Not a trainer but I use a harness with a two point lead for my dog never have issues of being pulled or the dog getting hurt

I don’t think you’re being honest. I’ve put a prong collar on my own neck it causes discomfort if pulled. It doesn’t puncture the skin. I don’t know if someone sharpened the prongs or left a dog hooked up to it tied up outside.

Prong style collars cause countless injuries in patients at my animal hospital It doesn't matter how good a tool is if the users don't know how to use it When it's infection, injury, trauma, and aggression as potential down sides I will take the "less effective" training tools and recommend them to everyone else I know as well.

More common injuries from the basic flat collar We only use slip leads at my work, wishing I could use a prong from a few dogs because they’re gasping for breath by the time they are back to their kennel. 😅unfortunately we don’t have time for formal training lessons though, that’s on the owners. But I agree that people shouldn’t use a prong without knowing how to actually use it

A slip lead isn't "positive only". This guy doesn't know what he's doing. A slip lead, when used correctly, allows the dog to look forward or at the handler, nowhere else. And they cant leave your side. The pong collar is meant to do the same thing in breeds with very thick fur. This guy is a phony.

I don't care how many times you put up videos for those prong collars, I absolutely refuse to use them. I have seen the damage they cause. Yes I know people don't know how to use them properly but even people that do know how to use them properly still injure their dogs. I'm not doing it. I trained my dog just fine without one and she's doing just great without one. I got her when she was 10 weeks old, by the time she was 6 months old she knew all basic commands and a couple of tricks. She is now 5 years old and knows over 30 commands tricks and hand signals. She is still learning. I am constantly training her. She learned something new at least on average once a month. Sometimes she picks it up right away and sometimes it takes her a little bit. But eventually she gets it. And this is all been done without a prong collar, without a choke lead or anything other that can hurt a dog. Smartest dog I have ever had! I absolutely love staffordshire terriers!

I totally agree. I honestly hate any kind of collar that might be able to cause injury like that. So many dogs have died by collars like the two in his video. Not to mention shock collars. Those things are just cruel.

My mom volunteers at a dog shelter and she will occasionally rescue dogs that are on the streets/lost, and every time she has got one with a prong/shock collar, the dog is usually insanely scared and will crouch and shake because of the collar and it’s abuse. I hate those collars, and one time in my neighborhood me and my mom found a dog and it had a shock collar and we felt really bad, and the owner walked to his car as if he didn’t care or notice his dog was gone and we asking him like “hey if this ur dog?” And he just didn’t seem to care…I feel bad for Wally (the dog)

They can be necessary for large adult dogs who've had little to no training - if you got the dog as a puppy it shouldn't be necessary unless you got a breed outside of your capabilities They aren't painful when used correctly - the ban was because too many people didn't

I absolutely agree that beginners shouldn’t be using a prong collar. When I first started dog training I used slip leads thinking prong collars were inhumane but I’ve realized it’s using them incorrectly that creates unnecessary stress & pain. Always ask someone who knows more than you about something you’re trying to learn about!!!

Agreed. Wound up going to a professional dog trainer because the amount of pulling my dog was doing was actually throwing out my back. He recommended both a prong collar and an e-collar, showed me how to properly use both and told me the exact effects improper use could cause. After only a few weeks the pulling had stopped and we both enjoyed our walks a lot more ^^ And yes, I tested both on myself.

100% I remember when my brother got a prong collar for his dog, I thought it was inhumane and lazy of him, because my first dog always walked beside me with zero training. 12 years later and after getting a new dog and literally spends thousands of dollars on trainers and equipment, I finally tried prong and shock collars under the guidance of a professional police dog/ hunting dog trainer. And the difference it made in as short as 2 weeks. It's really about learning what works for your dog and learning to use them correctly.

My dog gets excited when he sees the prong collar because he knows that I get really happy when we train with that collar and he gets lots of treats and I don't have to fight and all I have to do is light tugs...

No. Prongs are very gentle compared to a slip or even just a flat collar. My dog pulls hard and literally hurts himself if I try a flat collar, but he's fine using a prong and never had issues. Its sad people don't get that and think I'm mean to my dog.

Alot of people dont think to look up the pros and cons. but this is one thing that has too many cons. Plus people who are ignorant will yank them and cause major damage/accidents. It has happened, even if they are blunt, fitted right, etc, They still can malfuntion. just like a cars breaks, things can fail. personally its not proper to use that or any collar but thats only my opinion.

