Partition 1947 | How ‘United Bengal’ Almost Became A New Country | Independence Day

Bengal, once the biggest province of the British Raj, was divided on 15 August 1947 as part of the Partition of India. Predominantly Hindu West Bengal remained with India and a mainly Muslim East Bengal joined Pakistan. But did you know that Bengal, briefly, had the option of staying independent? As a third nation? Here's how Bengal was finally partitioned on 15 August 1947

That was the era when everyone had a good life and india was actually rich.

Finally someone is showing the truth. Unlike India, Bengal was partitioned and divided THRICE, once in 1905, once in 1947 and the last time in 1971. It created a total of three refugee waves which still determines the socioeconomic and political realities of the region. Very few channels would dig deep and show how the ruling Governments at the centre used to turn a blind eye to the millions of Bengali refugees flooding into the country. All talks about 'providing safety' were on paper. These people were highly educated and experienced in their respective fields. In fact, the rise of socialism and communism in Bengal is intricately linked with the plight of these refugees. After taking in millions during the 1947 Partition, things came to a head during the Partition of East Bengal/Pakistan and the West. The streets of Calcutta were filled with millions of educated yet poverty stricken young men and women who lost everything overnight. If you see most of the CPM party veterans, they come from a distinct social sub-division within Bengal, they are called as Bangals (ertwhile residents or children of the residents of East Bengal). It is sad that the majority of the country doesn't see this and know this history. Jyoti Basu, Amartya Sen, Abhijeet Bannerjee and countless others were Bangals. The NRC bill being vehemently opposed in Bengal has roots to this sad history of the region. While the BJP and the ruling TMC have made it a political issue, it a a deeply societal issue. One of the basic tenets of the bill promises citizenship to people who came on particular dates during 1947 and 1971 to India, while disenfranchising the millions who came over the next couple of years. The cultural hegemony of India is a myth. States like Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab have a distinct social history from the Hindi heartland and culture which sort of have a huge influence over national media. This history should be taught to Indians so that they realise that this had happened. The flight of capital and rise of socialism was accentuated by the fact that many highly educated Bengalis from East Pakistan who were promised a better future could not get jobs and opportunities in the new country they had come in because everything was privatised and large corporate establishments needed proofs of citizenships for hiring (which neither the Indian Government had provided, nor did these people have).

@Abhinava Goswami Thanks mate. Frankly, this is the tip of the iceberg. I have this brewing thing inside of me that I have to dig into this aspect deeper. I feel that someone should look into this and document it. I read and write certain things but I fail to get the proper platform to make my gleanings more popular. If the truth is not told, then an important part of the sociopolitical history of Bengal and India would be erased forever.

@@AbhishekKumar-fl8bw The first division of Bengal was also the first division of India based on religious lines. Bengal was divided by the British because of 'administrative purposes' (as told by them). In reality, they thought that sowing the seeds of communal discord would weaken Bengali and anti-British nationalism which was at its peak. They had to reunite Bengal in 1907 simply because they people of Bengal wanted that. However, they knew the State was boiling and to mollify the flames of nationalism, they decided to carve out separate provinces based on linguistic lines. Note here that Bengalis, Odias and Biharis (especially from the Central and Eastern parts) share similar ethnic and social cultures. There is a difference between the languages (although they are still similar). Even the capital was changed from Calcutta to Delhi so that this 'divide-and-rule' could take place. This is the key here. Whatever the British had done, they wanted to further their agenda by capatalising on faultlines- religion, caste, ethnicity etc. The same is done by the BJP now, one way or the other. That is why none of us want them. Many people are vehemently opposed to TMC but BJP is a different kind of venom. They will play the same communal card which led us to this situation. And frankly, they don't even have a decent State President who can be a source of motivation.

Heck they did the same thing to the whole sub-continent. India and Pakistan , the biggest rival in the world, fighting a war based on religious terms. India is the highest importer of Arms and Pakistan has to make shady business with the West and China to keep their economy afloat. If the British left the subcontinent without injecting the differences among us, we would have become more prosperous than the whole Europe.

The thing is bengal province was always freedom oriented, if you go down to history, in the ancient time, during the time of delhi sultanate or mughal period, Bengal province always would declared freedom, fight for it and rule independently. That is why bengal was called bulgagpur. Bengal was a bird not to be caged since the beginning of time as it was so vastly rich in culture and economic status than other states.. this state used to generate nearly 10% of the global gdp. The United bengal (proposed name: Sonar Bangla) as an independent country was inevitable, but religion conflict ripped us apart. And no one other than british to blame for creating the riots and hatred by playing the cruel game of divide and rule policy. In the end of the day whatever happened, happened for better cause. There was no wrong for WB to stay with united india. But the idea of United Bengal could have been revolutionary.

