Patek Philippe and Prestige - Business Geniuses - Federico Talks Watches
In this episode of Federico Talks Watches we talk about one of the most prestigious watch brands Patek Philippe. Patek Philippe are widely considered the top of the pyramid when it comes to the watch industry, why is that? I think it little to do with their watches and a lot to do with how they run their business... Everything from their distribution network to their famous application process.

You know what? Having music play after the video ends is very underrated. It's the perfect soundtrack for scrolling down and reading the comments. Better than radio silence. Dunno if that was your intention, but it worked ;) Great vid, love learning about the watch industry from personal experience.

I don't know where to start! This was simply one of the most informative/enlightening videos I have ever seen. The inside information you reveal is incredible. What a story/anecdote about the infamous Application System! Your assessment of Patek Philippe is spot on. There are other Swiss brands that offer, IMHO, more horological-historical prestige than PP, like Blancpain(1735), Vacheron Constantin (1755), Breguet (1775) and Girard-Perregaux (1791). All these aforementioned watch manufacturing companies are moreover more innovative than PP, IMHO. OK... let the debate rage on! ;-) And now for some word play: PPP = Patek Philippe Police (because of the Application and Investigation System). The Stern Family is indeed stern! Bravo, Federico!
Great video Federico! Keep em' coming. You're doing a great job dropping knowledge!
This was a very informative vid. Top quality.
You really nailed this one, Federico! You always seem to suprise me with your topics. Keep producing excellent stuff!
Very informative. Thanks for dropping some knowledge for us, Federico!
Great video. I keep learning from you... Cheers!
Great video. This amount of in-depth discussion is what will separate you from others.
Very informative! Thanks Fede
Super interesting insight. Great review!
Learnt so much on your videos, well done Federico!
This crossed my mind quite a few times; thanks for another great video!
Great video!! Very useful...
Dudeeeee Federico one of the best pieces of content you've made! I didn't know anything about this. Thank you! Amazing business strategy from Patek.
Great video! Two thumbs up!
Excellent video Federico, very informative. You are a true proffessional
Very interesting. Thank you.
Wow, didnt know about the application process... Great video!
great vid Fed!
Great video and great to hear more of that song that gets stuck in my head twice a week!
Tell people they can't have something, and they'll want it even more.
Great video Federico! I had no idea about this. Grazie per aver condiviso questo con noi:D May I ask what polo is that please? Grazie mille. Un abbraccio.
Great video Federico. Wasn't aware of the application required to purchase some of the Patek watches. Thanks:)
I love their marketing approach. Simply perfect marketing execution. And quality is there to back it up. Great job Federico. Thumbs up
Great vid, federico. I'm relatively new to watch collecting and have wondered for a while why even the most basic pateks are thousands more than similar pieces from other brands. this shed some light on it.
Federico you're the new king of youtube !!! The new Pontif
awesoem channel, its hard to find good watch channels like this.
Another informative video.
Great video! :D
Great advice Federico I would have never thought of this.
Interesting insight!
I inherited a Patek from my grandfather, and while I love it, and the brand, nothing excites me like Lange & Sohne.
Fantastic video, love this type of content as I know nothing of extremely high end horology.
Learned a few new things about the brand, thanks Federico!

Fed personally in my humble opinion you are one of my favorite and very passionate like my self when the topic is watches hands down patek Philippe is the best end of conversation.
Love your watch talks! :) Miles away from Archie! You're unbiased and use the right words!
Digging the music. Who did the track?
Wow, application required never knew, thanks for interesting content
Another informative video. Anyone that has a little knowledge about watches knows about Patek. When people know you "collect" they ask, do you have a Patek. So, the marketing is amazing. Naturalis is on my grail list. I love Genta designs. However, their prices are INSANE even though I realize cost is tied to marketing. Patek created a barrier to entry for its customers and it is SUCH a smart strategy!
it was great Federico, right to the point. to put it in brief it is self-respect marketing behind their success. they have that quality to maneuver on it and they do it very deliberately.
Good vid, Sir.
first!!!. love your videos Federico. Keep them comming. greetings from denmark :)

+Ragamuffyn yes. I knew that you could buy the entry level Pateks. But I didn't know you had to fill a application to purchase the high end ones..
can you make a video about the speake marin watch brand?
I sold my two Calatravas years ago . I just didn't wear them enough here in hot ,humid ,wet Florida . Today they're worth triple what I sold them for but I don't miss them . Nice one Fedrico !