It’s called correction, most dog trainers use pain as a corrective tool. There’s a way to turn the pain or pressure off and corrections should only be used after the dog understands the job they’re doing or the command they’re obeying. That’s why choke chains and prong collars work, they only apply pressure when the dog walks out of the heeling position.

Their mothers do that. Most people don't leave their puppies there long enough to learn manners. However, its around 10-12 weeks of age that they get sent to the timeout by mom.

I prefer to teach my dog to walk on a loose harness but I know that actually takes work and nobody does that these days

I like a regular collar with just a least attached. also helps if she tries to go somewhere in the house she is not allowed. or outside (like holding her when accepting a package) she can go without a leash, but is easily distracted by other dogs. and easily spooked by fireworks (loads of people light it where I live, all year long. ) don't want her to run into traffic. but she doesn't pull so hard you need a prong collar or anything that hurts her.

Tried harnesses with my dog, she a blend of 3 working/herding dog breeds and is nearly to my hips. A harness just gave her more strength to pull. I tried everything before moving to a prong collar and it has made a world of difference. Using a prong collar takes work if used correctly. My girl walks at my side now and if a rabbit or small child runs in front on her she doesn't even flinch at it. I also have a shock collar for her (never goes above 2/10). I've had dogs all my life and have never put more work into training a dog than with my current, all with a professional trainer that trains police dogs and herding/ hunting dogs. Some dogs just need more aggressive forms of training, but no means is it cruel or lazy.

I have a husky. I use a prong. I finally tried one. Before she got to wear it I used it on myself for a full day. I have a Herm Sprenger 2.25mm. It doesn’t hurt... at all.... I was able to yank on myself all day without discomfort. I’m pretty sensitive. This thing works so well on my girl and she loves it. She waits patiently for me to put it on and she’s not remotely scared of it. And she’s very clear about her boundaries.... turn on the ceiling fan and watch her disappear, she’s terrified of that (a wip). It’s a great tool. I swear most people who hate them are using the wrong size. 2.25mm is the perfect size for her, and she’s got a massive (18”) neck.

@@failtolawl I suppose I'm fortuante to have a rather easy going dog as such. Positive only (well, as close to it as I can get), is going ok. Some things have taken a while for him to pick up, but it's getting there. He now sometimes walks heel without me ever really diehard training it. (I reward it cause it's nice he does it sometimes, but I've always aimed for sniffy walks to tire him out anwyays.) It's my first puppy. Easy first timer breed though. The thing with positive only is it takes skill to manage. I am not manging always positive only, and he's an easy puppy. I think he'll be a happy well adjusted dog in the end. I sometimes wonder what happened to problem dogs to begin with, to make them bad. Like say resource guarding. I always have (and probably will keep doing) traded for things my puppy has stolen or picked up he shouldn't have. Well, indoors anyways. Should have been on top of that outside too, as he now swallows as fast as he can outside. We're working on it. But ye, newbie, so it's whatever. But I think one should start out as positive as possible from puppyhood, and then cross whatever bridge one gets to if problems develop.

I'm a balanced dog trainer, but I don't pull. If you pull a dog that is out of control, he wants to go into opposite direction. It's a very quick pressure on pressure off movement and can be done on a slip lead. I've trained dogs that wanted to kill me, no issues. And no, I've got nothing against pinch collars when properly used. Cookie cutter positive reinforcement only trainer use harnesses or flat collars, not slip leads. I'm just saying, don't underestimate the power of the slip lead, just dont pull, but give it a quick snap. If I had one collar to choose from for the rest of my life, it would be the slip lead.

This is true, the Ieash is for transferring energy, aka a caIm assertive correction. If your dog is puIIing and a correction doesnt work they have too much energy, thats why Caesar wouId take them out on roIIerbIades. I dont think this guy cares about how many dogs have had their necks torn up by owners who take his YT advice. I dont think most proffesionaIs prefer prong coIIars either, I either use a sIip or a shock coIIar, the prong coIIar doesnt give any advantages unIess the dog has too much energy, and I know severaI dogs who have way too much pain toIerance for this crap, rehab pitbuIIs often just dont give any fucks.

@David Johnson then you don't deal with many types of dogs. Any dog who believes it has the freedom to do as it wishes will without hesitation resist. A slip lead chokes when the dog refuses to obey even from the snap corrections. A bite on the neck which is simulated by the prongs acts like a parent biting the nape of the dogs neck which cause them to pause out of a reaction they have from birth.