What you tried to deliver here is not totally true. Bengali of East Bengal mostly supported this partition as this would have led to the development of East Bengal. Elites of West Bengal opposed partition opposed this partition. Many reasons have been sighted. One of them was that if Dacca University came into operation it would curtail the funding of Calcutta Univetsity.. The other was said to be that of Elite Calcutta Bengali did not want Eastern Bengal to be developed as Muslims who were majority in East Bengal, would be elevated in all aspect of economic activity Very short sighted thinking, if true!

It is true that people in the then East Bengal supported the partition, Bangabandhu himself was one of them (Check "Aushimapto Attojiboni"). But as years went by, they realized it was a mistake. So they had to fight a bloody war for their Independence. Bangladesh is like an orphan child, seperated from her family at birth, who is trying her best to survive and thrive. But orphans become successful and prosperous too. Let's see what future holds for us, half of our country's probably gonna sink underwater in the 2070s anyway.

Bose and Suhrawardy wanted a separate United Bengal country. Bengal was always a freedom oriented country since the beginning of time and even in Sultanate period, Mughal period, Bengal province often declared freedom from them and ruled as an independent state (bulgag-pur). Bengal was a bird not to be caged but it was british divide and rule theory that created hatred among Muslim and hindus thus resulted in partition of bengal in half.

This is Sarat chandra bose not Shuvas chandra bose. And the direct action day was declared by Jinnah. The riots that happened was as a result of muslim hindu hatred and final nail in the coffin. Suhrawardy cant be only accountable for the riots in fact he tried to lessen it by declaring public holiday unfortunately that backfired. As far as I have read, Suhrawardy was a great leader may be not in the level of Sarat bose. But In india he was mostly hated because of muslim league, the same way here people hated congress. Suhrawardy's proposal of United Bengal eventually failed due to riots in 1946

Well they had lived peacefully together for atleast a thousand years before the first Partition of 1905. Did you not see the video properly? The rise of Bengali Nationalism was led by both Hindus and Muslims to RE-AMALGAMATE the province. One of the major fallouts was that the British were forced to transfer their capital from Calcutta to Delhi, because the city had became very antagonistic towards them. Bengal was the richest province of Independent India. Three waves of Partition and refugee crisis ruined us. It's stupid to blame Hindus and Muslims for it. Leaders like Patel, Nehru and Mukherjee are to be blamed for dismantling an industrialised region into chaos.

I hate it that the Current Indian Administration doesn't revive the Bengal Regiment in the Military, thus West Bengal lacks a Regional Identity based Army in the Indian Armed forces and this keeps a lack of Bengali People interested in the Armed Forces due to lack of Representation. Personally I would be very interested in a Expeditionary Force.

Correction from a Bengali 1) Muslims never fully protested against 1905 partition because this partition made the districts of Muslim majority and where they could rule. Even today Muslims wholeheartedly don't mourn voice against partition of Bengal or celebrate Rakhi Utshob. 2) Indipendent Bengal would have a Muslim majority. Suhrawardy knew that and he could become the leader of whole Bengal. Jinnah supported because with Muslim majority Bengal would be close to Pakistan rather than India. 3) We Bengalis are lucky that we are born in West Bengal. Bengali is my identity.

@@Rubychan-ce7sz Communal riots was injected by the British. And since we/ you all are living in a separate country with different mindsets, your thinking has different logics and I respect that. There are some places in the Caribbean which are part of European countries and they enjoy better life. If Bangla were a part of England till now, we would of course enjoy a better life to some extent. My point is living a better life doesn't always stand in one's way when it comes to OWN FREEDOM. A country of my own, governed by the people of my own, speaking the very own language, united together from pre 1946 perspective, is still better. There are minorities and there are some separate occurrences I admit but with West Bengal part of Bangladesh, it would be a union state with two separate states, east and west according to religious group would still better. Bangla was the richest, Bangla was the smartest and united we would still thrive as one of the best nation on earth. Again I respect the current system.

Political boundaries are created based on political interests but culture cannot be divided. These boundaries give birth to nations but doesn’t change the culture. Culture evolved over thousands and thousands of years. One may create a hundred boundaries but the culture never fades away. People carry their culture within themselves. Boundaries are created just on land but one cannot ever separate the culture from the people. ‘The Great Bengal’ that once used to be is still united by its very culture.

This partition broke the back of bengal's economy. Majority of lands, properties were separated from mainland India though the owners of those lands, even after losing everything, chose to stay back in West Bengal, India. From then, Bengal's economy started to deteriorate. Even today, land is a huge problem in Bengal when finding space for a heavy industry. The pain that we've buried inside our heart, has always been unsung. We had to pay a heavy price to bring freedom to the nation.
