We have documented every step - from its build to transport, and will continue to do so to the day that it extracts waste from one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. Interceptor 004 has a story of its own and you can follow it in this special Interceptor 004 series.
With behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews with the teams persevering for its success, you will witness why the Interceptor is crucial to The Ocean Cleanup's mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic.

Live cameras on your Interceptors could bring in so many new viewers and possible donations to the project. Something to consider, thanks for what you folks have accomplished and we all look forward to what’s next.

That would be most awesome. I was already searching for something like we got when Wilson first went offshore. I can already imagine putting all those streams together into one view or running image detection on the video stream to analyze what kind of trash is being picked up!

@@morphkogan8627 This is true! Plastic recycling is a complete joke and just a way for the plastic manufacturers to move the problem onto the consumer
I just signed up for monthly donation to The Ocean Cleanup. It's small, but I want to contribute to all the work and effort you guys do. I really appreciate and support the work you've done!
Well done for installing number 4. I saw that a big part of the intercepted stuff from the river was green. Things like leaves and branches from trees. I wonder how big of an impact that has on operations, and how the non-plastic which is caught is handled. Greetings from Rotterdam
Let's go!! Still 996 interceptors left to put in place, lot of work still to be done.
A slight modification, If the Interceptors had a panel that went from the back where the rubbish is collected, out a few feet and dipped 6-12 inches below the surface, it would catch hold of the floating vegetation. Pushing it under the interceptor, leaving the plastic floating, and into the interceptor. Cos the vegetation will have part of it below the surface, unlike plastic that floats on top of the water.

I believe water hyacinth is not native to these waters and it is probably a good idea to get it out of the water.
I am so proud of everything you have achieved especially during the pandemic. I'm so glad I randomly watched the unveiling of the first interceptor. That was the defining moment in my life that made me rethink my view on plastic. It makes me so happy to know my donation is actually making a difference keep up the amazing work.

We're glad our Interceptor made such an important impact on the way you think of plastic, Matthew. Thanks for your support!
I think it's absolutely incredible that the NAVY are involved!! Way to use the military forces for good!
I am so happy to see this ingenious work functioning and that despite the difficulty and setbacks caused by the pandemic, bad weather and so on, the 004 interceptor is up and running again. I am happy that it is in my country. I know this is the beginning of a beautiful work towards the improvement of the handling of plastics and of course the care of the island's natural water resources. I know that this will permeate the hearts and minds of young people to be part of the change. I am one of those! Many blessings.

Thank you for your kind words, Solibel. While the deployment of 004 was not without its unique challenges, we are also happy to have solved them, and hope that our small efforts will be the start of many good things to come.
Swear I will contribute to you guys financially when I get a job! Thank you for your service to the present and future generation of the world!!
What you guys are doing is amazing. I bought from you guys my "Ocean Cleanup Sunglasses" and I tell everyone to support your efforts. Keep it going
Brilliant, whoever invented the intercepted is a genius. Thanks for constantly cleaning our rivers and ocean. Let’s get more Country’s involved and thanks again for your dedication for cleaning our environment.
As a Dominican I want to thank y’all for all the good you’re doing for the environment and for the Dominican Republic
Absolutely Brilliant!!! Congratulations to every one at The Ocean Cleanup, The Dominican Republic Navy and Government and local officials and organisations - what beautiful sight she makes - she will inspire many people and start a new movement in their country. This is just awesome!!!!
Please bring this to India! I hope this could get installed in the rivers of Kolkata, Mumbai and other big cities of India!
I look forward to the day that there are tankers collecting ocean trash. You're doing a great job!
this makes my soul smile
As always, it is super exciting to see updates from you guys. A lot of people talk about saving the world, The Ocean Cleanup is out there doing it!
You need a break away system on the boom that releases on an over load and can be reset. The system could still have a long line connected to the boom so the boom could be hauled back in and reattached. Although a mechanism like a ski boot binding could work, also a cheap aluminum pin that shears in case of a boat collision or storm over load.
Suggested solution for the water hyacinths: Could the interceptor have a camera detecting what is about to enter it and if it detects the level of water hyacinths is above a certain threshold, it activates a diverter/bypass, blocking entry to the interceptor and allowing everything in the barrier to bypass the system until the water hyacinths concentration is below the threshold? This could also be manually activated by operators as a precautionary measure ahead of weather events that are likely to cause issues. Yes, this might mean some rubbish gets missed while the interceptor is in divert/bypass mode, but weigh that against the downtime of a clogged system or the bins getting emptied with mostly water hyacinths in them...
THANK YOU GUYS❤️🥰!! You are saving the planet each day you clean our oceans. Education, information, infrastructure, and caring are also requirements for success in cleaning our beautiful planet.
What is done with the plastic that's collected? THANK YOU for your work!!! This is needed in so many places, no doubt!
I've been following for several years. So happy that this is coming together so well. Solution: to bring awareness to the people and countries about waste and water management. Kudos team!

Congratulations to the entire team on splendid work on this project. I have a suggestion, "Automated SORTING Mechanism" you can implement automated sorting using robotic arms or some other mechanism that will separate the organic matter from plastics. I believe some systems exists out there that can do this tedious and difficult task using high speed cameras, robotic arms, air guns that literally blow the lighter plastic material off the conveyor into a secondary collection unit. I emphasize sorting because, it appears there is just too much garbage in most rivers and you would probably end up collecting too much organic material which would end up decomposing in the open anyways. I know that will be the case when you use this system in most of South East Asian rivers and Indian rivers.
Thanks guys, really thank you for all the things you are doing ☀
Good for all of us !
Great work...many thanks to the whole team!!!
Congratulations team! Well done and what an achievement!

Great job guys!!
The critics can say all they very well want but the fact of the matter is you guys are trying something which means in time we will have a far better version of tech or policy to prevent the issue and the interceptor is an amazingly beautiful piece of technology thank you truly thank you it warms my heart to see people doing something to help the great mother of us all 🌍
Great work guys.keep going👍
This is truly fantastic work, but perhaps even more important will be education and waste management, as mentioned in the video. If people just keep throwing all their junk into nature and rivers, this problem will never stop.
Aye m8’s, another great step! Bit by bit we shall make it! 💪
8:30 well said sir. the placement near the bridge is ingenious!
You guys are doing amazing work cleaning up the growing plastic and garbage pollution in the water!
From a funding perspective, getting these machines onto rivers like the Thames or Danube would help finance projects in less affluent areas.
@RobinClower

Not really. There's not enough plastic that enters the ocean from those rivers that governments would want to pay for the interceptor, especially at an increased price. Plus, every one that's placed sub optimally just means more plastic enters the oceans.

Looks like it is capturing just as much plant life as well
Ocean CleanUp is doing so much 💪on a global scale to help clean Oceans and Rivers. Is anything else being done on the ground by local Governments to help educate people about the importance of taking care of their environment (especially those leaving in coastal lines)? Can local Governments provide more resources (trash containers or frequent regular pickup of trash) so people can take ownership of their environment and keep it clean for the health and safety of their children, and future generations. Perhaps getting local team to volunteer and organize coastal clean ups every month will also help. I don’t leave anywhere near a body of water, but I would totally volunteer. just saying; 😌

be proud. you are amazing.
I sure as hell hope you're getting some funding from the plastics industry. In fact they should be funding the whole thing
What about using computer vision to differentiate between plants (hyacinths) and trash? You could redirect the hyacinth away from the interceptor mouth so to not clog it up
great work! Keep it up!
Good Job, Excellent Job... may Allah reward you
