Passenger's 1st flight - and it's a big one

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ben had been asking for a flight in the gyro. Not one to do things by halves, he chose Snowdon. On a perfect day, we set off from Sleap heading west. Question is - would he enjoy dangling 4,000 feet in the air as we flew into the bowl of the highest mountain in Wales?
Shot in 4k using the new Insta 360 x4, GoPro Max and Hero 11.
Includes commentary and ATC.
Low flight over water is not as safe as sitting in an armchair sipping hot chocolate. But it wasn't quite as low as the wide angle cameras make it appear, and my passenger is something of a thrill seeker.
Bonus points for anyone spotting my incorrect pressure setting on landing. I'm so used to dialling off 10 hPa from QNH for circuit arrival that I did the same when they gave me QFE. Not clever, but had the effect of elevating me from the gyro circuit height into the same vertical profile as the fixed wings, so no harm done, lesson learned, and I'll double check next time...

Hi Stu, good to see you back in the gyro, since I last commented, I've completed 2 solo flights,(my initial 3 circuits, and a consolidation flight over the Black Isle), yesterday, I flew from Inverness to Dornoch,(under supervision),it was my second time landing on a grass runway, my recent flights have been in a Cavalon(GCKVZ), the weather was glorious for yesterday's flight, it's a joy to fly in weather like that, thanks for sharing, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

Good spot by your passenger. I always brief my passengers to look out for aircraft, too. I tell them that if I spot something, I will call it out so they know that they don't have to but they sometimes do spot something before I do. I also like to play "spot the airfield" with my passengers. It's interesting how spotting airfields appears to be a learned skill. I found it hard early on in my training and passengers sometimes cannot spot the most obvious ones until we are almost right on top of them.

Awesome, as every of your videos! What a landscape in Snowdonia! Unfortunately, my charter gyro was grounded for nearly 2 months due to delayed spare part delivery and when it was back to duty, weather starts unpredictable. So, like in winter, I enjoy your vids. 😃

The British pasture structure is very pretty, and the Welsh countryside throwing in some mountain ranges looks amazing. The meandering river is also absolutely stunning. I'm personally not a fan of low level flights as it aligns too many risk factors. Obviously the probability is low, but should the engine quit, there's just no margin left for getting your machine out of it in one piece and I imagine the passengers would be at least quite a bit inconvenienced as well. For me, the trade off is not worth it, but I understand and respect that it's a up to each pilot to to make their own considerations. Lovely video, thanks for sharing 👍

Thanks for your comment. I too respect your view on low level flying. I wouldn’t do it with every passenger or over every lake; but in these circumstances with this passenger it made for a very memorable flight.
