Carol Lynley, RIP. Lovely presence.
Wonderfull man!!! Jack Jones ! The most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Delicious man! Greetings from Brazil
Were they told to NOT shake hands when meeting or wishing them well when they had to leave.....for Allen Ludden(Mr. Manners) to put up with that, it's mind boggling!

i noticed that with the first group. out of the 8 possible handshakes, i saw 3. and they were more on the cordial side. the only reason i noticed it, is because they always shake hands. but i am pretty sure that this came from the mgmt, not the celebrities or the contestants. usually there is quite a lot of interaction, while they are playing. not on this episode. i cant recall one partner touch from any of the players.
Jack is adorable

His record of Wives and Lovers is one of my favorite all time recordings.
Astounding that it took six clues for one of them, finally, to say 'liberty' as a clue for 'freedom'. Jack's clues were particularly obscure. I realise they all referred to events that were in the news at the time, but he was certainly doing it the hard way.

I concur. Lousy clues from Song-guy. The male contestant was an attorney and should have gotten it sooner. Apparently J.J. and others have not been out of the U.S.A..

I thought the same thing, but it must be borne in mind that contestants on gameshows are usually people unused to bright lights and cameras -- thus, I try to be charitable.

Is It fair to say that Jack Jones has been an underrated singer. I have been a fan of his since I first listened to his music for the first time back in the early 70's. I have his 2- Record Set 'The Best of Jack Jones'. Some many beautiful songs well interpreted by Mr. Jones. Two of my favorites are are: A Day In The Life Of A Fool and The Impossible Dream.
Love Jack!! What can you say? He sings wonderfully and so handsome!! He is so intelligent and yet so humorous at times!! 🎶🎼🎵💋❤
So glad that as of January 2018, these two celebrities, Carol Lynley and Jack Jones, are still with us (living).

R I.P. Carol
That Carol Lynley - what a doll! Anyone who sees her, gets weak in the knees. Always a pleasure to see her in whatever the show may be. A great, versatile actress she was. That Jack Jones too was a very handsome man. He was a very good singer, who was once married to actress Jill St. John.
Mary looked fabulous.
Carol Lynley. Be still my beating heart!♥️♥️♥️
Carol was so much more playful in life than her roles would indicate. I miss her!
In the word "Bush" Jack Jones said the word "Mae" He was referring the the"Ever popular Mae Busch (1894-1946). Started in Silent Pictures then switched to talkie. Most famous for playing Oliver Hardy wife in a number of Laurel & Hardy's films Unaccustomed as we are 1st sound talkie of Laurel & Hardy; but most famous was Sons of the desert (1934) with Dorothy Christy playing Stan Laurel wife.

Wonder what ever became of Mary Marx?
CAROL LYNLEY's style as an actress was schizophrenic to say the least. She could be superb as in "Bunny Lake Is Missing" (1965). Then near catatonic in the next one. Bright and sparkling in "Under the Yum Yum Tree" (1963). But sour and unpleasant in so many others. I never understood why she was considered so A-List and often chosen before YVETTE MIMIEUX, TUESDAY WELD and SUE LYON.

She was certainly "easy-on-the eyes" looks wise, but I've read / heard that her personal life was not good. Some problems as mentioned in the book titled: "Valley of the Dolls". I think ( guesswork on my part I admit from things written on Webpages ) that Directors / Producers and crew and cast got tired of waiting for her to "even" or "level" or "steady".

