Have seen a few comments here that aren't too constructive, I'm no expert but I've purchased the same tool last week after using a freinds lathe for a few months. You were actually using the chisel upside down, the bowl shape should be facing upwards! Also while the wood is still a rectangle, try to keep the rpm as low as you can until the wood is more symmetrical and then you can bump the speed up! Another tip from one beginner to another, if you are sanding try to sand from underneath the wood as it is much safer because then nothing will fly towards your face if you let go of the sandpaper! Hopefully these things will help you on your wood turning journey!

It is rather dangerous and unethical if you don't know what you are doing to do a video review. Not everyone knows that this guy has no idea what he is doing and they might follow his steps and get injured. If you have no experience and knowledge about something, don't make a video for the sake of having some views and likes on youtube. Every ignorant now uploads a video for the world to see on some review, but it doesn't cross their mind that this might actually harm someone who tries to learn, never mind harming themselves. There is no constructive criticism or sympathy for people like that. It's different thing making a mistake and another to actually not having a clue what you are doing and pretending you do.

Be careful, don't turn a bowl with your skew chisels like this, it is very dangerous. If the blade catches, you may get injured. Buy a proper bowl gouge, and only touch the wood on the left half of the bowl center. Because if your chisel is on the right side, the rotation of the piece pushes your chisel up and it may throw back at you.

It hurts me to see how you hold the knives. Next time try their sharp edges too! ;) Anyway... thanks for the review.

Read the instructions! You have not got a clue. DANGEROUS ADVICE.

Not to be rude and with respect, you have just shown what not to do with a lathe - I know you are a beginner, but using a lathe like that could send you to hospital. 1) get the tool rest as close as possible and turn the wood by hand to make sure the wood won't catch the rest, exploding off the lathe. Gap must be small so that if the chisel catches it doesn't break your wrist or pull yo into the machine. 2) the u shaped chisel is a roughing gouge, used to quickly turn square to round. It should not be dragged/rotated the way you did. Turn in the direction you are moving and move your body back and forth, not your hands. Always keep speed low when roughing square to round, as doing it on high speed is very dangerous.. 3) The skew chisel is best used for shaping . 4) As you work, keep adjusting the tool rest close to the workpiece - you don't want a 1inch gap like that - it's dangerous.. Watch the experienced wood turner's videos on KZread to see the correct wat to use your lathe, stay safe and have fun creating..

good review. needed to see this working. 1 safety tip. Keep the toolrest as close to the wood as possible (without hitting). If it's too far away the wood may catch on the chisel with greater force.

Not as close as possible. A couple of cm away or you cannot get the right angle which means you will get a catch.

The way you're doing that is really dangerous, you've got the tools upside down and your tool rest is way too far from the work. Having the tool rest so far away will drag your hand into the work when the tool snags. Please do another, safer, video please.

Nice review! What type is the thread of the motor spindle??? Have you found compatible chockes?

hmm think a few lessons are needed, gap between work and rest way too big chisel way to blunt or ground wrongly

Hi I have a problem. I am 15 years of age and I am starting to get into making pens but there is a problem with my lathe. I purchased a parkside lathe but the pen mandrel I purchased doesn’t fit on the machine. I have tried a 1 mt and a 2 mt pen mandrel but my lathe doesn’t have a hole to fit. All I can do is set the pen mandrel on the mantle and when I turn it on it’s not powered properly and and when I touch the chisel against the black the whole mandrel stops spinning is there a chuck or something I can purchase were my pen mandrel will be secured tightly to the lathe so it doesn’t stop spinning when I try and chisel it ?

try Axminster tools or Stiles & Bates, they are about👍🏻 don't give up!

Perhaps you should have watched a few videos on how to handle those chisels

any1 know if there is possibility for center hole drilling?

Possibility? Yes. Accuracy or precision? Not really. I suggest first drilling the center hole with a drill press or carefully held hand drill, then using the tailstock centering pin to align the workpiece when attaching it to the headstock face plate.

Were those tools sharp?

I use A1 - see no difference. Thread on motor spindle is M18 (I am looking for chuck I guess it will be with adjustment ). Center pin is broken already I've needed to make ajustments to work futher. It's ok for the beginners - but will not get perfect accuracy. I do agree - the testing is not safe at all, please don't hurt you self, chisel holding is awful.

In a year or two, You are a very advanced beginner. Good luck! Till nowYou doing well. "Hattelya".( I hope You know who said that). By the way, you should be closer with the cutting tool holder, I think.🤔

Yeah, so the method in which you are using those tools… 😳😱🤯

Some observations: * You appear to have been using the "trailing edges" of the tools. Like putting a butter knife blade on its side and dragging the edge across the butter, not cutting or carving. This is a very strange mistake, but understandable given the lack of experience and generally excited atmosphere. * You mounted the tool support much too far from the workpiece, limiting your leverage and ability to control the tools. Again, inexperience and excitement. * You appear to be working with the tools at a 90° angle into the workpiece. I can't really describe the proper angles in writing, but you should be able to find online illustrations of their proper use. Overall, it's an excellent display of what the beginner experience will look like. I'd like some close-up footage of the ends of the machine to identify potential flexing during work, but aside from that I must reiterate that you've done a good job.

I was going to buy one till I saw this. The motor doesn’t seem very strong, it slows down far too easily. Maybe if you used the tools correctly, it would work better.

After watching this video I'm convinced the person doing the turning is a complete novice. A danger to himself and anyone else who follows his example. I have never seen a wood turning video on wood turning that has made so many errors. For goodness sake don't follow his example or you will end up with a serious injury.

Well, I got to 6:40 and gave in! here is a 'review' by somebody who has no idea how to use the tools he is 'reviewing'!! ........😳

This is an accident waiting to happen. The lathe is clearly nothing more than a toy, you are using the tools incorrectly and they are blunt. The tool rest is way too far from the wood. Please make sure you use a face shield as I suspect it won’t take much for the wood to be ejected. Best to get a proper lathe, some sharp tools and a lesson or two- keep safe.

Setup and techniques look terrible when compared to some of the other instructive videos on KZread. Safety seems to be non existent. As for the tool well Lidl charge about 65% of other suppliers so not a bad place to get a bottom end tool. My impression of wood turning as against using a metal lathe is metal is very technical, more predictable, and more accurate/repeatable. Wood turning looks more like an art. As such a machine at this price point is fine as an introduction where not too much money is spent before the user decides if woodturning is for them or not. When the limitations of the Parkside tool becomes irksome then throw 10x the price on something decent. Also maybe some lessons on woodturning, a few more tools, a face shield and mask would not go amiss.

Im sorry your technique is awfull. Both tools are being used wrongly and dangerous please consult youtube videos woodturning beginners before using. You will see the benefits. I am a woodturning instructor.
