[Part 1] Easiest Beginner iPad Procreate Portrait Tutorial Ever!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

UPDATE - PART 2 is here!!! • [Part 2] Easiest Begin...
Hi everyone!
Just wanted to make a really simple tutorial for beginners to get started with portrait painting on Procreate. If you do not have facetune you can always just skip that part and go straight into tracing at 4:45
DISCLAIMER - for those of you who don’t watch the entire video and kept insisting that it’s copying/cheating/ fraud etc without listening to my explanation I feel compelled to explain again. In a painting process there’s a couple of stages -
1. Getting familiar with the software is Procreate
2. Drawing
3. Grayscale
4. Color
5. Brushwork
6. Finishing
this method involves tracing and color picking which takes away the learning process of drawing, grayscale and color stages so that you can focus on learning the software, brushwork and finishing. It shouldn’t be used as a crutch forever but a good way to get started and learn from this process. If you are interested in learning the hard way you can watch my other tutorials not labeled as beginner. Leaving negative comments would discourage other artists wanting to start from zero. I will not be replying any negative comments. Don’t wanna keep repeating and explaining myself.
Enjoy the tutorial today!
Please credit me if you use my brushes or color palettes!
Beginners, pls watch the Procreate basic series if you're new to procreate.

I personally don't think tracing is "cheating" because from my point of view, it's like when they teach you the alphabet in school. First you trace the letters and then slowly you learn to do it yourself. Think of it that way ** EXCEPT WHEN YOU PASS IT OFF AS YOUR OWN THAT IS CHEATING **

the difference there is there are only 26 letters in the english alphabet... there are an infinite number of faces or references or skintones or lighting... you cant trace a face 100x then onthe 101st one you do it without the tracing...

  • @Monokm

@@erljohnbersamin2970 but its not just the face. You can break the face down into the eyes, mouth, nose, view point, and shading and once youve practiced them enough you should be good to start practicing without em. So really you are only tracing 5 key points (maybe more maybe less) unlike the 100 you claim. Sure theres all kinds of faces and shapes but you only need the essentials to go out there and try on your own (even if it looks bad). Quit discouraging people.

@@Monokm I really just think this video promotes a "quick" way to learn to draw, instead of having to learn things such as anatomy, prespective, color theory, etc, this video tells you to go and trace the photo and colorpick the colors, and that will pretty much lead you nowhere, because there's no quick way to learn art, you need to practice every day, and study like hell. art isnt easy like this video is portraying..

I think a lot of you are missing the point. This is not a "Learn how to draw" tutorial. This is a "Learn how to use Procreate" tutorial. Tracing is just to make the overall project simpler. The main point is to get more familiar with procreate features such as various palettes and brushes. Also doing it this way lets you get more comfortable with drawing on a tablet which is very different. I'm a designer - but I don't draw at all. This tutorial is perfect for helping me get more comfortable with procreate and eventually using it as an app to sketch and eventually learn to draw.

It is good for procreate learning, but it is definetly not a portait tutorial as mention in title. Just an other clickbait. I was hoping to understand more about portraits. But this is just someone telling us how they study portait instead of teaching us how to actually make one. This kind of video is my daily drawing study. Good things about color, values and else.

Olive Oil Yeah, the art community is super toxic. People with this sort of black and white view of tracing can be found all over Twitter, DeviantArt, Tumblr, etc. It’s funny, because I most commonly find that these people have never received any sort of formal training or drawn professionally. Art theft is certainly an issue when art is actually being stolen and profited off of, but nowadays I’m finding more often than not, people are being vilified for doing something that is essentially studying.

I know some artists call this an incorrect way to learn but personally for me, I’ve grown a lot from doing this instead of just reading the same rules over and over again but failing to apply those to my art work. Through this way, I can see the correct values and ways to structure the anatomy. It’s given me more results in a few months than I did studying for a year! So I was super happy to see you do this tutorial! Though it’s not for everyone as we all learn in different ways 😁

@@solveigfrank Tracing is ok if you are a beginner, you slowly learn proportions and values. But this is helpful only as a beginner, after that you can pass to a real-life copy who is a lot more difficult but will teach you more. Also, this tutorial is literally copying the same colours it isn't even teaching you how to create your values etc, for example, if you want to increase the difficulties and learn more about the light you could use different colours and increase the contrast. copyng and tracing are fine if you are a beginner but doing this is on a computer make it toooooo much easy, that is why is better to trace and copy from a picture and using real colors, that will teach you more than doing this.

Thinking I was “cheating” by tracing has kept me from drawing and even learning for many years. I felt guilty and like I was betraying an entire community, but I think people should understand that part of learning is tracing and color sapling like this. It teaches you aspects of drawing in an easier way. This helped be patient with myself enough to begin to learn. Thank you so much for this tutorial!

You shouldn't feel guilty, I don't understand why people are getting so mad about it. It's a great way to learn and as a beginner I'm also doing it. Even if you have used 'tracing', that doesn't mean that is super easy to draw something, it still takes time and effort and you need to have some kind of skills to make it look good.

I totally understand. I had NO art training or experience 15 yrs ago. I found that recreating a picture I loved, often tracing for certain shapes, helped me learn so much. Now I can do things on my own, but for a few months, I learned by recreating other art. And as someone above said, depending on the sketch, it is NOT easy to truly recreate an amazing drawing.

