    Great video! Very thorough. One thing I would add to the drain pipe is a 1/4" pipe cap. It will save a lot of grief if someone ever bumps the handle on the ball valve. While it maybe a slim chance it only takes an extra minute to put it on and take it off. The amount of time spent to clean up even a pop can full of dirty solvent would be much greater. Also safer. Just a thought. Thank you, Jim

    Excellent modifications. These Chinese-made units are fine. But benefit from some extra work. Great idea.

    FYI about the filter mount. It's an Empi 9204 and goes for about $20 delivered on the net. The PSC 1000 parts cleaning fluid from Tractor supply works great. Another good addition is a flow-thru parts brush like they sell at NAPA, part # TSS RP804 for about $16.

    Thanks for following up with the detail. Regarding the cleaning solution, there is a separate posting on the blog regarding this fluid, which happens to be TSC PSC1000. It's been on my "list" to add a flow-thru brush for some time now. Haven't just gotten around to it... yet.

    Great work on the video. It helps me out a lot. I am building a massive 120 gallon parts washer. I have purchased all of my parts and hope to put it together next weekend when I am off. I was uncertain about how best to deal with the wiring of the pump to the switch. I am still not 100% on how I am going to deal with it but I will get it worked out. I will attempt to record my project for other youtubers out there. Thanks again for the video.

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to post it. When you change the filter, do you just waste the solvent that remains in the filter, or do you dump the excess back into the tank?

  • @kwrightway

    @kwrightway

    7 жыл бұрын

    I recover the solvent left in the filter by turning the filter up-side-down and punching a hole in the bottom of the filter canister. I place the filter bottom down on the tank shelf and allow the filter to drain for a few days back into the tank before disposing of the filter. Thanks for the comments...

    Great video. One question. It looks like you external filter is after the intake of the pump. So it looks like all the fluid in the tank goes through the pump before it goes through the filter. Does you pump ever clog?

  • @kwrightway

    @kwrightway

    9 жыл бұрын

    You are correct, and observant, the filter is after the pump. The pump on this unit is a submersible, and the inlet is part of the pump itself. I simply rerouted the out-line of the pump to the external filter. Perhaps I could have adapted this differently, but so far, and it's been a couple of years I've had no issue with the pump clogging. The filter yes, but not the pump... and it gets used frequently. Appreciate the comment...

    Thanks for a great video. Can you tell me what is the brand of the new pump and where you purchased it? All the reasonably priced parts washers I've see come with water based pumps which don't last long.

  • @kwrightway

    Ron I'm afraid I don't know the brand of pump, as this project was completed several years ago and there's no label or identification on the pump body. However, I can tell you that I bought the pump off eBay and it was't very expensive.

    Hi, thank you for your awesome video. I want to use water-based solvent (even tho it doesn't clean as good). I am wondering if the oil filter element will get screwed up by the water based solvent (as in the paper element falling apart)?

  • @kwrightway

    @kwrightway

    +Stanward Oshiro I don't know, but I wouldn't be afraid to try it. If something goes wrong, such as the filter ends up restricting the flow, you can always bypass the filter until coming up with a different filter option.

    Is this parts washer the $160 or so parts washer sold by Speedway? I know it's been a while since you bought it, but was wondering if this is originally marketed as a water-based only parts washer. I have a similar one from Harbor freight, and want to use the crown PSC 1000 solvent as well.

  • @kwrightway

    The washer was a gift, at least eight or so years ago now so I don't know what it cost when new. Regarding the pump, I replaced the original pump before the modifications where made with a solvent compatible pump found on eBay. I believe the original pump was labeled as water-based solvent only, though.

    Very nice video...thank you. Did you have to Prime the filter? I cant get mine to run properly. It is hooked up just like yours. With the same solvent. It is a Harbor freight washer...could it be the pump was for a water base?

