Parris Island Drill Instructor Earns Saves a Recruit's Life
Credit: Lance Cpl. Joseph Jacob | Date Taken: 07/26/2017
U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Quaylain D. Brown currently serves as a drill instructor with India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. On July 26, 2017, Brown received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his part in the saving the life of a recruit. While consuming food on July 24, 2017, a recruit began choking on his food, Brown saw the recruit struggling to breath and performed the Heimlich Maneuver to clear the blockage in his throat, allowing the recruit to recover. Brown joined the Marine Corps in 2011. “I wanted to become a drill instructor because I always wanted to be involved directly and influence the future of the Marines Corps,” said Brown, a 29-year-old native of Abbeville, La. “What better way to do that than to become a drill instructor.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 19,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 49 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. Obviously Doctor, you don't personally know any DI's.They are some of the smartest, highly educated Marines.Ask the ones I knew in 1982,Ssgt Harris,Sgt.Johnson,Sgt. Watkins, and Sgt.Nichols.Even to this day exactly 40 years since first meeting them I still remember their names and faces. If it weren't for them I wouldn't be anywhere the man I am today.I don't think they know fully the thousands of lives they have had a positively profound influence in their lives.Thank you Sgt Harris,Sgt Johnson,Sgt Watkins, and Sgt.Nichols!

I saw this happen a few times in the chow hall. One of the recruits in my platoon was choking. He was alright but we formed up outside and senior DI goes “I know I said to eat fast, but goddamn!”
@therealsapdad1942
11 ай бұрын
He then proceeded to smoke the whole platoon because the recruit almost died without permission, correct? 😂
He was probably yelling at the poor kid to eat faster before that lmao
“Heimlich maneuver” yeah right more like a knife hand to the chest for choking without permission😂
You can tell this drill instructor is passionate by the way his eyes look.
Drill Instructors don't get any better than this Sergeant. OORAH,MARINE!

N2 Jacob oh Werd bro, you know him then?
I can imagine the conversation he had with the recruit after saving him DI: "You gonna survive there, freakin' you-hoo?" Recruit: " Yes, sir". DI: "Good. You're gonna report straight to my quarterdeck after the Corpsman accesses you, you understand that".
I’m not a marine or in any other branch but I truly admire every single one of you. A lot of the people in these comments are probably marines so I just wanna say thank you for all you do
I've seen Navy LTs get the same award for helping to coordinate promotion ceremonies. This Marine deserves something higher than the NAM or Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Glad he got recognized, but he deserves more than saving someone's life.
Choking because he got counted down. He had 20 seconds to finish his chow. 20, 19,18,17,5,4,3,2,1
That arm swing by the guide 13 seconds in is killing me right now.
We all know DI said “STOP CHOKING you NASTY THING AAAAAAAAAAAAH” and the recruit yelled “aye sir” and was perfectly fine after that
I can see the DI saying: Who gave you permission to choke Recruit?!
That recruit definitely spent the rest of the day getting it’d.
The recruit has failed to learn the valuable skill of inhaling chow.
That drill instructor sounds like he yells at people everyday

Great job for saving the recruit life 💪💯🇺🇲🇺🇲👍
That’s actually kind of annoying, for that medal, you’re supposed to put yourself in harm’s way and risk your own life saving a life in a non-combat zone. One of my Marines fell of the side of a mountain on a hike and got caught on a sideways tree and fractured his ankle. I had a Marine grab my ankle and someone onto his, hanging off a big cliff to reach down and save the other Marine and that still wasn’t worthy of the medal... No disrespect to the DI, what he did is nothing to criticize, but getting this award is questionable.

@@itsAmeOFP Oh, I don't know about that. True, the Army, and to a lesser extent the Navy, but especially the Air Force just gives medals away. But I spent 18 years in the air wings, and 2 years as a Drill Instructor. Got a Good Conduct Medal. That's it. Ran an Avionics shop "perfectly" for 30 days, They gave a NAM to the NCOIC for that. But he was on leave that 30 days, I was running it. I got an 8 on Initial Drill as a Drill Instructor, the one time I was allowed to compete. I'm guessing that a 4 or less was the normal first time score, because everyone was telling me to try to get at least a 4. Every platoon I trained took the range, with NO unq's, and the highest percentage of Experts. Nothing. I did get a Meritorious Mast for an Honor Platoon though. Back to the Wing. Inspector General is coming to inspect the squadron, I volunteered for the drill platoon and the junk on the bunk inspections. The inspection went off with minor discrepancies, almost none, and the drill platoon performed flawlessly, not only when I put them through a card, but when they picked random Marines from the platoon also. The drill platoon got a score of Noteworthy. NO discrepancies. Not even a thank you. Desert Storm, went up on one of the flights, KC-130, pilot asked me to have a look at his radar indicator. So I'm sitting in the pilot's seat, when I notice that the HSI is showing and increasing left bank. Before it reached a point that control could not be restored, I took the controls and leveled the aircraft, preventing it from crashing and saving everyone on board, including me. Easy to see why I didn't get anything for that one though. The pilot and co-pilot would both have to admit that they both FUCKED UP the positive flight control changeover. And finally, didn't get any "end of tour" award when I retired. So don't say they give shit away in the Wing because they don't. Not even when you actually do something.

I just love Marines.
Not going to lie had a guy at recruit training choke when he was eating chow. He gave the hand and arm signal to drill instructor Sargent R. ( i don't want to put his name for the sake of privacy) I just remember him going behind him with a knife hand and smacked the guy in the back so fast. The first this the guy said was RECEIVE SIR. I almost died trying not to laugh. Sargent R was always the the drill instructor I respected the most. I hated and feared that man at times but I always respected him.
Semper Fi, Marine.

My Senior DI did the same thing and got an award for it as well. Crazy too, I was India Co. as well!
Boot was fun, my Platoon had duty to cut the lawn in front of our barracks and they gave us this 80 year old riding mower that no one could get started. Drill Instructor, "Get the fuck out of the way recruit", gets it started, gets on and the mower just takes off and he's riding around like a bucking bronco trying to control it, he runs it into a tree and gets off, "That's how you do it, I just gave you instruction!"
OORAH, MARINE
Nah my drill instructor would have let me die I should have kept in touch with him hope he’s alight.

When I was in boot pretty much the same thing happened, and our DI held it over his head for the rest of the cycle, “don’t worry son, just fucking be a shitbag, the drill instructor didn’t save your life or anything.” “Son, it’s fucking wild that you almost died and another grown ass man had to save you...and you’re still not screaming”
