Parris Island Drill Instructor Earns Saves a Recruit's Life

Credit: Lance Cpl. Joseph Jacob | Date Taken: 07/26/2017
U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Quaylain D. Brown currently serves as a drill instructor with India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. On July 26, 2017, Brown received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his part in the saving the life of a recruit. While consuming food on July 24, 2017, a recruit began choking on his food, Brown saw the recruit struggling to breath and performed the Heimlich Maneuver to clear the blockage in his throat, allowing the recruit to recover. Brown joined the Marine Corps in 2011. “I wanted to become a drill instructor because I always wanted to be involved directly and influence the future of the Marines Corps,” said Brown, a 29-year-old native of Abbeville, La. “What better way to do that than to become a drill instructor.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 19,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 49 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. Joseph Jacob)

Watkins, and Sgt.Nichols.Even to this day exactly 40 years since first meeting them I still remember their names and faces. If it weren't for them I wouldn't be anywhere the man I am today.I don't think they know fully the thousands of lives they have had a positively profound influence in their lives.Thank you Sgt Harris,Sgt Johnson,Sgt Watkins, and Sgt.Nichols!

That’s actually kind of annoying, for that medal, you’re supposed to put yourself in harm’s way and risk your own life saving a life in a non-combat zone. One of my Marines fell of the side of a mountain on a hike and got caught on a sideways tree and fractured his ankle. I had a Marine grab my ankle and someone onto his, hanging off a big cliff to reach down and save the other Marine and that still wasn’t worthy of the medal... No disrespect to the DI, what he did is nothing to criticize, but getting this award is questionable.

@@itsAmeOFP Oh, I don't know about that. True, the Army, and to a lesser extent the Navy, but especially the Air Force just gives medals away. But I spent 18 years in the air wings, and 2 years as a Drill Instructor. Got a Good Conduct Medal. That's it. Ran an Avionics shop "perfectly" for 30 days, They gave a NAM to the NCOIC for that. But he was on leave that 30 days, I was running it. I got an 8 on Initial Drill as a Drill Instructor, the one time I was allowed to compete. I'm guessing that a 4 or less was the normal first time score, because everyone was telling me to try to get at least a 4. Every platoon I trained took the range, with NO unq's, and the highest percentage of Experts. Nothing. I did get a Meritorious Mast for an Honor Platoon though. Back to the Wing. Inspector General is coming to inspect the squadron, I volunteered for the drill platoon and the junk on the bunk inspections. The inspection went off with minor discrepancies, almost none, and the drill platoon performed flawlessly, not only when I put them through a card, but when they picked random Marines from the platoon also. The drill platoon got a score of Noteworthy. NO discrepancies. Not even a thank you. Desert Storm, went up on one of the flights, KC-130, pilot asked me to have a look at his radar indicator. So I'm sitting in the pilot's seat, when I notice that the HSI is showing and increasing left bank. Before it reached a point that control could not be restored, I took the controls and leveled the aircraft, preventing it from crashing and saving everyone on board, including me. Easy to see why I didn't get anything for that one though. The pilot and co-pilot would both have to admit that they both FUCKED UP the positive flight control changeover. And finally, didn't get any "end of tour" award when I retired. So don't say they give shit away in the Wing because they don't. Not even when you actually do something.

Boot was fun, my Platoon had duty to cut the lawn in front of our barracks and they gave us this 80 year old riding mower that no one could get started. Drill Instructor, "Get the fuck out of the way recruit", gets it started, gets on and the mower just takes off and he's riding around like a bucking bronco trying to control it, he runs it into a tree and gets off, "That's how you do it, I just gave you instruction!"

When I was in boot pretty much the same thing happened, and our DI held it over his head for the rest of the cycle, “don’t worry son, just fucking be a shitbag, the drill instructor didn’t save your life or anything.” “Son, it’s fucking wild that you almost died and another grown ass man had to save you...and you’re still not screaming”