  • @kwrightway

    @kwrightway

    4 жыл бұрын

    I have not had to prime my system and I've changed the filter quite a a number of times since this video was made. However, it does take a minute or two before the pump picks up the prime and takes off so don't be afraid to let the pump run for a bit (within reason). I wouldn't hesitate to prime the filter, either. In terms of the pump being made for a water-based solvent, I suspect that's not your problem. Though I don't recall the specifics, my pump was likely made for water also. Thank you for the kind words, and good luck...

  • @kwrightway

    @@DeWaltRadialguy I'd suggest some testing is in order to determine if the pump is functioning and/or the filter not obstructing the flow. To test the pump, disconnect the output line from the pump that connects to the "IN" side of the filter mount and point it into a container or bucket. Turn on the pump and see if fluid is flowing. The next step would be to connect the pump feed line to the filter and remove the spin-on filter from the mount. Put a bucket under where the filter spins on and turn on the pump. This will tell you if fluid is flowing through the filter mount. You could then disconnect the filter output that goes back to the tank and do the same test. Each of these steps will eliminate, or identify, each major component as the issue. The pump, filter mount and filter cartridge, in that order. I suppose it's possible you have a plugged fluid line or defective spin-on filter. However, my bet would be on the pump. Let me know how it goes...

    Great engineering. The only thing I would have done, is add a filter bypass in case you ever need to finish a cleaning job and have a severely clogged filter with not pressure and no clean ones available. Just thinkin worse case scenerio, haha.. Great vid !.

    I like the drain. I took out the plug but I can't find any pipe that will fit. When putting a nut on the plug to find it's size it seems to be 9/16-18. What the heck did you use to put in as pipe nipple? The rest looks like normal 1/4 inch fittings.

    Mike Carlton Did you ever figure out what size this was? I just bought a harbor freight model and running into the same thing. I thought it was 9/16 and its close, but not it! 1/4 inch seems to small to me. I keep seeing mods all over, but no one states the size that that you need at the drain hole.

  • @078249

    @078249

    cashxx Yes I did figure it out. It did end up taking the standard 1/4" galvanized pipe found at home depot & lowes. Valves, nipples and elbows all 1/4" I also measured the base and it fit very well with the mover dolly sold at harbor fright. Just take the measurement with you as they sell a couple sizes. I drilled the pilot hole so not to split the wood and sunk in the wood screws. Good luck. Funny thing is the 9/16-18 tap fits right in but don't worry about it. 1/4 works just fine

    Mike Carlton The drain fitting on my tank is 1/4 inch, though I couldn't find 1/4" at any of the local big-box stores. A local mom-and-pop hardware store had them though.

    Why would you have a filter in the pressure line befuddles me ? Seems like you would want it before its sucked through the pump. My mod to mine is put a sink drain in the middle into a 5 gallon bucket with diesel pump I can fill it up wash stuff then pull the plug and clean the bin

  • @kwrightway

    The unit came with a submersible pump which draws directly from the tank. I simply tied into the output line and routed the flow to the filter. In other words, that's the way it was designed and to date, I haven't had any issues with it.

    I agree water based solvents don't work I bought 100 gallons of solvent back in the early 90's when it was $2.25 a gallon now it's 5-6 times that last time I checked. A friend of mine who lives in California said he could not even find it there he came to AZ where I live and got some from the place I went to years ago it was like $7 a gallon he about crapped him self. The only reason I bought 2 drums of the stuff back then was I got tired of getting more. The problem with solvent is it evaporate sitting in side the bottom of the parts washer you lose about 1/4 gallon every month. I want to have mine drain back into a drum and close 2 valves so it doesn't evaporate.

    +kell490 I keep my washer lid closed when it's not in use and evaporation hasn't been a series problem for me. I do have to top it off one a year or so, but that's about it. Thanks for the comment...

    kwrightway Nice setup I never thought of wheels that is a great idea. Mine needs a new pump it's a harbor freight maybe cheaper to just get a new one from HF I think they cost $80 with the %20 off coupon. I was thinking about trying a EFI fuel pump filter the intake of the pump side to keep it clean. Put a screen at the bottom with 2 handles I could just lift it out and put the junk the trash can.
