Passersby Rescue Two Drowning Girls from Lake in east China City

Two young children were saved by two passersby after accidentally falling into a lake at a University campus in Jinan, the capital of east China's Shandong province on May 13.
Surveillance footage showed the two sisters, who are six-year-old and eight-year-old respectively, were playing unsupervised near the lake at around 19:00. After several minutes, the younger girl fell over the edge and slipped down into the water.
The older girl ran to try and help her, but also fell into the lake.
Chen Hongyan, the CCTV monitoring clerk on duty, noticed the shocking scene on his screen in the control room.
He immediately ran to the site to help save the children. Although Chen is unable to swim, he jumped into the water without hesitation and tried to reach the children, who were struggling to stay above the water surface.
Luckily, the water was not very deep near the lake's bank and Chen was able to drag the older girl and return her to the lake edge.
While shouting for help, Chen returned to the water and tried to reach the younger girl who had drifted further toward the center of the lake.
Chen's cries attracted the attention of Guo Chengran, a local procuratorate staff member who was taking a walk nearby. Guo rushed to the scene and immediately saw the danger.
"I saw Chen was doggy paddling in the water. I could see that he didn't know how to swim. Because there was a pretty long distance between him and the little girl, he seemed to run out of strength when he finally reached her and couldn't come back. So I took off my clothes and jumped in to help them," said Guo.
Finally, the two men worked together to reach the drowning girl and swam back toward the lake bank.
The two children were sent to hospital immediately after and were later released unharmed from their experience.
The girls' mother later visited Chen with the two children involved to express her appreciation for his lifesaving actions.
"If it was not for you finding the girls in time, they would have been dead by now. So I brought the two children (here) to express our gratitude to you. The consequences would be unimaginable without your help," the mother said to Chen.
