Part 1 - Shammi Kapoor remembers "His Voice" Rafi Sahab on his Death Anniversary in Mumbai
30th Death Anniversary of legendary Mohammed Rafi, lovingly called Rafi Sahab or Rafi Sb. Legendary Shammi Kapoor recalled how he got the shock of his life when somebody told hi that he has lost his voice. He didn't realise it initially that it was the news about demise of Rafi Sahab, his singing voice on screen.
Shahid Rafi launched an Academy on 31st July, 2010, the 30th death anniversary of his father, the legendary singer Mohammed Rafi. Many living legends and celebrities from the Hindi film industry turned up at the venue to pay their glowing tributes to Rafi Sahab and support Shahid Rafi in his endeavour to create an Academy for talented children in singing and music. A few of the celebrities graced the event included Shammi Kapoor, Ravi, Naqsh Lyallpuri, Ameen Sayani, Pyarelal, Anandji, Sanjay Khan, Dara Singh, Chandrasekhar, Sudha Malhotra, Ravindra Jain, Rakesh Roshan, Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Nitin Mukesh, Mohnish Mukesh, Amit Kumar, Bappi Lahiri, Bharat Shah, Hassan Kamaal, Udit Narayan, Shabbir Kumar, Adnan Sami Khan, Javed Jaffri, Rajil Sayani, Ashok Shekhar among others.
It was truly an emotional moment for the children of Mohammed Rafi and their families when the living legends and celebrities came one after another on stage and shared their memories with the august gathering and media. All of them shared their wonderful memories and remembered Rafi Sahab as a soft spoken, gentle but also with a good sense of humour.
Mohammed Rafi sang many superhit songs for Shammi Kapoor, mainly composed by Shankar Jaikishen & O.P.Nayyar. Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Junglee, Kashmir Ki Kali are some of the great musicals in which Rafi Sahab sang many songs for the Dancing Superstar. Shammi Kapoor Sahab said he was incomplete without Rafi. He remembered the day when somebody called him and said "Shammi Sahab aapki aawaaz chali gai". He said "kya bakwaas kar rahe ho, main to acchha khaasa bol raha hu aur kal raat ko Mataji ke bhajan bhi gaye" to which the person said "Rafi Sahab nahi rahe". This struck him like a lightening bolt, "wakai meri aawaaz chali gai".
Jeetendra Sahab said when Rafi Sahab came to know that he is going through financial difficulties for his film 'Deedar-e-Yaar', he waived off his fees for singing in the film. Rakesh Roshan said though Rafi Sahab sang a few songs for him, he had mammoth work with his father, the late Roshan Sahab and his younger brother Rajesh Roshan.
The Mohammed Rafi Academy consists of Shahid Rafi (Chairman), Raju Naushad (Secretary), Firdaus Rafi (Treasurer), Javed Shakeel (Jt. Secretary) and Committee Members Kaka J.P., Andalib Sultanpuri, Ruhan Kapoor, H.Makhijani, Manek Premchand, Shirish Kulkarni, Raashid Zaffar & Creativo Camaal.

Shammi Kapoor ji has credited his success to Rafi Sahab, which is absolutely true but to express it is his greatness. I have seen/listened the interview of other actors like dev anand whose success was also incomplete without rafi sahab, but they were too ungrateful to express the importance of Rafi sahab in their success.

People should learn from Rafi Sahab - giving throughout life is more important than only paying last respect after death, getting one Bharat Ratna is less important than what Rafi Sahab gets daily ie thousands of duas good wishes and genuine hearts everyday, doing good for humanity universally more than a single nation. There is not a single second in the world when his voice is not booming somewhere. You name it Rafi Sahab is giving happiness in cars buses trucks trains kitchens lounges bedrooms parks shops malls restaurants social functions radios TVs etc etc. No Bharat Ratna recipient can achieve that. He has lived in past people's hearts, is living in present people's hearts, and will carry on living in future people's hearts, a feat that only god achieves. Unlike others who insist they are the best, Rafi Sahab never boasted, he let people judge him themselve by his humble actions. In an age when most households had colour VCRs and when Rafi was also a household name, it's a shame none of his sons or even mediawallas bothered to document his concerts or recordings or his daily life in maybe eastman-colour. Starting Rafi Acedamy was a feat and good appreciation but real test will be how it operates and how it's managed and polished over the years. If corruption beimaani dhoka similar to that which has crept into other acedemies is allowed to bring shame than it won't be worth it.
Mohammad Rafi Sahab was the gift of God and n he is the Angel marrcyful and kind hearted nature person and nobody can compare with him n Shammi Kapoor without Mohammad Rafi is nothing ❤ and adore you too much 🙏🙌

Insha-Allah! The sun of Muhammad Rafi will shine in the sky up to the last day of this world’s existence. It makes no difference whether an academy in the name of M. Rafi to be established or not. I think, this effort is nothing but a publicity gimmick. Everyone knows, “some people are always engaged in finding ways to popularize themselves by the use of names of legendary figures”.

@kingrapid So in your narrow mind, being present at such event is the ONLY way one can show respect?? Is it obligatory to attend every function of someone you consider guruji?? It is sheer narrow mindedness to even think of such a stupid point and connect guruji as reason for being present at a function. Stop your divide and rule tactics, learn to appreciate what one gives, NOT what one doesn't give! Don't judge Sonu (or anyone else including your parents, family, friends, relatives, teachers, neighbours, etc) by what he (or they) have done or what he (or they) haven't done. Appreciate what he (or they) have given/contributed to others without asking for anything in return. Rafi Sahab always gave his SOUL to others through songs, accepted with gratitude whatever others (including producers) gave him, without discrimination or even questioning (like you do) why is it less or even not paid or not present. Sonu or Sanu or Shabbir or Sailendra their presence or no presence is irrelevant whether they consider Rafi as guru or inspiration.

THE OPENING OF THE RAFI SAHAB ACADEMY. Not the Bharat Ratna or a funeral. So yes I stand by the fact that Sonu Nigam SHOULD have been at the event. “Live up to your words and prove your love for him and him being ur guru Oh Sonu ji... “but maybe his schedule was too busy. And lastly since when did u become a spokesman for Sonu Nigam? As A FAN AND HUMAN BEING I AM ENTITLED TO MY OPINION. If u don’t like it u can always ignore and carry on... peace

WHY is it necessary for you to have particular named person/s to attend this ceremony just because they have a connection? I didn't attend doesnot mean i don't respect. Of all the 100s of people you are the only one missing (or having a grudge against) Sonu's presence and to question his absence. Don't make assumptions and start making bullshit claims about guruji or spokesperson or whatever comes to your clouded mind. Sonu's or anyone else's schedules is none of my or your business. Whoever recorded/uploaded these parts should be ashamed of themselves. Seriously even in 1980s simple weddings were covered in high quality colour videos and here we are in 2010 recording/posting in 240P HORRIBLE 3rd class quality where you have to GUESS who is who. Is this how you project Rafi Sahabs deeds??? SHAME SHAME SHAME
