *crazy* excited about for it's complexity. I was so eager to discover my skill path, develop my characters, and destroy the content. My first stash purchase was after 3 years of playing irregularly. D3 got boring for me after 15 hours of gameplay. If I were 6 yo, I would enjoy D3 longer. Maybe. Very nice game though. But I am glad that I never purchased it. For me it would be a waste. But, chacun à son goût.

Yea I get you. I started with embracing the fact that the endgame in path of exile is far far away so it didnt really frustrate me that I couldnt kill any bosses. But I kept learning new things from League to League until I could look up specific problems and find answers to them online. I tried using a complete-guide early on and it ruins everything because you dont understand a thing and just do what the guide tells you. When you played enough by urself to actually understand what a guide tells you, you are able to add your own twist to it. Usually you dont have enough currency to follow the guide one by one anyway, so you still can be quite creative in that regard. But of course there is nothing wrong with loving Diablo, too^^

Yeah, I think the video doesn't do a good job of describing just how complicated and hardcore PoE has become. You simply cannot play it without a guide or references. He's right in that you will benefit immensely from checking out meta builds in Diablo 3, but in PoE consulting external resources is a requirement. We're not even talking about trading. Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with complexity and how PoE does it. But if we're going to compare it with Diablo 3, we need to emphasize just how opposite they are in terms of complexity. The difference really is night and day. I think if you're coming from D3 and want to step things up a notch, Grim Dawn and Last Epoch are better options. Those games also practically require consulting build guides, especially for your first couple of builds because you can screw up or at least hamper your progress. But they're much more forgiving and understandable than PoE. Especially Last Epoch. Sure, PoE is free, but the complete Grim Dawn bundle is often massively discounted on Steam. Last Epoch, not so much as it's still in Early Access, but its skill-based variety lets you have fun experimenting and seeing cool skills way sooner than PoE.

Sure you will do incredible inefficient things and of course you should have the brain capacity to skill fire damage, if you are doing fire damage. You will hit a wall sooner or later after the campaign, but I dont think it is inherently a bad thing. It gives you sth to strive for if you want. You "can" spend hours and hours and delve deep into the insane complexity that poe offers if you choose to. And if not, you still had about 20hours of fun up to that point.

I enjoy both games. Diablo 2 and 3 is a really relaxing to play. I like that I don't have to refer to any guides in Diablo 3 - I can just play. It's honestly a pretty chill game. Not exactly the game you want to play if you want to be challenged. But if you don't have a lot of time and want to see everything the game can offer, it doesn't take that long to get to the highest torment level in diablo 3. I did it last season with a Demon Hunter and I think I spent like 3 days. That was fine for me. I don't need to grind endlessly for months in order to enjoy a game - I don't have that kind of time anymore anyway. Path of Exile is really nice, but it does feel a bit heavy if I have not been playing for awhile. I wish I could pre-load my skill tree advancement into the game and have it auto-level my skill tree as I keep playing. Maybe that sounds silly, but would smooth out the flow of the game for me. It's kind of impossible to see the forest through the trees and make the correct long-term decisions on a skill tree while you're just leveling - that's a huge ask. For a new build, how do I know what balance of stats and offense vs defense and special skills do I need right away? Who could really know that so much meta information you can't possible know when starting? It's just far easier to play a build that someone has already worked out from the top-down in advance. I'm sure Path of Exile 2 will help a bit in this area because upgrading gear while leveling is probably one of the most annoying things to do in that game - it's not convenient at all. With currency being as rare as it is, it just feels bad to spend lots of currency to change leveling items you know you're going to throw away very quickly, so I just don't even bother but it makes the loot game feel very bad while leveling. Path of Exile feels a lot better once you get into maps, probably because I've beaten the campaign so many times I am sort of sick of it now. Usually when starting a new ladder season, I just want to get to maps as fast as possible. The campaign feels like a huge wall to me at this point. It'll be nice to play a brand new campaign when Path of Exile 2 comes out. I'm sure it'll also be designed better than the first one too, which is one of the reasons it feels so rough to play over and over.