Slip lead shouldn't be used to pull, but, I appreciate the problem being many owners don't know how to apply a slip lead correction,...but same can be said of prong, and the 'damage' of bad use of prong by a novice, is way worse than bad use of a slip lead. Handler/owner training is key.

Maybe put part 2 in the description? I'm not about to go and hunt that down. Especially cause the average person understands what the point of this is anyways so it isnt worth it.

@Lily Snape if used correctly. (Big if) the slip lead goes high on neck and very very little pressure is used and it's typically only used for a couple of training sessions. Every training aid has a time and place and can be very effective on the right dog used correctly. Problem is most people don't use tool correctly and that's why they become illegal or get a wrap. Take the retractable leash, 99% of people use them wrong and they are technically Illegal here in Pennsylvania USA. The reason they are illegal is "must maintain positive control of dog" is the law.

That alone makes me not take anything this dude takes seriously. If you need to rely on punishment to get a dog to obey you, you're a shit trainer.

My mom is a professional puppy trainer too. Her method is to use a proper collar (not too soft, fitted to the dog, wider so it reduces punctual pressure onto the sensitive neck), a regular leash and positive encouragement for the puppy. She recommends to use gently, steady pulls (no tugging or responsive pulls to the puppy fighting it, keep a steady hand and stand your position) and a lot of positive, energetic energy to call your puppy. Provide benefits for the dog as soon as it comes to you. (can be a little snack, a toy, or pets) Train your puppy to learn that being with you is the nicest thing ever, more interesting than being with other people or other dogs and NEVER use items such as prongs, brute force, anger or a stressed attitude to force your dog to obey. Teach your puppy that the best place is right next to you. Prongs are for people with controll issues. If the dog doesn't want to be with you, you should change something about YOUR attitude.

this man sounds like someone who learned how to train dogs from a single source written back in the 80's and has done very little up date his knowledge base on how to train dogs.

@@Relentlesscopez psst I have been training dogs for over 10 years worked a few behaviorists that now implement some of my ideas when working with certain types of reactive dogs. And yes since I have spent many nights and many reading old books on the subject of dog training along with their more modern counter parts. I have pretty good idea about what I'm talking about. I just cut toes with a trainer similar to this individual because he couldn't get passed the out dated notion of dominance theory. And was in it for the money not the family or the dogs.

Ya dominance theory completely ignores the neoteny of dogs and treats them like wolves. Most trainers I’ve worked with operate very differently from this guy and get just as good of results from what I’ve seen.

They are 2 completely different uses. A prong collar at a vets office, which is already high stress for the animal, is more likely to hurt them and harder to get on a fractious animal. If used properly prong collars aren’t that bad. But it’s those people that keep a prong collar on at all times or the ability for the owner to yank on the leash and cause serious harm that has many people against them.

So basically you, as a "professional dog trainer who actually knows what you're doing", recommends using pain to break your dog's will as quickly as possible because you don't have the patience or knowledge to actually train it in a meaningful way. Gotcha.

The only trainer I’ve seen online that loves slip leads was Ceaar Millan, and he’s not positive only. For my puppy, the only advice I’ve gotten is to use a harness. I used to think the leash pop was great, then I got a dog and can’t imagine ever doing that to him. He’ll be a wonderful happy dog :)

For those who can’t find the second part where he demonstrates the prong collar. The prong collar is a training tool used to teach dogs not to pull because when they do pull it gives them a slight pinch, but no actual harm. Some are just very dramatic. The collar is not to be worn at all time just for walks and sometimes when bringing the dog to a trainer if it gets distracted or chases after every little thing.

Now I’m not going to give you any hate but I’m going to say that this doesn’t hurt the dog one bit and that after a short times it’s no longer of use because it’s been used correctly and the dog has been properly leash trained. I only had to use the collar for a few weeks before I could walk my dog freely. Now I’m not saying this method is for everyone but my dog was physically hurting me with his pulling even if it wasn’t his fault/ he didn’t mean it. I just wanted to take him onto walk and if this was an abusive item it wouldn’t be sold (for example to shock collar which actually is an abusive training tool that I’ve never seen sold in stores) I can prove this because when used correctly it leaves no marks or cuts off circulation in the dogs neck.

