I had the great pleasure of being coached by Pat Zachary at Mets Dream Week in 2004. He was sincerely one of the nicest, most decent people I've ever met...baseball or not. He was an awesome pitcher when he played, and a great coach when I was there. Generous with his time and talent, funny and incredibly humble. He's had some very difficult challenges since that time and I pray for him and his family and wish him peace, happiness and good health. Thank you for featuring Pat here.

Pat was a very good pitcher on some very bad Mets teams. One thing I always noticed was how hard he played and how badly he wanted to win. He always gave his all. Seeing this interview I see what a great guy he is. Great job!

Mr. Zachary took the time out to speak to a group of us of a youth baseball camp at MCC back in the 90’s. I appreciated his advice to all of us way back then.

Great Interview. It might be late, ( I am 64), but it was great to get to finally Know you Pat. Sorry for never appreciating you when I was a teen boy( Seaver was my boyhood idol). These interviews by Howie are VERY cool and important for fans that were young in those lousy years, to truly understand what was happening. Never remembered Pat pitching in the 1976 WS at Yankee stadium!! Great stuff. TY Howie for bringing back humanity to these players via your interviews.

Pat was one of my favorite player on some really bad mets teams...never forget the game he pitched against a great pirate team summer of ‘80...complete game shutout, 2-0 win...saw that game at Shea w/ my dad...good to see you again Pat...God bless you

I remember that game, too. I remember so many great pitching performances by Zachry. I remember praying to the baseball gods for that no-hitter he missed. Probably no one ever told him this, but he was worthy of replacing Tom Seaver. He wasn’t exactly on the same level, but he was worthy. He just didn’t have the great teams around him that Tom did. He would have thrived on those ‘84 - ‘88 teams had he been healthy and in his prime.

@@jayburdification Had Zachry stayed healthy, that would have been a really good trade. Trading Seaver made sense, as he was getting older, and the Mets needed a total rebuild. Zachry was a really good pitcher...when he was healthy.

Pat was a good pitcher who always got injured at the wrong times. Had he been on the '69 or '73 Mets, he'd have been the 4th or 5th starter, and made well remembered contributions.

What is incredible is that this interviewer (Howie Rose) is only two years younger than Pat Zachry. Zachry who just died was 72 years old at his death and Howie is unbelievably 70 years old. Howie actually called games that Pat pitched. Yet, Howie looks so much younger than Pat. They were actually contemporaries in this interview.

I remember Pat had gotten off to a good start in 1978. I was at the game which Pete Rose had hit his 37th straight game. He was 0-2 and came up in the 7th inning and got the hit and recall the cheers for him (after the boos from the fight with Harrelson in the '73 playoffs). Then Tommy Holmes (whose record Rose tied) was brought out in a brief ceremony. That must have broken Zachary's rhythm as he suddenly struggled, and was taken out shortly and seen him try to kick something and suddenly fell. Sad for him regard in the loss of his wife. He looked well and hope he stays in touch.

Pat must have made some impression on a Met rooking named Mazzilli. Pat was at the plate batting with runners on and Al Hraboski threw at Pat for trying to bunt the runners over. Well after Pat's AB, MAzz hit a home run and upon reaching home he shouted something to Al like, "That's for Pat!" Al lost his mind and tried to get at Mazz. Nothing really came of it though. But Mazz in his own way stood up for Pat.

may he rip. I'd never heard him talk. I have some of his baseball cards and he has a slightly 'hippy dippy' type look, I would have figured he'd sound sort of like Bill Walton, but he sure kept his southern drawl.

Pat misremembers something. Jim Mason did not play for Montreal the following year. He only played for them in 1979 and he never hit a homer as an Expo and that was the only year he played in the NL

My guess is it was in a Spring Training Game, the teams Mason played on in the following years all trained in Florida. Since he said he threw his glove at him, that's more possible in the more relaxed spring training environment.
