I felt the same way 30 years ago and have been very grateful for the outcomes. You might already know of his The Power of Myth. There's also an excellent book on the above topic, The Grail by Jung and von Franz. Best of wishes with it!

I remember seeing this on PBS when I was 12 years old. It changed my life. This must have been around 1984.

Campbell at his best. You can see and feel his passion for the topic.

When Joseph Campbell writes, it isn't his personal view, it's from reading and studying every Religion and Culture on Earth. Comparing every Religion against each other across all human history! He isn't just saying this from his friends next door.

I don't think so. He was saying to remain in the middle path, to give neither to the right nor to the left, which means using both and not just one.

All we can do is lean toward the good.

Wish I could have a beer w this legend.

I remember watching this when it was live on TV. I believe he summarized the entire Parzival story as written by Wolfram von Eschenbach (please correct me if I'm wrong). I was so spellbound that I bought the book and read it many times. Those Campbell/Moyers "The Power Of Myth" shows on PBS had me completely entranced. I even embarked upon my own "Hero's Journey" and failed every test presented. Perhaps some other lifetime? (-:

I too have failed many times and it has been my greatest teacher. I love Joseph Campbell.

This man is a great Genius

some things are so obvious, some things are so clear.... Prof Campbell articulates the self-evident into a new realm.... "Nature knows nothing of Good & Evil"

Joseph Campbell has the ability to understand true Mysticism, true Esoteric Path and the meaning of what Initiation means, the true path for transformation, or transmutation if you prefer, of ourselves into better human beings. And this is achieved ONLY, when we understand that to be better occurs in practice of SERVING Humanity. To read his words is a kind of beacon in a dark night. This video explains why he choosed Wolfram Eschenbach to study Arthurian Myths and not no one else.

As far as I remember, the name Parzival means: "pierce through the heart" because of the grief his mother lived with after her beloved Gahmuret's (Parzival's father) death.

As Joseph Campbell tells this story, I hear in the background Jimi Hendrix singing, 🎶AXIS - Bold As Love!🎶 Just ask the AXIS. He (She/They/It) knows everything.

The Grail and the Holy Lance came out of Celtic legend, conflated with Biblical stories. The three treasures of Innis Fail or Faileas were a cauldron (the cup), a spear (the lance) and a stone (Lia Fail, aka the Stone of Destiny often said to be Jacob's pillow)

Probably never going to happen.

There is a certain amount of guilt and shame we experience being living creature that are self aware. We must kill and consume to survive. Hunter gatherers kill animals to live and settled agriculturists displace and deplete the natural environment to grow crops, feed their animals and communities. Even a pacifist and vegetarian must cut down trees and clear forests for timber to build shelters, store houses and structures for animal husbandry. We till up and deplete the soil displacing and destroying our natural environment. We hollow out mountains mining for metals and minerals to construct tools and weapons for hunting, building and self defense. We change the natural course of rivers to create aqueducts and mine for gold. We eat and consume and either kill or destroy living creatures, plants and the natural environment. For those of us who are self aware this brings a feeling of guilt and shame for the destruction we cause. We create narratives of good and evil, heaven salvation and saintly perfection to comfort ourselves and manage our difficult feelings. We long for a return to the unity state (Exile from Eden) and to be free from pain and hardship. In our guilt and fear about being alive we invent religion. We cling to our childish need to be rescued by Godlike figures and are preyed upon by charlatans and false leaders with their golden promises of internal bliss and beatitude. This only adds to our suffering because we feel separated from our "True Home". We are made to feel deeply shameful for being alive and told that we made a bad choice coming to this world. We are born in sin and must suffer in the world of duality, paradox and death because of our disobedience toward God and our selfish desire to become separate and self aware. Because of our "mistake" our fall from grace, we must know the pain of birth, death, disease and old age. Even for those of us who believe in reincarnation we are told that we must become perfect and saintly to obtain release from the bondage of living. In our desperate need to feel good and to be worthy of Gods's love we become deeply divided and reject parts of ourselves that are inescapable realities such as our human nature and the fact that WE ARE BODIES and must acknowledge and mange its needs and desires. For some of us this is intolerable and drives us into madness. We feel rejected by life, by our families and our culture. For some this inner turmoil propels them on a dark path of extreme behavior that swings from denial to hedonism and eventually narcissism and sociopathy. We project our self hatred, self loathing and self rejection onto others simply for being human. We condemn them and use them as scapegoats for our individual and collective guilt and shame. We blame the devil for our negative emotions and predatory behavior. We attack and exploit others in the pursuit of our selfish interests and justify our actions by dehumanizing them. We call them animals, barbarians, subhuman, devils, non believers. They are beyond redemption and deserving of our scorn and hatred. Millions of people have died and suffered greatly because of this madness born of self hatred and the hatred of our fellow human beings. We hate our bodies, we hate women, we hate life and long for death thinking there is a paradise waiting for us on the other side. This leaves us with an inescapable emptiness, a hole in our hearts and a deep hunger that can never be satisfied. This hunger gnaws at us and will not let us live in peace. It has become a blazing forest fire which threatens to destroy us and consume the entire world. Will we awaken to our madness for we are in the eleventh hour of humanity and our future depends on the choices we make.

@@aneily Lol! Welcome to my new cult, it's called reality. It's not very popular from what I hear. People prefer eternal youth beauty and limitless happiness. It seems to sell better. Any lessons we learn are only useful during our lifetime or to those generations of men and women who follow us, no one else.

@@afrosoulstylist Actually it is a pervasive sentiment across many cultures. Take Buddhism which shares this view and is found in India, China and Japan. Please don't poison every discussion with race theory it only dilutes the conversation. Not everything is about whiteness or being black. Get over yourself.

How has the questioning of a cultural perspective philosophy being Western, Eastern, Northern or Southern turned into a matter of race? I'm of Welsh and Scottish descent not black, not that that has anything to do with the discussion at hand, so can see the perspective from a juxtaposition of different angles. I think that you need to get over your pricked ego, from a genuine question that I hasten to add you answered, thank you. Kill the ego, free the mind.

There are several completed versions of the Parzival story - some by Chretien's "continuators," and of course Wolfram von Eschenbach's masterpiece, which he himself completed.

Campbell is actually wrong about some of this. The Grail cannot be the Ka’aba because it didn’t “come down from heaven”; the Black Stone, which muslims honour, came down from heaven (probably a meteor) and this is placed near the Ka’ba. That’s an important corrective
