This was the first time I used the Shopsmith lathe and gouges. The other person in the video is my brother in law, who was giving me some much needed pointers on how-to. I obtained a sharpening jig shortly after this was recorded, and I can not express what a huge difference it makes to have sharp tools. It is a game changer! After I turned the handle on the lathe, I used the belt sander to get the appropriate shape. Next was carving and shaping the tip of the handle to fit in the axe head. This is the 1st handle I personally made, and other than a few small things it turned out pretty well.