Interesting story about Patek. Thank you for the bed time story :D
Another great vid. You manage to balance your knowledge of watches without being too pretentious. I bet you'll have 100k+ subs one day.
Brilliant video my friend! Aesthetically, prestige for me cannot be beaten. Also no doubt they need to be treated with care but on the other hand still a top grade movement. They are so clever with supply and demand no doubt.
Great vid as usual Frederico. Besides all that you said Patek also invented the wristwatch, the perpetual calendar, the anual calendar, the chronograph split seconds, etc. etc. and has developed some of the most iconic time pieces in history in very small quantities as you mentioned. A perfect formula to create a mith
Brilliant demonstration indeed. Patek Philippe make good watches but more than anything else they make fantastic BUSINESS.
Soundtrack name please! And yes, great video as always - thanks Federico
Great vid!
I reckon that you're right about PP and their marketing/supply and demand ethos. I'll never own one, which doesn't concern me one iota. You've a nice, warm and easily understandable way of presenting, BTW. Thanks.
My dad, who worked in sales, always said "second best is best" because the marginal increase in quality, if any, wasn't worth the premium for the bragging rights of owning the "best" especially when something even better is always on the horizon.
Thanks for this video, I feel like I am learning. Fed, I have an idea for a video, is there a way to get an email to you?

What's the name of the patek in the thumbnail? And great video, that ad is pretty cool!
Spot on!
I have several Pateks which I bought new from AD, never had to fill out application for purchasing the pieces so I don't know what Federico is talking about. Patek is the best, that's why they are exclusive. It was started by Polish watchmaker from Warsaw, Poland , Antoni Patek in 1839. My Pateks are by far the best , most accurate timepieces.

Because you never bought one rare or important enough that required an application... Trust me, its common knowledge....
Nicely done! I think everyone perceives the exclusivity effect the brand generates, but you illustrated it and explained it extremely well. With that kind of zealous guardianship of haute horology, it's no wonder they were so upset at Tag for issuing a 15k tourbillon.
i always wonderd what the intro song is
I was told you have to buy 150-200k from 3-4 pieces before you are eligible to even apply for an application watch.

If only I could get my hands on one of those application forms! I would make 1000s of copies of it, and fill it out with crank applications from people like 'Winnifred T Pooh' and other such highly credible parties.
I totally agree on all you just said. Hope I can buy a calatrava one day... btw, Why did you stretch the video over 10 min while the content ends at 8 ?
THINK YOU ARE SPOT ON!
the same could be said of quite a few swiss watchmakers their watches are not that good but their marketing is excellent
Nailed it.
What I like about Patek is that they try to innovate watch making by making incredibly complicated watches. I will never afford anyone of those, but it shows that they care about the art of watchmaking. Any watchmaker can make a watch expensive by making it out of gold and adding diamonds, but not ever watch maker can make watches like the Grandmaster Chime.

Great vid! Love patek, had the chance to own a 5711. This is a great horology company and definitely better then overpriced over glorifed Richard Mille.
Classiest intro :)

No way for me to actually verify this but from everything I've read I'm leaning toward Lange and Grand Seiko as the best of the bunch, not counting small independents like Bovet or others. what do you think?
Could you make a video about the holy trinity?
What is the characteristic that makes a successful application?
Exclusivity is an interesting marketing ploy. It works though. To see "The Last Supper" in Milan you have to buy tickets in advance, when my brother visited it was the only thing he wanted to see because his friends had been turned away in the past.
Good content. I'm a horological noob, so this is all new to me.
GOOD VIDEO, BTW :)

