Partially Examined Life

On Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business (1985) with guest Brian Hirt.
How does the form in which we receive media affect how we think? Education theorist Postman (building on Marshall McLuhan) claimed that television has eroded our capacity to reason and given us the expectation that everything in the world must entertain. Is this a viable piece of social construction theory? How does the critique apply to the Internet age?

Oh man, after reading this book a couple times now, and really enjoying it for the most part, I can’t tell you how great it was to hear the different takes from everyone. I’m definitely Postman-sympathetic but still.

The advertising in the middel was pretty hillarious, especially considering the topic - great irony/ satire!

We just need more MORE MOOOOREDIDDLY-ORE - Neil Postman-minded people in this world now, than less. Yeah, it's not high-falutin' academic philosophy, sirs, ~ But Neil Postman never ever stops asking the questions. Brilliant people still ask naïve questions. I've even *successfully used one of his questions in my practice as a (new) lawyer, twice, in letters to the other side who were engaging in chest puffery (get my drift?). This one question, bamboozled the opponent lawyer on two occasions, made them state and face their (unethical) motives and play fair. The question is: "What is the question, to which [X - or what you want from me/my client] is the answer?" Get it? What is the question you are trying to answer with your request for X? That question I will nebver forget, came from a talk of his where he relays a tale about electric windows and cruise control in cars. What is the problem to which the electric window is the solution? He asks the car salesman. So that you don't have to use your arm to wind it up and down, was the reply (it was about that or cruise control). Well, saving his arm from winding the window up and down, was not a problem Mr Postman' sought to solve. That solution became the problem then - because 'added extra' electric windows and cruise control were non-negotiable so called extras, that could not be stripped off the basic model, but added a non negotiable "extra" expense to the cost! Hey _ I love your podcast, and youtube channel I really do. Have listened off and on since 2014. I recall listening to one of your early episodes where even you guys spoke about what the "problem" was to which the podcast was the solution. It was something like, because you guys met in college, loved having these conversations, were accomplished at it, well whatever reason - point is ... hmm what was my point? (*see I glanced at another person's comment then and lost my train of thought* 😵‍💫) - This guy - >>> THOS ONE >>> kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaaFx9WbqLKsftI.html is right up Postman's alley too. ('edited comment') ttttttttoooooooooooooooooloooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnngggggggggg rrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeefffffffffffrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnn from reading my message ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ............... thanks for featuring Postman.

Have any of you read or listened to Mr. Postman's own commentary about the book?

What happened to american intellectual that he/she became so afraid of value judgement? Any hint of morality immediately produces negative reaction from him/her.

@@ThePartiallyExaminedLife At one point in the book, Postman writes "What would you think of me, and of this book, if I wrote that I'm going to take a pause in my discussion, that I'll return soon, and then write a few paragraphs on behalf of United Airlines or Chase Bank? You'd think this book was unworthy of your attention." That's because we expect books and films to have continuity, but we don't expect it from TV or podcasts.

Top comment seems like a useless rationale rambling of someone with too much to say