It may have got you the results you wanted but I’m sorry, it’s still a cruel and lazy way to teach a dog behaviour. Positive reinforcement takes longer but the results are better, if you don’t think you can do that then go to an actual dog trainer.

@@jarrethandford893 Prong collars don’t hurt dogs. That’s a misconception. Same with shock collars. Think of it like when you clap. It only gains their attention. Using a slip or harness can actually choke your dog. It’s best to just find ways of communicating where you’re not pulling on your dog. But these collars are for training purposes. Not all time use. Once communication is set you’re fine to take them off. I’d recommend this over chocking an animal any-day.

I was only saving you time and hoping that with new information you’d stop the abuse of choking dogs when they’re distracted. You wouldn’t say that when a cat grabs her kittens it hurts them even though she’s using her teeth. When dogs play they use teeth. A rounded prong that isn’t sharp doesn’t hurt a dog. But you choking them does.

I love the way this guy feels like he is the CRAP for using semi aggressive to aggressive means to train dogs, while bashing positive trainers who get much better, and much more positive results. Like you didn't have to talk crap about positive trainers but he just had to put himself above them huh, god 😭😭🤣🤣🤣 This is why I'd rather have a positive trainers. It's not about them and their ego. It's about the dog being trained without aggressive, harsh, or even slightly painful means.

You don’t think that you’re doing the exact same thing? Nah right? He’s the only one acting superior and like he is the one that knows everything? Not you…never. People that speak in absolutes about training tools are ridiculous. Slip leads have their place. Prongs have their place. Harnesses have a place…as seat belts. 😂 Everyone participates in some kind of force against their dogs while training. Abusive people will ruin a dog regardless of the collar they use, and nice people will wind up with a nice dog. Any given dog may do better with either collar. Hence, we can’t be TOO formulaic.

​@thopkins22 Sure if a dog has agressive tendencies I'll agree you should step up what you use in response. Beyond that you should use as minimal force as you can. But that involves actually putting time and energy into your dog and not just signing a check.

All I have to say is trainers have to stop telling owners to put those on their arms. You will not feel the same pain. Put them on to your neck and then tell me those prong collars don't hurt

I put my dog's prong around my neck and it didn't hurt. Just a little cold at first lol

I had to get a prong/pincher collar for my first dog for that exact reason. He was malamute/shepherd and had a serious pulling/tugging issue on leash. Once I got the prong collar, my girlfriend and I took him for a walk and he lasted maybe 10 seconds before he just stopped pulling completely. Then, once he realized that he was doing what we wanted, he RARELY ever had an issue. I'd talk him on 1-2 hour hikes a couple times per week for nearly 13 years. It totally changed how he acted because I was able to instantly regain his focus when he was distracted. Our pit bull acted similarly, but even the prong collar wasn't enough. His neck was also about 4 inches bigger around and he weighed around 115 pounds. He was a little brick shithouse that NOBODY could stop 😆

If they have a pulling issue redirect their focus some all the way that’s what I do and it works completely fine without have to use those heinous objects

my dog is dog aggressive. before i used the pinch collar she pull me and lung ect she even blew a blood vessel in my eye by whipping me around. and after the collar she listens more and more in line when shes near other dogs. I got her trained by a police officer that works with k9s too

Calling oneself a professional and using pain or risky items openly condemned for training is not professionalism. To be a professional, you work with ethics. A ball chucker can be abused too. But calling it a literal torture device seems a bit much. Plenty of well meaning but ignorant people condemn all sorts of things that are misunderstood or misused. Honestly the most abusive tool in most pet stores for dogs is the aisles of harnesses. Or the aisles of antlers and bones just cracking pet teeth daily.

Not all dogs are the same. Can't use the same thing on all dogs. Some dogs are fast learners others not. You have to determine what you need

head collar works just as well prong collars are KNOWN to slip off the dog and are used when someone cant actualy control their dog

Great demonstration. But it's best to give them a pop with both prong and slip collar.

As dog walker I use slip leads. They are one size fit all solution. You can walk a Great Dane or a Maltese with same leash. Easy to get on and off. You can even convert them into a harness or halti. Pinch collars are great tool if sized and used correctly. I’ve seen to many dogs slip out and breakout their pinch collars. Though pinch collars are easier on the neck.

