    oPeRa1923 And listening to her speak as she explains things, apart from the fact that she was a school teacher, it seems as if she was half the years old (and still writes poetry !). And she also speaks a nice standard Italian and not like many grandmothers at her age who speak more dialect than standard Italian.

    It is odd to think she was born in 1919 and her own grandmother would be born around 1860 I would imagine, that just seems almost unbelievable to think of the human links we have to people born over 170 years ago, my own Grandad passed recently he was 95 and his own grandmother was born in 1862 I believe and he made that era seem real to me he often spoke of her and how life was back then I think it so important to make these sort of programs and have them there for people in years to come to look back on and feel a link to the past with a human touch.

    Same. My great grandmother spoke often of her childhood and her siblings, some of whom were born in the late 1800s. While the dates can seem wonky, marrying younger women wasn’t uncommon, and her father married 3 times (the previous two wives died). I wrote down as many of her stories as possible because they were so interesting and made history seem to come alive.

    @sisuphos in general they’re quite different both in vocabulary and grammatical structure. You may be able to understand people in a couple hour radius but outside of that it’s quite challenging. In some of the videos on this channel the elderly people will be speaking their dialects and you can tell it’s an Italian language but there’s a lot one wouldn’t understand if they weren’t from the area.

  • @marcowen1506

    @marcowen1506

    3 жыл бұрын

    @sisuphos Some of the dialects vary from standard Italian only in the choice of words (like American and British English). The Sicilian "dialect" is essentially its own language, as are the "dialects" of Alto Adige (Sudtyroler...) and Piemonte. A Sicilian speaker and a hill farmer from the Alps would have a very tough time understanding each other. The gap is, I'm told, very nearly the gap between Spanish and Italian: different grammar, different words, faux amis etc. Sadly most of these dialects are dying out. the young are not interested in them and watch Italian and American shows so get no exposure. Don't you have dialects where you are from?

  • @Hastdupech8509

    @Hastdupech8509

    3 жыл бұрын

    @sisuphos In Italy we have Standard Italian, which derives from Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio's Florentine (so, spoken around 1300), and has always been used as a lingua franca all over the peninsula, by many intellectuals but also by other categories that travelled a lot. Thriughout all this time, though, the Romance languages brothers of Florentine stemming from Latin evolved and were widely spoken among the population. The Italian unification posed to problem to give Italians their national language, so basically making Italian widely spoken outside of the cultural elite. All of this means that they've been called dialects all these years to bring them down and raise Italian's status, but actually they are independent languages, like Spanish and Catalan and Galician, for example. So, if we spoke only our regional language, we'd have a hard time understanding each other since they're not dialects as Anglophones mean it (I'm thinking at Br vs Am English). About border areas, the situation is complicated because not only does the Italian population have its own regional language (Venetian, Friulian, Piedmontese, Lombard, Ligurian, Ladin), but also foreign languages (French, German, Slovenian) and some of their dialects (in Südtirol they speak a very different variant of German, same in Switzerland-bordering areas including Valle d'Aosta, and speaking of this and of the French border, in Italy there are remnants of Provençal and Occitan). We understand each other thanks to Italian, which is not learned as a foreugn language, but since birth. More or less all of the Italians are able to express themselves in Italian, obviously with some grammar variations (subjunctive, reflexive pronouns, transitivization of intransitive verbs...) or pronunciation adjustments depending on which regional language is spoken in their native area. But it's much less chaotic than one might think

    Vicky, what a great recipe video and lovely lady. I am 56 and i love these folks from the greatest generation ever as we call them in the u.s., i like to read a lot about history and i enjoy sitting down and listening to stories from folks like this lady who lived through it, over a pot or two of coffee. I love it, you learn so much. I had uncles who served in WWII, they were blessed to make it home, and i'm so glad that we went to europe to fight for folks just like this lovely lady. The younger generations don't seem to understand we could have lost many cultures. God bless you all, looking forward to next friday.

    @@pastagrannies Vicky, question for you or the pastagrannies, sometimes i get pop-ins from relatives and i do not have time to make fresh pasta. One of my favorites is pappardelle which i use for a slightly creamy chix mushroom sauce, porcinis, baby bellas (or portabellas) and button moshrooms. Barilla is the most popular brand here but most stores do not stock pappardelle. Anyway, would it work if i cooked lasagna sheet pasta and cut them in appx. 3/4 inch wide ribbons ?, the pop-in relatives can be as staunch as the pastagrannies when it comes to what type/shape pasta goes with a particular sauce, ty for any info, God bless