PoE essentially forces you into a few builds if you want to run maps. Diablo 3 doesn’t do this at all, you could even play random builds you just make up and you’re still able to run greater rifts. You can have fun in PoE with whatever build you want, but to even get to the endgame you're already meeting the endgame challenges. D2 can be played through to the end of the first difficulty fairly easily. In Diablo 3, I have to be a Korean Master level SC2 player to keep the APMs high enough for my horde to be effective. I have had far more issues getting (meta) builds to work in Diablo 3 due to the ridiculous button mashing required than I ever have with anything in PoE. And in both games, you can control the difficulty, meaning any challenges that are pushing you away from the game are there because you chose for them to be. You missed some of the major points about PoE's endgame. At the end of maps are a lot of well designed and sometimes difficult boss encounters. Getting there and beating them feels great for the first time. The power curve you get from barely getting by to absolutely blasting maps and melting bosses at warp speed is what a lot of players strive for. Huge negative though: it takes a lot of time commitment to get there. Either in overall play hours over the life of the game to become a very knowledgeable player, or in league game hours of weeks or even more than a month to get there.

It is just that reading guides and wikis for 10 days and then training for weeks and then waiting for IDK what to go the final end game which is mega complicated and then again reading other guides and then starting a PhD program to know how to improve the Duelist.........IT IS TOO MUCH. And at some point after just finishing a story and reaching a let me say "almost high level " - I just left PoE. But again - it is a really great game for sure. Nicely created. Smart. Rich. You should make a comparison video with Last Epoch aswell added in with Diablo/PoE. Ive played D3 and PoE since both were in beta/early acces/original release and i must say if Last Epoch gets a better endgame then they currently have and realign the difficulity (currently its to easy for veteran players) it will beat both out of the water i think. Ive heard they are working on 3 new endgame systems atm in addition to the 2 current ones. They've done a amazing job of mixing up the complexity of PoE with the class system of Diablo and they've taken a mix of both crafting systems and improved upon them.

You missed the fact that Diablo 3 seasons have a different unique passive effect or rule change each season. Similar to the leagues but to a lesser extent, there's still something new about each season. It allows for slightly (sometimes majorly) flexed build variety each season. It's still not huge, but the video makes it sound like each season is identical.

  • @endersblade

    @endersblade

    3 жыл бұрын

The difference though is once that season has passed, that unique passive or rules change is gone forever. In PoE, the leagues eventually get rolled into the 'Standard' server, where your league characters end up after the league is over, and where the 'forever' people (people who don't just roll for leagues and then quit until the next league) play as well. They usually appear as events and such on maps, although sometimes modified slightly to work within that model rather than being the central focus as it is in a league.

I mean there are similarities in the diablo franchise, but Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 are such different games that, when you say diablo, I dont even have something solid popping in my head. However one thing they have in common is that classes are actually classes and they have identity. That is a very significant deal breaker for me with PoE, regardless of the other factors, I dont want my character abilities and playstyle to be entirely defined with items. One more thing to add with PoE and to a lesser extent Diablo 3 is that, the game plays a certain way. The time to kill in those games are very low, especially with PoE, the game basically devolves to, kill your entire screen with each ability and the game fills the screen for you again. In Diablo 2, this is a lot different. Monsters have a lot more character and a lot more meat. You are expected to be in combat with the same monsters, you need to kite, you need to crowd control, you need to debuff them and escape their abilities. I also very much prefer this over the others.

I have tried both and tend to end back up at D3 and enjoy a season every so often. One of the main factors was the ease of gameplay and sense of accomplishment I could get out of small burst gaming sessions with my limited free time. On the other hand, I was a silver supporter for POE but was unable to play it properly for the first 2 years, just due to the horrendous server support and bad netcode, struggled to play it from my country. While it is better now and I am able to play now, the gameplay just doesn't grab me as much; and the trade system still confused me sometimes. To be fair D3 was horrendous at launch as well, but luckily the second game director helped get the game back to a good state with the expansion and then helped slip in all those massive content patches. Either way I am looking forward to both new versions of their respective franchises. They have definitely learnt a lot from each other over these last few years. At the end of the day ARPG players can't complain as we are spoilers for choice and there is a game to suite everyone's needs and playstyle.

