Pastel Pencil Study... Do's and Don'ts of My Skin Tone Technique. Narrated Tutorial.

In this narrated Pastel Pencil Study, I discuss the do's and don'ts of how I create skin tones on a baby's face ... This was created especially for a request from one of my Patrons on Patreon. This is just a visual aid to help you see what happens when too much white pigment is added under the colour glazes and other considerations such as values and edges. I love to share my techniques and tips for pastel Portraits. This video footage has been slowed down to Real time speed in places so you can take a closer look.
My passion is to help you to create realistic and soulful artwork. If you found this video useful, please give it a like. Be sure to comment and say hello and let me know what kind of videos you'd like to see

Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so, I use Conti a Paris ones for them, ... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also, the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it, I would recommend buying the all the brands I use as sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

That’s super helpful Dave thank you, I’m just starting out with pastels 🥴. You’ve produced a photo realism style on the right but the one on the left still has its merits of being a nice impressionist style I’d say☺️

One of the few tutorials I see use Caran D'ache pencils. I have the Faber Castell pastel pencils and have avoided the Caran D'ache because they don't seem to be as popular or have as good of reviews. But watching you here I can see how they have real value in skin tone. I am not surprised, my Caran D'ache Luminance are my favorite skin tone colored pencils.

Hi KR... thanks for the message. My next KZread video will be 3 brands 3 reviews on how they are used for skin tone. I am reviewing three different studies of the same image... CarbOthello v Pit Pencils v Caran d'Ache... it is my same technique... I explain the change of application for each brand... so be sure to keep an eye out for it... hopefully will be on end of this week. 💕🙏

@@DavePortersArt I will definitely be looking for it, I have CarbOthello and the Pitt Pencils and many pan pastels (about 40 in all with all the basics). I am moving into more fur and skin tone portrait projects so I can not wait to see this ;)

Learning so much from you Dave. Do you know if there is a cheaper equivalent to the Clairefontaine Pastelmat? Just getting to grips with colour and would feel a little pressured using such expensive paper.
