Part 1 BMW N54 6spd Transmission Removal

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video, we do what it takes to remove everything in order to get access to the clutch assembly. This includes the under car cowling, exhaust, driveshaft, and of course the transmission. There are tips and tricks, so watch all the way through! Once we remove that, all sub parts of Part 1 videos will have information regarding things you can do while the transmission is out!
In fact, at the end of the video, I go through detail on each of the bolts that hold the transmission to the engine block and the torx sizes required to get them out. So there is no guessing on what tools you need to access those hard-to-reach bolts.

Thanks for the vid - short, sharp and informative. Maybe you'll cover it in a later vid, but the one question in the back of my mind is how the heck are you gonna get that top bolt back in and torqued to spec?

Man I’m doing this as we speak, and it absolutely sucks. I was fairly certain I got the last top housing bolt out but can’t separate the housing from the block.

First off, love the sticker extra points for your wardrobe and makeup team! Had a "Shop Science" moment when I saw all those socket extensions together: If you have multiple extensions of different sizes, is it better to have the shorter ones closer to the driver or the bolt? For that sort of long range fishing, I would imagine having the shorter ones closer to the driver would be optimal. Probably makes 0.0002% difference. I'm going to go play with socket extensions now.

Thanks man! IMHO The change is in the arc, shorter extensions close to the socket head lend for more droop at the far end as opposed to the other way around. You gotta just play with it to find your best solution!

Great n54 series -- subbed! My 07 n54 (67k mi) clutch just started slipping around 450ftlb tq (stage 2+ MHD, e30) -- planning to reach around 600ftlbs eventually. Any clutch/flywheel recommendations? Should I stay with Dual Mass? Or go SMF? It's my daily... Appreciate any recommendations!

Oh i love the reacharound! If you go SMFW, definitely get yourself a sprung clutch. more comfy. I've also had good experience with clutchmasters stage 3 stuff specifically. Take a quick look at my E30 or E36 N54 integrators guides for an in depth guide on the applicable N54 flywheels and appropriate clutches to use, up to the 600ftlb range you're interested in.

Do you have any idea how much friction there is between the 2 dowel pins on the trans and the engine block? Not to mention the splines on the trans input shaft to clutch. It’s a lot. A lot of work to separate them. Like with 2 concurrent pry bars to separate. It’s smart to know what you’re up against - the dynamics of the system. I understand that quite well. If I felt you absolutely had to put a jack under the trans, I would have suggested it