Good review. I prefer Path of Exile now, after starting on Diablo 3. I like the cinematics of Diablo 3. You can see that Blizzard is a top notch studio with great cinematics. I really like the story of Diablo 3 too. As for gameplay itself, I prefer Path of Exile. That would be the game I would keep going back to. I've played a couple different builds for different leagues, and each one has had their own flare and challenge. My best one so far was the Vortex Ocultist, she was super powerful. I'm looking forward to Path of Exile 2 and the change with sockets. The part that annoys me with Path of Exile are the loot drops and that you need to have 5 or 6 link gear to really get going in endgame content in Path of Exile. And that is hard to get. I haven't played for a little while, mainly because I am waiting for Path of Exile 2 at this point and the change in sockets.

Hi! pretty interesting to read a new player PoV as someone who has probably over 10k hours in PoE. You shouldn't get your hopes too high for the socket changes making it easier because links will still exist, but tied to gems instead. So you won't chase 6L items but chase 6L gems instead, it's much better from a gear upgrade PoV but not much of a change. However, i believe you may lack experience in PoE which is why you struggle to get a 6L. There are very easy and time efficient ways to get a 6L : there are divination cards you can target farm for 6L in specific maps / leveling zones, just farming vaal side areas which have insane drop rate of 6L, corrupting strongboxes, etc etc... I completely understand that if you don't know it then it looks difficult, so I hope this little bit of information may help you when you play again :)

My biggest issue with PoE is that it's super deep in terms of builds, mechanics and content but the second-to-second gameplay just feels worse than Diablo. Abilities don't feel punchy or exciting, enemies die with canned death animations circa 1998, and combat generally doesn't feel very exciting. Compared to Diablo 3 which is super god damn shallow, but fighting enemies feels satisfying. Enemies go flying, you can blow the skeletons out of them with crits, etc. Abilities feel super satisfying to hit enemies with (I'm looking at you, Locust Swarm) because there's so many ways for them to die. If PoE and Diablo could just have a baby, I don't think I'd play anything else. I keep hoping GGG will revise the combat of PoE to make it feel fun. Add physics, rework enemy models, rework visuals for the abilities, etc. Just polish the combat and make it fun. Instead, PoE is about becoming so overpowered that you can actually sort of skip the gameplay; you just blow up the entire screen instantly killing everything, and then move as quickly as you can to the next screen over and repeat. It becomes a loot slot machine and sort of removes the gameplay/combat aspect. By just deleting every mob instantly it's all about what drops. The drops are always a super important part of an ARPG, but it should be AFTER the combat. The game is about fighting large groups of enemies, and at a point in PoE it stops feeling like "fighting" and more like "instantly deleting". If your build takes any more time than that, it's considered trash.

And with me it just seems that each offers the difference in what I'm feeling the urge for at that time. If I feel the urge to "really get into the meat" of playing I like PoE for all the overwhelming possibilities of synergizing builds, abilities, resources and and slots. It's a game I love to get technical with. When I just want to mindlessly bash heads, sort through seasonal treasures, and play fun events for storage tabs, cosmetics, ect I absolutely love Diablo 3 for that. They both serve their purpose and I absolutely love both of them. They're both basically the same game, just different sides to the same coin. Heads or tails, it doesn't matter. Yeah diablo 2 is still my personal favorite, the thing about path of exile is that it went too far for my taste with all the mechanics.. a huge amount of systems, interactions and gameplay loops.. more complexity doesnt necessarily make for a better game experience.

I've got a little over 3000 hours in PoE and have only spent about 40 dollars. All on various stash tabs. And you really undersold the PoE Atlas, it's infinitely more interesting and dynamic than D3's greater rifts.

Atlas isn't even much different to rifts. What makes actual difference is league mechanics to embellish endless dull swamps and ruins with millions of monsters who die without even getting on your screen. That's what diablo should learn. New gameplay loops like Delve, Heists, Expeditions, Blights etc.

