Part 36! 1968 VW Radical Custom What Goes Up MUST Come Down 🪟 ⬆️
Ian said it would get weirder .... 👽 👽 Ian and his "envisioning tools" are getting the job done. Ian fabs the window mock up and even makes it roll up and down! All on the fly from his engineering mind.
The saga continues....And Who said kustoms were easy or took under an hour to create? Ian Roussel is home alone on the ranch for a few days and started "Camera on a stick" to showcase the structural aspect of his kustom door.
There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing KZread audience.

Glad you're back at it. Very interesting how that window thing works. Was there a doorbell right at the end of the video? LOL I don't have a doorbell and I was like wait where did that come from haha I cannot wait to see the finished product on this VW

I started cracking up laughing when you said Ian had some mad scientist stuff going on because I was thinking the same thing at the same time. Ian put that marker in his mouth and you could see that he was in his zone.

To simply quote Monty Python, " Doctor, my brain hurts!" That was pretty impressive!!👍 The fact that you can move from one project to another with ease is incredible!! No stagnation!!

I fully agree with you. It’s amazing what he does, and yet he goes from one project to another and back again without flinching and his work is phenomenal. Can’t wait to see the bag finished. I love my Beetles.
I'm a simple man. I see work on this car, I click. I can't wait to see this thing finished and rockin' out!

I think when Ian is finished with this bug is going to be a work of art. I can’t wait for it to be finished. I fully agree with you.
Love the laid back attitude from both you guys. It's not something you see often in build videos.

I agree with you. Another thing about Ian is that he is humble and I think that just makes his videos even better to watch. I tend to watch a lot of American car shows, but they all seem to let the fame go to their head, whereas Ian doesn’t. He is so chilled.

Remarkable to watch this coming together. Such ingenuity.
Very cool ideas! That door is one of a kind! Maybe a metal cradle for the glass? That way the slots and holes would be in the metal cradle? Just a thought I had. Hang loose!
When she said mad scientist ideas going on, I was thinking the same. Imagining in my head how does he see these things so quickly and easily. The kind of stuff that keeps us watching.
Awesome to see a master at work. Also good to see Ian relaxed when something isn’t going according to plan and not see him get frustrated and throw what he is working on across the garage ,lol!

Very innovative window mechanism you have figured out there Sir. That whole car is going to be killer when you are finished with it.
This is some mad science material … and the exact reason I watch this show. You just never know what Ian is going to do next ❤
Sooo cool and inspiring. Reminds me not to overthink it. The old "K.I.S.S." method...
Ian I don't know if you would be interested. I worked at a Fiat dealership in the 70s before I went to the army. The 850and 124 spiders had a cable system that welded into the inside of the doors. Living in Pennsylvania in the winters the cable idler pulley would rust off of the door inside. We used the braze them back in. The first one I did was working fine. I was cranking the window up and down and the service manager came over and said I see you have working. He said come over here and look at the outside of the door. I guess I got carried away with the torch. There was a large burn spot in the paint. I was loosing it. The service manager was a really great guy. He told me to go to the detail shop and get the detail paint gun. He sanded and painted my screw up in no time. I learned a lesson that day to pay attention where I'm putting the torch when brazing
Jamie's music addition gives us the vibe of a early home rod shop from the hey day of hot rodding.

Happy Sunday
"You've got some "Mad Scientist" vibes going on right now, Gomez!" is a joy to behold! Ha! Ha! Keep bringing it!!!
Ian displays mastery of his trade in ways that I would not even imagine, possible. His ability to imagine possibilities of set ups and functioning are something to behold. It is even difficult for a person like me to follow his conceptualizing and creative processes. Somethimes I have to stop the video and rewind to see how he sequenced all these steps. Love this show!
well played putting that window mechanism together so quickly. Instead of slotting the glass, I think it could pivot at the glass and also pivot where the track mounts to the flat bar. Then whole track can swing back and forth when you go down and up to account for the arc... Thanks for taking the time to ship everything out - love the eyemuffs.

