I have used the micro puff hoody extensively for the last 2 years. It works wonderfully over a long sleeve base-layer for aerobic activities like XC skiing and biking in cold weather. Typically my base layer and then the hoody will wet out (from perspiration). The hoody breaths very well and keeps me warm even when it's damp (I never feel soaked). I usually drive 45-60 minutes after my workout and by the time I am home both my base layer and the hoody will be dry. After several cycles of these workouts the hoody will begin to get a little stiff and crinkly (from the dried perspiration). When this happens I throw it in the wash (hang dry) and it comes out as good as new. I've done this wear & launder cycle at least 50 times with good results. There is no way I would "abuse" a down jacket/sweater like I have the micro-puff. This winter I purchased an Outdoor Research SuperStrand LT hoodie. It's very similar to the micro puff hoody (but is less expensive). I would say the fit is a little more generous and it's a little warmer than the micro-puff I have been using the OR in the same way (described above) and it is performing well. For me, both jackets have been game-changers for aerobic workouts in the cold.

The drop pockets being slightly cropped helps things to not bounce around in there, and also makes it so that any damage to the jacket hem will not compromise the pocket's borders

Good call on that! I figured it was just to follow the pattern with the external hand pockets. The original micro puff drop pockets went all the way, and the hand pockets were higher up. Sounds like they improved the setup. Thanks for the insight!

Hello Scott! Thank you for the great note. Really appreciate the support! You are spot on with the shades 😎👌 Costa Diego. Will have the review up early next week. I really like these for wrap sunglasses. I still love the Costa Spearo XL. They are my favorite looking. But I have been going with the Spy Czar the last few months. Same size as Spearo XL but lighter in weight. Hope that helps!

Sean! Outstanding review comparing these 2 (just back from my JMT backpack, catching up). Thanks so much, looking forward to the other reviews I missed. On the JMT backpack I used the 2017 shiny blue Micro Puff, worked great as always, but look forward the new one. Hope all is well (btw, the Micro Puff link only goes to the women's versions). Take care my friend.

Hey Paul! Welcome back from your epic 15 day adventure! So cool how you get out and explore. Glad the OG Micro Puff worked well for you, still. Thanks for heads up on the link. Hey Sean, thanks for the great review. You explain the differences between the two items well, however I'm missing some more specific advice on how to pick one over the other. My assumption is that the Down is warmer but less versatile (down is not great in heavy rain, weighs more and compresses a bit less) whereas the Micro is the most versatile (synth dries quicker when wet, weighs less and packs smaller) but not as warm as the down. Thus I would probably pick the Down for casual winter use, and the micro for hiking. With these caveats: 1) one may really need the extra warmth of the down when camping in super cold conditions 2) with warmer base, mid layers (I'd go for wool) plus a light shell one can probably end up making the micro as warm as the down. Does this make sense?

So for myself I'm planning to replace my underused Nano Air (too warm most of the year, too cold when not active enough) with a Nano Air Light + the Micro Puff in the backpack ready to warm me up (for northwest europe climate, mild winters and mild summers). What do you think?

The design feature of slightly cropped drop pockets serves the purpose of preventing heavy items such as phones or earpods from inadvertently popping out of the jacket due to their weight.

Hello Gez! Good question. I have layered over both the Micro Puff and Down Sweater. Both worked well. The Down Sweater has more loft, for sure. But it works well with layering too. The down can be slightly compressed and still be warm as heck. I was just wearing it today in temps in the 20s F with just a t shirt. It is super warm.

Then torrentshell 3l. If I’m active like hiking I go. Better sweater. Nano puff. Torrentshell 3l. Anyway I could improve anything there?

I run warm. I usually use merino 150 weight and a hardshell. Sometimes a nano air light hybrid too - for temps 5-20f. So just my feedback on how I use things. Hope that is somewhat helpful!
