Part 2 of the traditional bell ringing for the feast of Saint Martin in Caspano

The small bell tower of the Church of Saint Martin in Caspano (Italy) was restored in 1774, when the typical white belfry was built in addition to the old stone base. The structure supporting the bells is still made entirely of wood and was built in 1794, when the minor bell was recast. The structure has three bells, rung by bellringers a few times a year when the church is in use.

The recordings were made on 11 November, a beautiful sunny day. The panorama of the Valtellina mountains shows a beautiful church, built in the middle of the forest. The three very old bells are rung using ancient techniques. The bells are rung by pulling the strings, when the bells are in motion, or by stretching some small iron ropes, which are tied to hands and feet to make the still bells ring and thus compose festive melodies.

- Second bell in D flat, cast in 1697
- Largest bell in A, cast in 1713
The church was built at the end of the Valtellina War, which involved the nations engaged in the Thirty Years' War. The small oratory was built on an earlier place of worship from the 16th century, built during the struggles between Catholics and Protestants. The church had been built near an old cemetery, used as a burial ground for the many plague victims. One of the best canvases painted by the most important local artist is the one on the high altar placed there in 1715. The oratory dedicated to St. Martin of Tours was enlarged in the second half of the 18th century.
