Okay, I just bought that pastfx chorus ensemble, plugged it into my JCM2000 DSL100, and that’s exactly it. That CE1 preamp driving the tube preamp of the marshall. This is the Frusciante sound. His clean / warm / crunchy sound, and which colours and limit all the pedals he puts in front of it. It makes perfect sense why he puts it last in his chain, why he always has it (even last year just for playing like 2 songs in a garden, he brought just a few random pedals but the one he was obligated to bring; his CE1 and his jubilee head + strat). It is more about the preamp than the chorus. Its the base of his sound, the secret sauce. Obviously there are other preamp/boost pedals to use as always-on to drive a tube amp. For example, with the RHCP Josh Klinghoffer prefered using the Xotic EP Booster (and CE2s for choruses). PS: the low mode does a treble roll-off, so if you want that signature sparkly clean sound, you will need to put a buffer in front of it to add trebles (no problem in high mode which brings up highs and lows). So if you want to use it in low mode / clean tones, you’ll have to put it in buffer mode, or put buffered pedals in front of it (like any boss pedals, or mxr micro amp for example). Otherwise your clean will sound too dark, not sparkly like you expect

Okay, you seem to know your stuff, I have a grobert the one preamp pedal, when I engage it, it essentially boosts my amps volume making it hard to get unity gain because he’s volume on 6 with the grobert turned on boosts it up to 10. Is it Better to have the pedal last in my chain on break up volume then turn my head down. Or run it first to break up into the compression pedal to tame the volume jump?

The pre-amp crunch is what I was missing from my Boss CE-2W. As wonderful as that pedal is, this is totally next level. Also, I can’t hear much or any difference between the deluxe and the MN3007 chip version. Checked their spec sheet; features are the same. I’m getting the cheaper one. Thanks Dave once again for helping me spend money on a hobby I’ll never master as well as your good self 😂

@@thedavesimpson heya Dave! This might get buried in the fray of comments but! I just wanted to say that I love the Past FX pedal, though I also tried out a nifty trick through my AC15. Since it has two simultaneous input channels, and a chorus is just a vibrato channel mixed with the clean signal: I re-wired my pedalboard where two signal paths diverged just before the vibrato pedal (the behringer clone of the vb-2) and had them both (a vibrato signal and a clean signal) rub up against each other in the amp circuitry. It was amazing! A very lush and “real” chorus sound with no chorus pedal. Dunno if you’ve ever tried that but I’d recommend giving it a go just for fun. Anyway, thanks a million dude, I love your playing, heart, and of course, channel.

10:42 I do agree that the CE-1 preamp won't work for John's tone ALONE due to the need of a Marshall amp or Marshall-style overdrive pedal to aid the control (i.e. compression) of the DS-2 and WH10's volume jumps. Please note though that the Marshall-style overdrive pedal should only be used with the CE-1 preamp, deemed by John's former tech Dave Lee as integral to his tone (unmodified), if the amp isn't a Marshall-style one because otherwise, both a Marshall amp and Marshall-style pedal will result in a dirtier tone. However, you missed 1 more reason why the CE-1 preamp won't work alone. That is, in a John-style pedalboard, there must be a pedal in front of the CE-1 that has a buffer. What John's pedals are like this? The DS-2 and WH10, which you obviously also have! This is probably why PastFX included an internal buffer in their clones, so that if such front-placed buffer-bypass pedals are absent, you can turn the internal buffer on. Perhaps you missed that point because you said in 13:54 that you dislike buffers, but for John's tone, a buffer is helpful in a John-style pedalboard if a CE-1 (standard or preamp-only) will be used. This importance was noted by Jordan Fresque Effects, Will Galluccio, Kentaro Kiuchi, etc.

Bought one of these in the mini version 2/3 years ago as one of a few one-off prototypes on reverb.. these things are where its at for CE-1 clones. The crunch is very unique and warm, really not just a clean boost for your amp. At its extreme it will turn into a warm fuzz. What I have found is that for a mini-silver jubilee on the clean channel: the kind of push these pedals provide does make the amp break up quite a bit with the input gain at 8. For me this leads into frusciante-esque territory, even without any dirty pedal in front or broken up amp in itself. I do not experience any hard or harsh volume jumps of the DS-2 if the eq is at [bass 9, mid 7, treble 1.5, presence 4].

Why does the preamp crunch pedal in the low Impedance mode have no crunch but the chorus Ensemble does if you watch olly vert demoing wills chorus Ensemble pedal maybe because he uses the silver jubilee

Wait so the chorus units do bypass crunch the signal with the buffer only or unbuffered as well just to a different extent?

Hey Dave! Great stuff! Where would you place this on your pedalboard with the jackhammer, Ds2 and wh10?

I'd guess he'd go guitar -> ds2 -> wh10 -> ce1 -> jackhammer... Wondering the same thing. I think the jackhammer would be at the end to do the pushed dirty amp thing. Personally, I liked the tone well enough on mine to go without the jackhammer and use it on high mode to give the extra compression/dirtiness.

I'd have it either as the first pedal the amp see's or after the jackhammer.

Hi, Dave! Have you considered using the PastFX pre-amp instead of the Marshall Jackhammer to get the clean-ish tone?

It adds crunch in the low mode if it's a valve amp

Hi! Great video! I have seen a lot of your videos. They are all amazing Little question, in your opinion the preamp crunch is enough if i add another chorus after in the chain? Something like: Guitar--> Boss Ds2--> Fuzz--> IbanezWH10--> Preamp crunch ---> chorus ---->Amp. Obviously to get the Frusciante tone. Thanks!

The preamp crunch is only a little bit of getting johns tone. You need your amp to be on the edge of breakup still.

@@thedavesimpson So... are you saying, looking your pedal chain, still you need something like the jackhammer? (sorry for my bad english)

Yes, Sebastian, you’d need something like the Jackhammer for some gain to get closer to John’s tone

Does the pre amp pedal boost volume or just add gain? I have a grobert the one pre amp pedal and when engaged to get colour it boosts the amp volume so much, it’s very hard to get unity gain on my board since the pre amp pedal boosts volume so much.

  • @Harrisabd

Also, I run the pedal first in my chain so the compressor tames the volume, but there’s so much hiss and hum because the pre amp is boosting volume but compressor is taming the output.

Hello Dave! I bought a BOSS Katana MKII 50w and a CE1 Preamp, but I can't seem to sound like John. The CE1 Crunch feels very "Bass". Can you help me? Thank you so much for everything!

I would prefer using it through clean because it doesn't get filtered by the Distortion channel using a distortion channel will filter your ds2 and other pedals and it doesn't sound really nice
