Apple trees require attention each year to maintain the best fruit production. Yearly pruning and fertilizing help the tree focus its nutrient supply on producing a manageable number of flavorful fruits without blemishes. Apple trees use most nutrients moderately, but they're heavy users of potassium and calcium. Potassium and calcium can be applied each year, but other nutrients should only be applied when you notice a deficiency.
