I have thermal break and insulation going in under my 4 inches of masonry floor because cold 48*F ground temp. And 6 foot frost depths and piers to steal my heat. They will have thermal breaks 4 sides. 24x24 but almost 500 sq ft floor space. doing 3 vertical 16 foot columns of 4x7 windows per 24x24 section. And aligned to solar south for winter gain with 6/12 pitched skillion roof. So 336 sq ft windows per 576 floor sq ft. North wall is 8" cmu block vermiculite cored, low perm barrier, mineral wool 4 inches, another wrap and air gap 2" and masonry veneer 12" to 8" batter. Doing masonry stove, heater, and white oven on north wall. I have to have pipe to air in floor. Left 4 feet above south windows for ventilation. Great video.

That’s some great info, I like the formulas, cheers🎉. Everyone who can should be using passive solar, relatively easy and free heat😊

It is all good. But the thing is, I have only 4 to 6 sunny days in the winter months. The rest are gray with lead-like clouds all over the sky. But to say even more - at the moment I cannot remember if I saw the sun after September at all.😂

Dear Andrii, you Can have passive solar in places you wouldn’t expect it to work. Check out James Kachedorian’s passive solar book. He developed a plan that worked very well in Massachusetts, not exactly a solar Mecca.

@Kurt M. Move where? 🤔 Borders are closed for male. And there is a war raging in the sunnier part of my country, where I used to live before.

A elegantly simple system but I have one question: What about the choice of glass used in this system? Do you use newer glass with reflective properties or a more clear glass for better solar absorption? Obviously, both would save energy at different times of the year.

Because we use lots of recycled materials, we tend to use what is available with little regard for special treated glass. We’ve never had any problems.

Hi Jack, I love the info in your video. Do you provide consulting services if I'd like to build my own passive solar home? Thanks.

I live in Pittsburgh, Pa and would love to build a passive solar home near here, but I'm not sure about it with the number of sunny days we get. On average, there are 160 sunny days per year in Pittsburgh. On the positive side, we get plenty of rain, so water collection wouldn't be a problem.

Dear Todd, May I suggest that you get a book called The Passive Solar home by James Kachedorian. He built several very effective homes in New England, a place with less sun than you have in PA. If you also want to go with solar electric, it is possible, but your system must be larger than it would be in a more sunny place.

Just a tip, people that are watching this to learn about passive solar might not know what thermal mass means.