Well, finally a reason why P.P is such an exclusive brand. In a way I find it kinda mysterious and interesting. It's like you want to make part of the club. But what to say about the thousands of Calatravas on sale on Chrono 24 and so....... (I want one). about the marketing statement: you never really own a P.P.......I think it's amazing. but somehow I prefer the one from Blancpain: In Blancpain we never made a quartz watch and we'll never do.... (something like this). Great video full of knowledge. thank you.

lol how long is this outro?
Wise words Frederico. Patek this an amazing market management work, branding, etc. The only mistake they have been doing is to produce too many base piece like Calatravas and annual calendars. This has been already scratiching their image and might produce even more damages moving foward. Now with the current industry retraction they will have a THE opportunity to collect excess of pieces in their boutiques and hold them later. Let's see..
Patek Philippe runs a similar business model like Ferrari or De Beers. The production is actually quite high at 50,00 watches produced a year, but Patek will always sell pieces to various dealers in small quantities. The Nautilus is a prime example of market control. A steel 5711 or 5980 is a very hard piece to locate at most AD's.
Fed what happened to the piece you purchased in hong kong? The one you were waiting for in the mail?

I think it also has to do with their design. If you compare the Calatrava to its competition the Calatrava comes out on top, mostly in the case design

very interesting, just like Ferrari!
Federico, when I started my interest in watches almost 50 years ago, PP was already the brand with most prestige -by far- in the watch world. But there were no applications for anything, no waiting list, nor there was a campaign saying that "you never own a Patek......" So, it cannot be that these factors are the base of PP prestige over the rest of brands. What do you say?
Federico discovered the 10:00 over mark
AD says two year waiting list for a Nautilus ⏯
Patek Philippe is my favorite brand just because I think they're the prettiest.
Basically they manipulate the market?
@dirkirsche4321
7 жыл бұрын
Ariaditya Pramestu , I don't believe they manipulate the market. They only have their own brand, and at best they barely influence the market, since only a handful would contemplate purchasing even an entry level aqua. If I wanted to manipulate the market, I would buy up as many low, mid level, and high end brands, like say, Swatch, and push the market in the direction I want. But Patek? They make penny's on the market share dollar.
Thanks Federico ... nice segment and some really great info on Patek! My reaction is kind of split on the concept of Patek's exclusivity, which btw I've heard Rolex does for certain new pieces as well; e.g. only selling to previous multi-purchase Rolex customers. On the one hand, I like how Patek is interested in protecting the market and reserving their limited stock for customers who genuinely want to wear and keep a Patek, however on the other hand, I wonder if being so exclusive appeals to and perhaps even creates a level of elitism and snobbery. Why advertise and sell to the general public at all then? If it's a private club, let them find you - after all, they basically know how much money, power, and influence you have by doing their own research. And come to think of it, if they're trying to be that exclusive, why even sell to Charlie Sheen whose promiscuity and drug use certainly don't embody their persevering values of steadfastness and family tradition.
A lot of comments about Calatravas. Are they the Patek for those who can't afford one?

Interesting, I call that forbidden fruit marketing. Harley Davidson tried that in the early 2000s, look where that got them. All the customers went to other MC manufacture, better prices and quality
it would be cool if you interviewed a watch maker
What about Richard mille? Arnt they insanely hard to get ahold of, even harder than any of the holy trinity watches?
@FedericoTalksWatches
7 жыл бұрын
Richard Mille is a great example of a watch brand tanking in price... They aren't easy to get a hold of, but it has gotten much easier.
Did you really just hit us with 2 minutes of filler music at the end a la ACIII? Haha
Patek and Daytona are current equality of Hermes Birkin bag for men. New SS Daytona was always hard to get. Even 20 years ago. Can they make enough watches? Ofcourse they can but they wan't. Lets also open de beers vaults and drop value of diamonds to 0. According to some analytics De Beers should have enough stones in vaults to pave a highway from NYC to LA.
How come some brands are not in the holy trinity of some brands are way more expensive does that mean they are above the holy trinity ?
@JerehmiaBoaz
8 жыл бұрын
The holy trinity is a watch collectors thing. Some brands don't target the collectors but the extremely wealthy, in other words they want to sell super expensive status objects to people who don't care about their value in the long run.
