I like to call it recession indie. Our economy collapsed, and we had bands singing really melancholy lyrics in a more upbeat manner. I think it spoke volumes about how most people felt at the time, holding on to a shred of hope.

It's the setup of "we'll rip apart those socialists and all their damn taxes" that really makes it hit. He goes from arrogantly taking out his anger on people who are trying to help him straight to self-reflection and humility.

@@GreyscaleGod Both good lines but the first had no bearing on how I took that one. The line by itself is just too relatable and forces me to be introspective. I came off of that generation of men who quietly suffered till death. Being the transitional generation from that is a hard to describe feeling of isolation, listlessness, and ineptitude.

@@nisahaliyar2675 Ok job (pays enough for basic living but a bit dead end), direct family has always been good aside from a childish father. Father died after extensive and expensive battle with MS. I help my mother, who suffered greatly financially. I think I've travelled farther than an hour from home only 2 or 3 times in the past 5 years. Both times I can think of being weddings for friends. Mostly just spend free time playing video games. I lack any real ambition to make pushes.

@Judg3m3nt bro are you me? Even down to the childish father. My dad tried to raise me to be a slave to all employers and sacrifice my health and comfort for money. Through him I saw how I dont want to live the male life he did, I rebel against the gender norms for men to make money at all costs to provide. There are costs I dont want to pay, and this song reminds me why I dont want to pay them. I've already suffered, got tinnitus from a factory, I cant let my health go for another dollar just because I'm a man and "thats my only value".

i can strongly relate, i would always have the tune stuck in my head but the song name was always blank

I was in prison when this song came out. I was in a concrete box in the actual middle of no where. My shitty radio would only receive one station, but thank God it was a cool indie rock station. I was introduced to so many cool indie bands that year. Stuff I may never have heard otherwise. I'd sit close to my window with my headphones in listening to 96.1 drawing, and just trying to escape mentally. I made a two page list of all the good music I heard so I could find it all when I got out. It's a time I don't miss or want to go back to. Yet this music somehow.still makes me feel nostalgia toward it.

Best song ever from Horizon! I downloaded this track to my iPod and used to listen while walking to school. Then, after school, I'd come home, fire up my Xbox, play Forza Horizon, and listen to the same song again... Times were so much simpler back then. This song!!!! did anyone else listen to the lyrics? it actually tells a really touching story about some guy who wants live happily with his family but he starts taking loans to live happily and he wants to live with his family. His pension runs out and he is in debt so he goes and asks for forgivness from his parents saying that he will come home and that he's not a criminal. " I'm just too much a coward to admit when i'm in need". What an amazing song.

But it's not really up for debate seeing as someone else views a meaning of a song in a different way and that's the way it's supposed to be.(Also if anyone thinks socialism works please take the time to talk to someone whose struggled with it while living in a country that embraces it. I kinda feel like that may be the point. The entire song is about how keeping up the facade can completely ruin you, and the song itself is keeping up a facade too, because the "singer" doesn't want to admit that he can't keep up the lifestyle anymore.

The lyrical beauty of this song is so underrated. The story of a european immigrant bringing his family to America for a better life and fighting through adversity. And the line "we can rip apart those socialists and all their damn taxes," goes hard af.

Life was so much simpler when this song came out