Awesome to have you back Ian. Glad to see you’re working on the bug. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next instalment. LOL. Still a great fan of your work and your videos. Love Miss Shadows little white paws. Also cut a few more holes in the ally window and you could go full on Mad Max 😮😉😂
Shadow taking her new apprentice shop inspector training seriously.
The window track was amazing
Ian is an amazing craftsman.
You are a great custom builder not like that guy in Canada , chad
Totally mesmerized by your work process. Very cool!
That's pretty awesome man! Not to many videos out there showing the fabrication of a custom door mechanism. I think you got it once everything is anchored down tight with nylon bushings and some grease that baby will be smooth as silk. Great work brother! 😉✌
I work with wood like you work with steel. Love your wild ideas Ian. Hi Jamie. 👍🏼🇦🇺🇺🇸🤟🏼
I pick up a lot of tips when I watch your videos so I will give you one back: If you trim the lower front corner of the window "glas" as much as possible and also swing it inwards a bit, you will get the window even further down. Also decreases the chance of cracking it as sharp corners are more exposed...but...I guess you have already thought of that :)..AND Im only 15 minutes into your video when I write this .😊
Love that smile of success.
It’s great to watch you work from imagination to fabrication to implementation. I believe someone at Disney coined the term “imagineering”. Anxious to see the next VW door design and implementation video utilizing the hydraulic cylinder. Also, another superb effort by your director, producer and videographer !!!!
Can't wait to see this completed

I am so intrigued by your work, can't wait for next episode!
Ian, your vision and imagination astound me! Carry on Sir.
Greetings from South Carolina... just a suggestion...on that top pivot that has to move @3"". make another channel that you can glue to the bottom of the window with a track..with a pivot roller wheel. Like the old school window tracks. That will give you, your movement & ease of resistance?
Pretty stinking amazing. New shop inspector adds to the already cool crew.

We agree! She’s a sweetheart and so cute!
Love the skill saw cut
Another option instead of slotting the glass would be to use a track with one or two wheels that some cars have that use a register mechanism with an arm to move the glass up and down. The ones I've seen have holes in the glass that allow the track to be bolted to it. A slotted hole in the glass would probably crack the glass during use with just a little side load. Sorry if I seem like Mr. Knowitall. It's just the engineer in me. I've learned some much from watching you work; it's a pleasure to see it in action! Cheers
Absolutely amazing work Ian, I am So impressed! Love watching the wheels turn in your head. I was thinking split the windows but now you are totally on to it for sure!

A crazy crazy idea I had, what if the seats slide out with the doors? That would be so cool.
A true master at work
OMG! That window is going to look hot. You could’ve taken the easy route and split it into two but you didn’t. That’s what I love about your work. I commented on another one of your videos little while back that I would love to come, and either work with you, or for you, and I got a reply from one of your subscribers saying, an Englishman in the desert! I had to laugh, because 1: I am a sunworshipper and 2: I’m not originally from England. I’m originally from Africa. So I love the hot weather and especially when it’s a dry heat like you have there. I cannot wait for this bag to be finished because that is going to belong in a motor museum. That is, of course after you take it to SEMA. Please keep up the great work and once again blessings to you and Mrs Ian from England.
I quite enjoyed the prototype tinkering 👍
With the door mechanism you could use the hydrolic system with a bar and sleeve with a thread towards the end to turn the door upwards🤔
Cool plan so far. Rear of window can have pivot and forward slider. Front of window rolls downward vertically. That will draw rear pivot forward and can also be slightly downward to pull it lower.
It’s really something watching you work through the window roller. Agreed about the “ mad scientist vibe “ and get it when the juices are flowing let them flow. Tesla used to see it in his mind too. It does all start there. Enjoy all your vids and appreciate that you share them. Thanks u2
You are a master custom builder
I did the exact same thing that you did with the tubing but I made rain gutters for my 54 Willys jeep wagon. The previous owner decided to shave the old ones off and then rain would run directly into the vehicle 🤓
I love your beer engineering...!
Been waiting for more work on the bug. You have amazing abilities

Someone's knockin' at the door, Somebody's ringin' the bell, Someone’s knockin' at the door, Somebody's ringin' the bell. Or you could just roll down the window. Amazing!!

Glad to see you guys back I was going into withdrawal 😁
Ian, at some point are you planning to transfer all this creativity to an original door shell, it might help organize the crank assembly and window slide ! Just looking forward a little.
I thoroughly enjoyed how you explained and showed the development of window tracks. The door pivot. Looking forward to next video. Thanks
Nice , there's a clip on window pivot you can use for your pivot . Then try getting a lower window track and make it slide able
Ich freue mich schon auf daß Endergebnis und die super Arbeit von Ian
Absolutely amazing! That’s gonna be so sweet! Good stuff!

the time consumed by inventing a functional design by ingenuity is unbelievable! Don't think anybody realizes how much planning, then trial and error, and then more planning goes into it. Mechanical and geometrical knowledge is so very important when it comes to garage engineering (stay in school and stay curious)! GREAT JOB! And great job explaining all of it as you go, too! Thank you sooooo very much. 👽💖👽
