Parkland shooting trial: Nikolas Cruz shot up class learning about Holocaust

The sentencing phase of the trial for Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz continues with testimony from witnesses at the school including students and teachers. Ivy Schamis, a teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, described for the jurors what was happening leading up to and during the shooting on Valentine's Day 2018. Ivy Schamis was teaching a class on the history of the Holocaust when gunshots suddenly rang out in the hallway and soon after into their classroom. A number of students from her class were killed in the shooting.

I like that she gave so much detail about how that class was going, right up until the shooting started. Especially the joy she spoke of when the kids knew the answer to her question. I imagine it would be in some way heartwarming to the parents to hear her account - while at the same time of course it highlights how senseless and tragic the whole incident was for all directly involved, and for American society as a whole too.

Your student's do become like your children in a way, whether you have to push them or love them to improve their education, the relationships you form when you have a truly caring teacher is wonderful. He would always prank me, by telling me to look down at my shirt, while grabbing my nose haha and then shouting " HAHA GOTCHA" and just walk away..he did that every single day, for 4 years and I always fell for it. Omg he made my miserable HS years so much better..I never had a father and mom abandoned me when I was 2, so this guy was like the dad I never had. He truly cared about his students, but I could tell I was his favorite, and only because he knew of my difficulties at home and i was very athletic so naturally, he pushed me harder than others ,to succeed..he cared to brighten up my days, sincerely! If a student comes in late, a guard can let them in. Also, bulletproof windows at the doors, or no windows at all, with metal doors. That alone would've prevented this tragedy.

@@NOT-FINANCIAL-ADVICE. first, this isn’t the first person I’ve seen comment this. The hurt & anger & trauma caused by parkland was immense, and one wouldn’t be crazy to assume that being found guilty of something this horrific would come with an automatic death sentence. Second, there are people watching in other countries, and some in the US, that may not understand that sentencing would be a separate trial. Being snarky & condescending is super unnecessary.

Right, I honestly had to go check when these videos were being posted because according to KZread, it was 9 months ago he pled guilty. So while waste the money and traumatize these people all over again? I think its pretty friggen obvious what his sentence should be. I don't remember ever seeing a sentencing trial like this before.

I graduated in 2000 and I remember our 1st shooting drill after Columbine. It never occurred to me to be afraid of something like this before that day. I’ll never forget being told we had to get in a classroom before the doors locked or we could be trapped in the halls with a shooter. The world was never the same after those two murderers decided to change it.
