Part 1: Tama Bell Brass Snare Test, Tama v. DW, Tama Bronze Rims Test

WARNING DRUMMERS ONLY - I wanted to get some sound files out on the Tama Bell Brass Snare. The legend of the Tama Bell Brass Snare Drum is well documented. These drums were used on some of Rocks greatest recordings. What makes them so special is their versatility and that famous fat tone. I was fortunate enough to test a Tama Bell Brass and DW Bell Brass for comparison. Both weigh over 20 lbs. This is the heavy weight champion of snare drums. Numerous times I have reached down and grabbed the drum to lift it up, and stop in belief the snare stand is still connected to the drum. Fooled again! It's just that heavy! The Tama is a few pounds heavier. I have always suspected that the Tama sound was due to it's cast bronze rims. So to see if it was true, I tested a pair of (raw) Tama Bell Bronze Hoops. The next part of the test I will install the Tama rims on the DW drum, and compare again. We will also get a comparison of the Attack drum heads installed on both drums.
This was recorded with a camera mic only - no effects.

I love my DW heavy brass snare, but, I'd bet that I would love the Tama, if I owned one! The Horst Link era Sonor heavy brass snare would also make a fine comparison too, but I don't have that beast...

Is the DW snare the actual cast snare they stopped making in 2003, the rolled 3mm "bell brass" snare that is in currently production, the dw 3mm rolled "bell bronze" in current production, or the knurled bronze also currently in production on their website? I've seen this video many times, but I didn't think to ask. I noticed the 3 position strainer on the dw snare and I don't think that strainer was on the old dw cast bronze models. I could be wrong. The thing is that tama snare is the old sand cast model with the bell brass hoops so that snare will sound 100 times better than any of the dw rolled brass and bronze snares currently in production.

You are correct. The drum in the video is the rolled bronze version. As you can hear in the video, once the DW has the Tama cast rim on top it sounds very similar to the Tama (cast bronze). The DW with Tama rims is does not sound as good as the Tama but is close and a cheaper and more readily available alternative. I tried the the bottom Tama bronze hoop on the bottom of the DW and it choked it down. I did not show that demonstration in the video.

Vorgaloth I used 320 sand paper followed by 0000 steel wool. Finished with car wax to keep them from tarnishing. 0000 steel wool works great on all chrome pars as well. Try it you will be amazed.

Iv always played wood rims to get that "homerun, baseball bat" perfect side stick, and an amazing rim shot, and it does work REALLY well. BUT, cast bronze hoops and drum is the ultimate. Iv gotta have this one day. The way it makes the drum song is just incredible.

these are insanely awesome snare drums. Is there anywhere I can find these bell brass hoops? Or any brass hoop for that matter? Thanks so much for this post, those tama's really are amazing. I've been researching bell brass cast snares for some time, and I like the Gretsch series ... price is right, if combo'd with a hoop like that, it would be very similar in sound. 3mm cast... the key is those hoops though for sure. :)

Fury Things The DW 3mm bell brass is likely the cheapest option for a cast bronze shell drum. I have auditioned several others including the Gretch. I bought the TAMA drum on ebay and I also purchased the bronze tama rims on ebay. I think if you can find just a top rim you can get close to the tama sound on the DW drum. There is also a company in Italy - LeSoprano Drums that use all bell brass components on their drums. I think they will sell you a new bronze rim. I do not know the cost. I will try to put up a post for the LeSoprano drum soon. . All the metal parts on the LeSoprano drum are made from bell bronze (but they install them on wood shell drums) They have a very unique sound.

@jarrahdrum I'm selling mine. It's a brass drum with a rolled and welded snare. The weld is very well hidden which is what fools people. Gretch is very misleading with the marketing for this drum.

I have sold the Timbales. I loved them but had no real musical context to really deploy them. When selecting this pair I decided to go with the low tones that are rare but specific to this model. They referred to them as thunder timbales A signature series - Tito Fuente I think?

Dude you gotta tune them to the same pitch. That's like comparing acoustic guitars, one in E and another in D. You can't compare these in any way if they aren't pitched the same. It's cool to see a demo but...
