We had three bread sows that we think because of a change in the weather in February of 1970 all three went into labor about the Sametime one evening like I said the weather went from mid 50's low 60s temp earlier that day to low 40s upper 30s that evening we ended up by 11 pm 27 live pigs that same night mom brought out her old towels and we had electricity run to the barn as soon as they were born they got rubbed down and placed on a teat under a heat lamp....there in the barn were also actual rough cut 2by 4 pig boards put up to prevent crushing my dad cut the boars at 5 weeks about 7 to 10 days before weaning he always tried to castrate before weaning said it was less stressful on the little fellows rather than right after weaning.....

So funny some of the comments. The birth anything is a wonderful event. I’m drawn to it for any hope of joy. My heart just tears out for you all when things go badly. But there is no perfect birthing solution? Open field vs hutch. Helping vs not helping. Some pigs are anxious and get up and down all the time, sometimes in such a trance the only thing that will save the pigs from getting stepped in or laid in is is removing them. Some pigs need help and a small hutch is difficult to help in. Some times even days later mother are still weak, they can’t really control how they lay down they lay on some. The only thing a owner can do is judge each event on its own. Dig in for the ride to preserve life. Love these animals until the day they get slaughtered for some Bacon! I love your approach and have seen the pain and anger in your eyes of your failures. I saw exactly why you chose to free farrow this time. We live and learn from horrible events if we are paying attention. I look so forward to watching your channel it’s the first thing I look for at 4 am in CA. I watch and drink my coffee living vicariously though your farm! Thanks for the ride

Thanks Rick. I really appreciate the kind words. You are correct, all we can do is learn from past experience, work to do better and still pray that things work out. Farming is the most perfect imperfect profession there could be. Luck, faith, hope and hard work stirred up together for something that is tangible and real. Thank you for watching.

Those gilts need too go through at least 2 heat cycles before you breed them probably at eight months and breed them when you want the schedule to be for your convenience...similar to cattle either fall seasonal or spring seasonal calving

Thanks for the guess. We've not moved as much as we normally would due to the amount of rain we have had. Determined the best management would be to leave them in place and not destroy more pasture than we had to.

Its good you check her at night, because, yes, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and 3 in the morning. # of piglets? I am guessing that you didn't breed on her first heat cycle, so I will go with 9 live piglets.

I think jack is the better looking boar. I prefer a bigger pig. I don't care for the show type pig. In my opinion they don't look right, and move to stiff. Hamlet makes me think of that type pig. Just my opinion. They all look healthy, that is the most important thing. Great video. Have you had pig jump your fence? I have a barrow that started jumping the fence. Added another strand of wire, seems to have stopped him. I think your gilt will have 12.

Boars will be put to work at about 7 months old. We look for body size, speed of growth, teat count and shape of the pig. Numbers are based on need.

First time birth, I'm gonna say 6.

That's a great question. Since we only have the two sows, we don't have a lot of choice. We are going to keep the ones we think are best and see what happens. Hoping for the best.

She will have 11 piglets. How soon after they farrow, will you re-breed the sows? Do you try and have each one farrow 3 times in 2 years?

After they wean the piglets (about 6-8 weeks) we'll let them cycle 1 time and then put the boars in with them. We can typically farrow 2 times per year.

Your hogs are grown up pretty fast Hellen was a beautiful hog she just had a tragic farrowing . It sad to see Hellen leave the farm but know that u couldn't take a chanced having problems again expensive..

@@SheratonParkFarms yes i do, weaning 202 litters i was averaging 2600-2700 pigs weaned per month at 15lbs average weight, last few months i have only been weaning 2400-2500 our herd seemed to have gotten older in these groups normally i have around 70 gilts and most of them wean 16 pigs. I really push the gilts to get full potential out of them. I had one wean 18 last month, but i was off for a real bad allergic reaction and the guy doing farrowing skipped her while sorting, i would never leave more than 16 on a sow unless i know i will be able to get what we call nurse sows within 2 days. I only wean so many because i can successfully wean pigs at 8 days old to use the sow for starve out pigs. Only thing is the feed the owner has to get for them is 1.00 per lb. And we go through 25 bags a month. Me and my wife are planning on moving to southern va in the next year or two i wanna buy some land and do my own thing with farming and raising pigs on pasture, i love working with pigs but i hate being confined inside all day. Going to be one hell of a learning curve if i would do that, because climate controlled buildings is easy because pigs don't have to deal with weather changes.
