Seems like the manufacturers of the laptop could create a sealable fire suppressing envelope that owners can travel with. Afterall they know lithium batteries do explode.

Or they could make laptops with batteries that don't spontaneously combust.

Backpack emitting smoke in the rear of the cabin: 1) Stop the plane, shut down the engines. 2) Open one of the rear doors. 3) Throw the smoldering backpack out onto the tarmac where it can burn without causing any fire or injuries on the plane. 4) Have everyone stay seated until emergency crews are on scene. 5) Conduct a normal deboarding of the aircraft using stairs.

The crew did not remove the laptop. Passengers opened the door and threw the laptop out.

Laptop should be shut off before boarding! Isn’t that obvious or is it pure ignorance??

I'd like to know if planes are actually understaffed at take off and landing and can no longer effectuate a successful emergency evacuation. This is an example also of how cramming too many people in the plane increases the risk of actual harm or worse, death. Even if by smoke inhalation. An opportunity to yet again take account of best practices.

The passengers weren’t listening to evacuation procedure and were trying to grab their bags.

Seems lithium batteries, knowing the potential dangers of fire, should have a heat/fire resistant case. So what if it cost too much to make. Sell it at a low price and alot more customers will be gained. Especially for electric cars. Manufacturers should care about the safety of their customers. Companies that have a really good reputation (truly) that care about the quality and safety and happy customers is the best marketing any company would love. Oh, back to reality. Are their fire proof cases for computers?

I sense you are joking here, but in case anyone takes it literally, manufactures obviously need to make a profit, or they will cease to exist and soon have zero employees, zero products to offer and zero customers. My understanding is the cabin crew has access to fireproof bags that smoldering electronics, including laptops and large tablets, can be placed inside in order to contain any fire. I do not know difficult it would be to handle such a situation in the air though (or even on the ground) since grabbing a smoldering, melting or flaming laptop seems like it could be a little challenging. Thankfully, this incident happened on the ground, right at the gate, and not in the air.

A fire proof bag is very expensive, more than the cost of many laptops.

This looks like a case of an "un-commanded evacuation." Being as they were still at the gate, I doubt the flight crew or cabin crew would have ordered an emergency evacuation using the slides when it happened, and the injuries that occurred were most likely due to passengers deciding on their own to evacuate rather than listening to instructions from the cabin crew.

I was on the flight with my fiancé. The flight attendants did NOT react and open the emergency exits. There was a fire and dangerous smoke filling the plane. Hundreds of panicked passengers were all attempting to exit through the front. It was a CRUCIAL moment for the emergency exits to be utilized. I was being shoved by passengers from behind as smoke was filing the cabin. The passengers initiated the use of the energy exits. Minor injuries due to evacuation is far more less severe than folks needing to exit the plane during a fire. THREE out of EIGHT emergency exits were used to evacuate the entire plane. The flight attendant in the middle of the plane thanked the passenger who initiated the emergency exit. This situation called for the use of ALL emergency exits.