Prong collars shouldn’t be loose and even a properly fitted one should have a safety clip in case it comes undone. I use a herm sprenger neck tech martingale collar and never have to worry about this anymore

I feel like I'm in the wrong side of yt-

I use a Halti/gentle leader only works with medium to large dogs with longer noses. You still have to train them with it, but its like leading a horse. They can feel the leash starting to move in a direction so they will turn that way with little to no pressure. If you have ever lead a horse or seen someone lead a horse with a halter (not bridle, no bit in a halter) its very relaxed all of it.

I got that for my guy! It worked better than a collar and eventually he even stopped pawing at it so much. He still tried to fight it at times. At the time it was a hastey switch from a collar because he was making my wrists ache so the but of pressure i had to use with that tool was still too much. I've ended up relying on the prong collar more since it doesnt anything out of my wrists, especially since he was still only half his size at that point and just getting stronger. He's not on leash much aside from walks so that's when we use it. He seldom needs any corrections but I like to have in on him just in case as a way to get his attention promptly since he still has a bit of dog reactivity that we still haven't fully worked through. He does great if I can snap him out of fixating immediately by turning him away or getting him to look at me. I'd use food but he's not a foodie, his tummy issues had him spoiled on boiled chicken so even that won't work anymore 🥲 The prong and gentle leader have honestly saved my wrists so much pain with this dog lol

Yes definitely gentle leader. You shouldn't be punishing your dog for wanting to sniff things just as you shouldn't be treating your dog every time they are doing what they should always be doing.

When introducing the slip collar to the dog, you have to help him understand what you want by food luring as you apply pressure. I’m a big fan on both tools

@Kate Mohr In the way that they can cause physical harm to a dog even when used “properly”. If you have a problem with your dog pulling, you train it positively. A quick fix is getting a harness with a handle on it, that way you can get much more control of the dog with no discomfort.

I use prongs. I also use slip leads. What your experiment isn't showing here is that slip leads reduce airflow.

I like how he said any prong collar. Remember there are better and expensive options but there are also budget option that work perfectly if you are taking care of the dog.

Simple solution: first learn about dog's natural behaviour, then teach them in a correct way depending an the first step. Result: you never will (have to) pull in a dog to follow you! Loving pets means to know about them instead of thinking how humanlike you can train them!

I hate when people say using those are “abuse”. Especially when they’ve never had a dog that’s as strong, or stronger than they are. Prong collars used correctly do not hurt the animal at all, & it doesn’t take them more than a few pulls to figure out that they can’t do that anymore. One of, if not the fastest way to see some results for most people. Love your work. Always learning something new.

Key word is used correctly though most people suck with them and never graduate out of it with their dog. Personally I don’t like when owners use them for that exact reason. Considering how many trainers I see use it as a crutch they probably shouldn’t use it either.

If you need a prong collar to simply teach a dog how to walk properly, you shouldn't be teaching a dog anything, especially not the advanced training that a k9 needs.

I use a prong collar for my dog. He has never hurt himself with wearing, and it helps when I walk him as he is large and could injure me if he decided to bolt. My dog is a 130lb chocolate lab.

i’m a force free dog owner and i can promise you we don’t ever use slip leads. they’re so thin and they hurt. i only use a wide loose one i keep in the car if i forgot my collar or leash and i don’t use it for corrections, no pressure on it. just to obey the leash law.

A martingale, which is also called a ‘half choke’ which is like the prong but without the prongs, is better than either of these options in the hands of a novice trainer/pet owner as it is effective but most of all, safe if fitted correctly.

I agree, it’s better to learn on. I used one for many years. I only went to a prong when I had a dog who completely ignored the martingale.

When you use a slip lead you're supposed to gently but firmly snap the leash, not continually pull on their neck.

Same with prong. The difference is if the dog decides to pull or starts to get reactive, the snap from the slip doesn't do anything. Slips work for some dogs, but not all.

Dog trainers are constantly throwing shade at eachother

Why don’t we just teach animals who didn’t choose to be our pets instead of scare and hurt them into submission? I have two large dogs, both extremely well trained in casual and tricks. Never had I needed to hurt or scare them. They respect me nonetheless 🤷‍♂️

Even properly fitted prong collars dig into the sensitive skin around the neck, risking severe damage to the thyroid, esophagus and trachea. my dog has scars around its neck from a prong collar by the previous owner and plus she nearly died cuz of it from severe infection in her trachea since one of the spikes pierced into her throat.

This sucks where they are illegal 😒
