My oldest child had Acinic Cell Carcinoma, of the salivary gland, much like what this guy had it sounds like. She was diagnosed with stage III 3 years ago. Had radical surgery, with multiple lymph node removal, not to mention tissue and muscle removed from her left jaw/neck area. She then had 30 days of radiation treatment, which the doctors admitted would not decrease her chance of re-occurrence by even 1%. She opted for the radiation because she has 2 babies to raise, and wanted as much in her corner as she could get. Even after that, she has been given an 85% chance of re-occurrence within 5 years. We called all over the country trying to find a place that had done any trials/treatment of this cancer. We could not find any, we were informed that it is a fairly rare cancer, especially in a woman in her 30's.

I just wanted everyone to know that I had my parotid gland removed almost a year ago and while it was of course scary (first time I had ever had surgery), and recovery is still ongoing, it was worth getting done because it will not go away....I waited a year after finding it and it more than doubled in size in that time. Perhaps it would not have been as large a scar otherwise. Pluck up the courage and just get it done. The post-operative pain was not that bad (3-4 out of 10) and controllable with drugs.

I am 60 years old male and had been diagnosed having “Low Grade Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma in my left Parotid Gland. The very first thing I did to find a surgeon who is expert in Parotid Gland Surgery and can safe my facial nerves if possible. Luckily I found one and surgery went very well. Hospitalised for only 2 days and recovery was made in 10 days. Tumour was removed completely but due to tight margins the surgeon advised for Radio Therapy to avoid reoccurrence. I have gone through 33 sessions (5 sessions per week) of Radio Therapy (RT). This period of 2 months was Most difficult time of my life while having a severe after affects like reduction of Saliva, loss of taste buds, swelling of throat , gums and tongue, loss beard’s hair and head’s hairs, swelling of ear and inflammation inside the ear. Part of the face and neck skin become like first degree burnt. The worst part was that slowly I had to switch to liquid diet which resulted weight loss. I am recovering now from the after affects and my taste buds have slightly improved even after 4 weeks from RT. I hope it may take further 2 more weeks for normal recovery.

I had an ultrasound two days ago and was suggested by my ENT to do a needle aspiration after the ultrasound was read. Then was suggested today to do a contrast MRI..which I am hesitant about due to the dye danger. I'm feeling the needle aspiration could tell if it's cancer or not. The MRI seems much more invasive with the contrast. Anyone here have a MRI with contrast after finding the lump? Mine is 1cm right in front of my left ear lobe.
