Incessant rainfall has caused flooding at several places in Manipur's Imphal West and Imphal East districts after two major rivers breached embankments, prompting the evacuation of over 2,000 people.
At least two people have drowned in Senapati River in Senapati district.
The Imphal river breached its embankment in Imphal West, and the Kongba river in Imphal East.
The Iril river is also overflowing.
M ASHNIKUMAR, Chairman, Loktak Development Authority: "All the human habitation is submerged and considering all the critical challenges, the state govt has taken joint efforts with under the leadership of honourable Chief Minister and with concerned departments and stakeholders and local development authorities also."
Relief and rescue operations are underway for the affected people and at least 20 relief camps have been set up, 10 each in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
L SUSINDRO, Minister, Public Health Engineering Department: "Honourable minister of water resources is doing well but this time this is abnormal rising of the water. Now everywhere in Imphal there are floods."
"There is no defect from government's side but this is just a natural calamity. This is a climate change issue. In just few hours it all happened. It never happened before."
Army, Assam Rifles, state police, Manipur Fire Service along with NDRF and SDRF personnel, besides local volunteers used boats to rescue flood affected people and distribute packaged water bottles and food packets among them.
Several parts of the northeastern state have been lashed by heavy rain in the last few days.