IAMSOUND99 but you also learn from it, for example I could NEVER find a color on the color-wheel for skin that looked natural, but once I tried copying some colors from portraits or other paintings I began to recognize how skin colors look and what colors to blend together. I also started to recognize proper proportions by tracing various faces and bodies and beginning to notice the patterns. I also learned where the shadows would be depending on where the light is. For example, in nearly every portrait I traced, their was a shadow on the neck. Before the tracing, I’d never realized that chins or lips would create shadows or that eyelashes are curled downwards and then upwards rather than extrude straight from the eyelid. There are a lot of other patterns I’ve learned, such as how the hair should fall depending on the position of the face and so on.

I think this is a really important video for many beginner artists and even those wanting to venture into semi-realism art. So many people say that using references and stuff is cheating but it really isn’t, you SHOULD be using references every chance you get when you’re studying art, it’s the best way to learn the correct proportions, shading, and shapes of body parts and features. You could “draw off your imagination” but 9/10 that really doesn’t get you anywhere because you don’t have the basics down to venture off from. Build your basics first through references, tracing, because over time once you have that down you can use your imagination to create visually pleasing art and it just becomes easier to draw anything once you’ve studied light sources, shading, and basic body features! 💞💞 it’s the key to progressing in your art, especially if you feel like you haven’t improved by much over the years or you want to polish your technique.

Of course no one should to shame another for tracing, but it's important for beginners to know that this exercise just practice the brushstroke (just like the girl say in 13:10). No drawing, no anatomy, no color or values are developed here. So comparing with tracing the alphabet it's a mistake for me: you just can learn the letters tracing them, but you can learn brushstroke with a different, more enriching exercise.

This is a tutorial for beginners who need to figure out procreate before they can start doing their own artwork. I think this is a great way to get comfortable with the app. Even for me as an art student, I had some trouble with the app in the beginning, not knowing how to use the brushes the best way possible. But if you use this technique in the beginning it helps you figure out how to use the brushes and figuring out your preferences. Obviously after a while you need to graduate into making your own art, using a reference picture as just a reference picture and slowly learning to use your eyes and even the grid feature instead of tracing. And honestly, especially if it’s from a reference picture, sometimes tracing the skeleton just saves time to get to the same starting point faster. From there you can change the colors, values, etc... I personally like changing the color palette of reference pictures but I’ll start with a trace. Sometimes I’ll trace my own art if I want to change something or make a variation. Although when drawing on paper, it’s better to learn how to draw from your eyes, with digital art I feel like it’s very different as you can’t use the same techniques between the two platforms.

I always want to try drawing things like this, it’s always my dream ever since i was a kid but i always thought it would be really hard and complicated to do so i never try it 😂 I’ve bought the ipad, also the apple pencil, and install the app as well early this year in January I mainly use the ipad for writing down notes in school, watching netflix or just playing games. recently I’ve seen a lot of talented people, doing this kind of drawing all over my instagram, so I thought wanna try it for myself too. l’ve seen a lot of videos in KZread but they just not what I needed they just told me how to use Procreate like the basic stuff, how to duplicate, change the brush settings, upload your works, etc Now I’ve found your channel, I will do my best. thank you so much for the video 💜

I used to do traditional art. Was never really good at it or anything, I’m a total beginner. The last time I held a pencil was like 6 years. I stopped drawing because things got busy with uni. Graduated 2 years ago, I’m working now. I always had a passion for drawing and I never really lost it. I just didn’t have time to do it. Been working from home for a few months now bc of the pandemic and I’ve always thought, maybe I should get back to drawing since I’m home all day. I decided to get an iPad and try drawing again. This time I want to try digital art. This is a very helpful guide and it certainly made want to draw even more. Thank you.

Negative comments about her, doing it a certain way differs from how “experienced” artists do it, should be kept to a minimum. This is art. Art is supposed to be different. How one person does it and how another, should vary. There shouldn’t be so many “rules” or “right way” to create art. It kinda beats the whole purpose of “being creative” if we’re all supposed to follow the same shit. Everyone learns/does things differently. Just appreciate that she took the time to even record this and provide a lot of people with a free brush pack.

I am 13 and still a beginner. I don’t think tracing is necessarily bad. If you are training yourself, tracing is like training wheels. You have to understand what you are attempting to draw. Though, I don’t think you should share traces art as your own original piece. I’ve had friends who claim art as their won when it is clearly traced. If i ever trace I make sure I give credit. I mostly learned drawing from eye. I’m still learning. My strength is drawing portraits, and it does take a lot of practice and patience. I used to trace my reference images to understand proportions. Sooo yeah. Tracing isn’t bad if you are using it to learn or for personal use

Peacheyz in my opinion, as long as they don’t claim the artwork as their own and they trace it for the sake of practicing, its probably acceptable, since stealing would mean that they promote it and claim it as their own art. Everyone starts from zero. For example, I learnt to draw by tracing at first, then gradually I could manage on my own. Aaand you’re extremely right, stealing is really bad! But in this case, I believe she said tracing is alright because we’re using it as practice. =) Just don’t go flexing it online since people will say you’re stealing. x.x
