Come for the Fender ads, stay for the engaging conversation.
Tegan is just relentlessly cool
Sainthood is such an interesting and quirky album, it's my personal favorite of their catalog.
What a gift, y'all. As a huge longtime fan of T+S, this was incredibly cathartic as a reminder of the humanity of musicians and their individual paths. Keeps me humble and grateful. Love you Tegan, I can't wait to hear your next pivot!

I want to thank you for this chat, not only because Tegan is my personal hero, but because it was really inspiring. I developed tinnitus a year ago, just when I was considering joining a band as a bass player, but because I didn’t have any information about it, since it’s not talked about in my country, I just got really depressed and gave up. Listening to Jim made me recover my hope and I think I’m going to try to go for it.
Sainthood is actually my favorite T&S album - I’d love to see more of those songs live! Especially Arrow and Sentimental Tune! But I think their show is great no matter which songs they play.
Tegan, I LOVE "Paperback Head" and "Floorplan". I really hope you play those more!!!
I love your guests Jim! We had Mark Hoppus, Ben Gibbard, and now Tegan. Fucking awesome! I deeply appreciate talks about songwriting, musical approaches, etc. It truly helps me as someone writing songs during this time.

Wow she is fantastically well spoken and endlessly cool. She is also gorgeous and amazing, love her!!
It really puzzles me what Tegan said about fans not asking for deep cuts like Paperback Head and Floorplan -- i LOVE those songs, they're some of my favorites of theirs, and if i could tell her something it would be that I'M ASKING for songs like that and i'm sure a bunch of other fans too, and if they wanna experiment and make weird stuff please please do

I agree. Their Floorplan performance in Coachella ‘08 is one of my favorite lives not only of TnS but of music in general, I often watch the video on KZread just to listen to it.

Hop a plane, Nineteen, wake up exhausted for me.
What a great interview. I’ve been a T&S fan since, honestly, Napster existed at the time of their first album and someone in another country on the internet said I might like them. Have never looked back. I’ve been writing songs for a little over a year now and I think the constant reinvention of T&S from album to album has had a huge influence on me. I’ve been doing some electronic style stuff recently as well, and I never expected I would feel drawn to that genre but it’s probably where I feel most comfortable, for the same reasons that Tegan talks about here. Thanks for such an excellent conversation.
I just... can't even... with Tegan. She is just so damn cute. Ever since I discovered her through Against Me's Borne of the FM Waves of the Heart, I have loved her.
I've never really paid attention to Tegan & Sarah outside of a couple singles but this interview makes me want to revisit they're records. Appreciated all the talk about auto-tune and melodyne also. Anytime the interviews get technical I really appreciate that stuff!

This was such a great conversation! So cool to get a look into the thought process and maybe some of the anxieties around writing music. And god, Tegan is so cool lol.
i cant express how much i enjoy this! and this came at a great time. i became sober for 8 months now, after a ten year bender and hiatus from music. and got back into song writing, bought a 2,400 computer and im on my fourth song for my album, and this is helping guide me with my feelings of writing music🤘 love love love you jim❤️
She is ABSOLUTELY beautiful and classy and I love her music....just awesome.....thank you

I'm loving these interviews and truly look forward to them. Thanks for doing these and keeping us inspired.
For me, this is probably the best episode out of the current series when considering music writing standpoints. I can relate and have learn a lot from this discussion.
These episodes are honestly so great. What an amazing gift to have during this troubled year. Thank you so much, Jim and all of the guests involved!
Dude this series absolutely rips. Great guests and chat. Well done and keep them coming :)
Love tegan, such an interesting and knowledgable woman. Thank you for not asking the same old questions, boring for her and us. Thanks for just letting her talk, really enjoyed this!
LOVED this conversation! So great, intriguing and inspiring to get inside your headspace on songwriting, music theory and the creative process. Thanks for sharing!
For what it's worth Jim, I think your voice is fantastic live. What I have always loved about JEW is that I've never heard another artist with a voice that sounds like yours. Not to mention the band together and songwriting is fantastic. I've really enjoyed watching these videos and to hear honest thoughts from other musicians. Thanks to all that have opened up to share on these videos.
This entire conversation was so insightful, thanks for this.
love the technical part you guys talk about e.g in ear mixes and stuff. Keep that up please!
Such a great interview! So inspiring, thanks for doing these!
man, I could had been watching and listen this conversation for hours, thats was... wow!!.. just can't, actually feel that i really can, its just so so so inspiring.
Fantastic interview. Really enjoying these 🖤
I was a fan of Tegan Quin... am a lover now. I really wish I could have heard her talking about anything she likes, all day long... such expression, such honesty and such feeling like she means to the core anything she talks about... girl, I just can't take my eyes off you .. you're my hero ❤️❤️
These first episodes are great! You're actually a great interviewer
Love these chats!! Keep them coming Jim 🙂👍👍👍
It's hilarious this is coming out just as Our Lady Peace has announced they're actually making "Spiritual Machines 2"
As someone who has come to many of your shows... travelled a lot in order to do so. I love it when you play the "non hits". I mean LOVE IT!!! I don't need to hear you sing closer again.
Definitely need to hear more from Sainthood at your shows (especially The Cure). And while we're at it, JEW need to add Episode IV back to the setlist!
Tegan saying "yeah" at 37:19 is the cutest thing I've ever seen
This was such an interesting conversation! When they talked about the possibility (and rejection) of "The Con 2" or "Bleed American 2" I instantly thought about Lady Gaga's "The Fame" and "The Fame Monster". And now, one of my favourite bands from my teenage years, Our Lady Peace has announced that they are making "Spiritual Machines 2".
I'm super high and i only realized at 36:56 that tegan wasn't wearing one of those hair cutting capes. help
Great conversation, that hour just flew by! One of my all time favs is Paperback Head. Maybe some day, when people can gather together again, Tegan and Sara can do a tour of those “types” of songs. I would 100% make sure to grab a ticket!
Really interesting chat, if you're still doing these please consider having Zola Jesus as a guest, imo she's massively underrated and makes really interesting music 🙂
I was literally thinking about how i wanted some input with my new creative flow - and this popped up on my Instagram feed. Perfect timing. Can't wait to meet you live on the meet and greet February 9th.. Get ready for a musical treat
Loooove Tegan and Sara
I want Tegan's reverb.
more artists need to demystify art. so many use obtuse language and play up technical aspects for their ego and it really discourages the young ones coming up. Props to Tegan love love love her music too!
This gives me life.
Great stuff right here
Great episode!
Loved it!
I love Tegan and Sara, they are the best. Kisses from Bogota.
Jim, it's "formative", not "formidable"! Great interview and awesome Fender ad, as always. I kind of agree and disagree about going back to remake an album that was popular--I feel like Recommit would fit right in on Futures, and it's also my favourite off of Surviving. I know that it very probably wasn't the goal when writing it to have it recapture that sound, but the heart of it is right back there. It's not the sound, it's the feeling.
Man I love her laugh this woman is amazing
I love paperback head, on directing, and dont rush soooo much
I love both of you, and I actually agree with the comment on theoretical knowledge kind of putting you in a box, but not being able to figure out your key sigs is a little bad 😅
How about: "Have you ever been FENDERED???" 😉 Thanks a lot for the interview!😊👍🏻
A Tegan and Sara electronic album would be amazing.