It will always be a "consumer's taste" point of view. Both are amazing games by themselves, I've played both and currently playing Path of Exile as my main game since Bestiary league, getting better at it as leagues pass by. From my own experience, the most important breakpoint between both games is content delivery. In PoE, you get fresh and new content every 3 months and although is true that you have to start all over again that puts you in the same spot as everyone else in terms of what you can do from the starting point, everyone starts from zero and progress towards the end-game content. However, although Diablo II is one of the best games I've ever played, has been stuck in terms of content delivery. And the thing you have "fixed builds" doesn't provide build diversity to the game as you mentioned with the Paladin character, for example. PoE has that advantage, you can take whichever class you want and make it so you can play whatever you want with it, that's not unique but it gives you freedom for your character development, which IMO is very important in games. With all of this, I must insist that this will always be a "consumer's taste" point of view. I love and hate both games (they are not perfect games, aren't they?), but I prefer PoE all the way.

Path of exile is better but it's more complicated if u don't have a lot of time go for Diablo I can't believe the time some people put into poe it's incredible I won't take anything away from either franchise they're both good. I personally don't have enough time to play and max out a character in POE but maybe have time to slowly play a good story line on Diablo happy gaming dudes!

The skill tree of PoE is where I practiced linear programming, and in the process of inputting so much data, found out that I make 1.75% clerical errors. The game in PoE extends beyond the game itself because of the depth.

I love both games for different reasons, but I think I prefer PoA because of the freedom in customisation and it's deeper lore. However what I hate in both games is the RNG in crafting. I mean it's ok that the loot has random stat bonuses, but it's really frustrating when you spend a ton of resources crafting your "perfect" gear and still don't get perfect results.

The problem with PoEs mechanics isn't really, that they are too complex. It's that they often make no intuitive sense and modifiers use a lot of inconsistent wording. There are literally 3+ functionally different versions of "attack speed" "crit chance" "physical damage" and "energy shield". The terminology around leech could almost not be made more confusing, even though it's mechanically pretty straight forward.

I've been trying to understand what it is about isometric ARPGs that people enjoy. I'm pretty new to the genre and on the surface it seems like something I'd maybe like. But when compared to other loot based games these always come up short for me in the gameplay. Grim Dawn in particular is one that I tried and dropped in 2016 but I've returned to see if there's something I missed. No, there isn't. Click on enemies until they die, drink a potion if I'm even remotely close to being threatened. Compare loot for a minute, then figure out what the fuck I'm supposed to be doing about leveling, then move on. Most games it's the action that requires attention but in ARPGs it feels to me that comparing numbers and figuring out builds is what takes up your mind and the gameplay is just clicking on enemies. It just doesn't click with me. If I'm gonna worry about minmaxing then I at least want something to do in order to make that minmaxing worth it. Destiny 2 for example has fun gunplay imo and that's half the reason I return, the other half being the loot and story aspects. However I then tried Diablo 2 in all its 800x600 glory, completely vanilla. Something clicked. I don't know what it is, but it did. I couldn't care less about the story and initially I was getting pretty tired of clicking on enemies. Partially my fault for going the Paladin route. But at some point in act 2 I broke an urn and out popped a rune, a lucky drop. A minute later I had the same luck and a regular enemy dropped a rune. Something about that got to me. Later in part 3 I was looking for an Eth rune to make a Malice flail. I figured I'd get it eventually, didn't wanna bother grinding. Headed out in to the jungle and the first fuckin enemy I killed dropped an Eth. But what really got me interested I think is the lack of leveling depth other ARPGs have. I really don't feel like learning all that shit and having to follow build guides just to click enemies more efficiently. Diablo 2 to me has just enough depth to not be confusing and isn't completely lopsided when compared to the actual gameplay. What I mean is that it doesn't go from gigabrained build crafting to mindless clicking and give me whiplash from switching between the two like other ARPGs. Maybe you just have to grow up with Diablo to have an affinity for the modern games, idk. I was born in 1998 so I've had zero exposure to the genre until now, particularly Diablo. I've heard Diablo 3 is good for beginners too but given its history and Blizzard's questionable decisions I'd rather not. Trying to hurry through and finish D2 before Resurrected releases.