"Poseiden Adventure" would be 2 words so that wouldn't be allowed.
16:42 For the word "Bush" Jack Jones give the clue, "Mae_____" hoping to elicit the similarly phonetically sounding name Mae "Busch" from a 16 year old contestant. Busch was a mostly silent film star of the 1920's and early 1930's who died in 1946, a few years before the fledgling 16 yr old high school contestant was even born - so there was a 99.99% likelihood that the contestant would have no clue what he meant by "Mae____" and certainly had to think he meant "May." lol. Geez, what a useless and idiotic effort from Jones. Miraculously, at the end of the round when Ludden explained the clue, the kid actually seems to indicate that she indeed was familiar with the actress Mae Busch - certainly a possibility, but more a reaction that seems born out of agreeable courtesy than accuracy.
@gordonblackett8329

I agree... I would have been 7 years old when this was recorded and wouldn't have known Mae Busch at the time but being a big fan of Laurel & Hardy I understood the clue straight away. 🤩
@waldolydecker8118
2 жыл бұрын
@@gordonblackett8329 - you only understood the clue because you were able to see the word on the screen. If you were like the contestant and didn't know what the word was, when Jack Jones said "Mae" you would have phonetically heard it as "may" just like the contestant did. It was an idiotic choice by Jones, and disrespectful of the contestant's potential one and only chance to win
@gusloader123
2 жыл бұрын
I have the sound on, but I also use the "CC" tab. My hearing has gotten worse, but part of the problem is that people slur or mumble their words, and do not speak into the microphone. On the "CC" device the word it printed was "may". I thought maybe it was an obscure shrub or plant grown in various regions of the nation, such as a holly bush. Carol L. and J.J. should have just kept saying "Rose" and "Thorns". How does someone living in the States (or Britain) not know what a "Rose Bush" is?!?
Who is Mary Marks?
I actually felt so bad for the second contestant for getting shutout, that i looked up how far she had to drive just to appear on t.v. for like 2minutes. Luckily for her, Altadena is close to Hollywood so it was just a short drive. Imagine if it was one of the guests they flew in from the mid-west! Drive to airport, board a flight, get a connection to L.A., lay around a studio lot for hours not even sure you'll film that day, get shut out in 3 rounds, then have to fly back all that way for $50 (around $430~ today). Guess it'd be a good daycation?
@gusloader123
2 жыл бұрын
I think that is big reason why most of the contestants at the Hollywood/L.A. studio are from California and most of the contestants on the N.Y.C. version were from around the N.Y., N.J., Conn., Penn. area. Easy train or bus ride. Once in a great while a southerner or for example an English teacher from Wisconsin was on the program, but they were usually taking a vacation to N.Y.C.. {A Place which I would NEVER vacation at/in. argh! Maybe Upstate or around the Finger Lakes, but not in the armpit.}

@@kayhansel6443 - $50.00 dollars in 1964 was a good amount for losing the game. Later on, PW gave a "Parting Gift" instead of cash. In 1964, a gallon of gasoline cost 0.93 cents. A gallon of milk cost about 0.30 cents, and a loaf of bread cost about 0.21 cents. A double deck hamburger with fries and a salad was about a dollar.

Yet, he would insult contestants frequently for using words which A.L. did not like or understand. I have to wonder who wrote A.L.'s term papers and who took his college exams for him? For the PW "Idol", He insulted the contestant who gave a good clue word: "Iconoclast" = meaning: Early Christians who were against the Idols and statues and Images in Eastern Orthodox churches. A.L. did NOT know what the word "Iconoclast" meant, yet he thought it was bad clue. What a pompous dunderhead. (Nor did pretty boy J.J. know the word.) Jack wasn't using South as a synonym to elicit the answer freedom, he was using it as another word associated with the Civil Rights movement, i.e., the Freedom Riders who went South to support the movement. Sadly Mary, Jack's partner, wasn't the brightest spark in the box, but I don't want to come down especially hard on her, because a lot of the contestants on that episode were verging on the brain dead, with a special award going to the second to the last male contestant Stanley Garrett or Harris, or whatever who had so many obvious words sail right over his poor empty little head, like shaking his noggin over Carol's obvious clues of sound and croak for the sound a toad makes, but by that time it was already obvious he had no business being on any game involving words. The last guy, Jay, didn't come out particularly well either. Poor Carol she was a little bit hit and miss on this episode, but she certainly wasn't helped by the contestants she was given to work with.