Lmao they do have them man. Even a remixes album. And their heartthrob album was apparently electronic experimental and it’s so good too as well
Tegan, I respect that outlook of learning the music your own way. My brother is an amazing guitarist, but he can’t really read sheet music. He can just hear and feel the music. Shouldn’t that matter more?
@brandoncurtis1636
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely important to feel your way through, but having theoretical knowledge is important because you learn to control those feelings rather than them controlling you. It makes your composition less random chords and gives it more intent
saw you live last year in vegas. you were great
A learning moment no matter how long you've been playing
Vast majority of the time, the key is the first chord of the song and in rock you don't need to go any deeper than that. If someone knows enough to tell you you're wrong, then they know theory and they really didn't need to ask in the first place. I love taking the piss out of those people.
Thanks
can I just say, she looks gorgeous here
Ah, yes, my new favourite band; T-pain and Sara😂

Tegan, please record something in whatever room you're sitting in. The natural reverb is beautiful.
I really like these. Would be cool if you did Christofer Drew From Never Shout Never. He Recently released Unborn Spark this year too. Would be nice to get a grasp on his story and stuff
Speaking of album sequels. One of my favourite bands Dance Gavin Dance that blew up with their debut LP literally made a sequel to that record six years later. In their case it was a meta joke about a bunch of other bands in the scene trying to mimic their style and about them returning to original lineup. They have multi-part songs spanning over several records as well so this gimmick kinda worked I guess.
I. Fuckin. Love. Tegan. 😍

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't know or care about all the ins and outs of whatever your instrument is. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years, still don't know the name of most chords/notes unless I really concentrate and try to figure it out (I'm not even sure I'm using real chords in most of what I write! I just put my fingers all over until it sounds good), still don't know anything about effect pedals, and will never know how to read/write music. I basically have to remember everything I write by ear, or the patterns of where I put my fingers on the fret board. I'll never "shred" like Van Halen, but I'm OK with that because for the most part crazy technical lead riffs sound ridiculous, and can ruin the song (with the exception of "hot for teacher"). But IMO, punk rock is more about how the sound moves you, not technical chops
I JUST SAW 555 CLIP FOR FIRST TIME- THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT
Currently in the process of recording, in order, Jaimee Starve Sun, Silence Surrenders, Fog, Transfuse Canadian, Pasts, Run From Shadow, Heal, Authentic, Divided Elation, Withering . Please stand by.
lol how do they not know how keys work?
I don’t know what it is.... but I’m a 20+ yr musician.. and I find countless times ppl like my more effortless music compared to the stuff I really put my soul into.. I just can’t figure out why so many musicians relate to that effect.
I'm loving the show, Jim! The VST plugin Mixed in Key, Studio Edition (mixedinkey.com/studio-edition/) does a good job quickly finding the key(s) of an audio clip. I have no affiliation with them. Alan Walker has songs named Alone and Alone, pt. 2, which is kind of shameless. But hey, all of his songs sound exactly the same; so maybe it's more shameless that they aren't all named that way. Metallica has songs named The Unforgiven, The Unforgiven II, and The Unforgiven III. Maybe they are big enough and good enough because they're unforgiven too...
rad
Turn up the Reverb!

I thought Sainthood was great. It was the last T&S album that I got really into.

Go on rateyourmusic.com and look up any artist you love. Nobody has a perfect discography and all fan bases have their preferences. Artists have almost no say in what gets the nod and what gets a shrug. They can only try to be insightful and creative.
