Part 1: CSM TENSION + Sock Log: How I figure out my optimal tension, plus my sock log
I decided to use some yarn I haven't used in forever which means I needed to determine what tension to use, so this is how I do that. I also go over my sock log and show how to count rows per inch. It's a 2 parter because I forgot to put my phone on do not disturb and I got a phone call oops! I also touch very very lightly on my foot row calculating worksheet but that's a whole nother kettle of fish, and I'm not entirely happy with it so I didn't go into it very much at all. That would need to be it's own video.
I'm kind of all over the place, I apologize! I don't think I ever explicitly said this so, I tighten the tension until the stitches don't fall down on the cylinder quickly. Then I loosen it 1 click and that's my optimal tension for that yarn.
As always: THIS IS WHAT WORKS FOR ME. I like knitting my socks as tight as I can. You may not like as tight a tension as this, or find a better way to track your tension. To each their own! (Please do not contact me about how I'm doing it all wrong.)
You can download my sock log file (in PDF or Excel) as well as foot row calculator from my blog post here. Any future files will also be added to this page:

This might be an older video but it helped me tremendously! I’ve made lots of socks and always guessed at tension. I had no idea such as your counting clocks! Yeah! And thank you!
Hello, I really appreciate this video. It has helped me a lot.

Thank you!
Thank you for showing us your sock log. I'm a newbie and this will definitely help me! I was able to save the PDF file, but the Excel version you linked wasn't the sock log. It was the foot row sizing chart. I would love an Excel version to tweak. Thanks again!

Sorry for the delay, Deb. You can get a handmade acrylic handle from Celeste Angello. She is in the fb group "Circular Sock Machine Knitters 2.0". She doesn't have a storefront, but you can find her there.
Will you share your tension sheet please
