Greetings Tau'va,
Fetch me my Battlesuit its time for us to bring the rain of fire down to the enemies to the greater good. In this video I walk you through how I go about building tau lists, focusing on the fundementals and understanding my approach. The game is very complex and we can often not get distracted by what damage we can do and not focusing on what will score us points. I pride myself on inspiring people to think outside the box and build creative lists to improve the points that they score then as you progress as a gerneral casn dive into more specialised lists.

    This is super awesome, I've been playing the game for a little while but I've never understood the finer points of list building like trading pieces vs damage (I usually go all in on damage lol) thanks for making this!

    A few things I find interesting for Retaliation Cadre. - 6 model Stealth Battlesuit unit. Decent amount of durability and firepower for just 120 pts. Being infantry and flying can make for a nasty, close range surprise through ruins in Retaliation Cadre. Also tend to live long enough to fulfil their role, unless your opponent really want to focus them down. They were "better" prior to the balance update. Strictly speaking, they are the same as before, but now the Crisis are cheaper to use. - Starscythe with 6 flamers, using Rapid Ingress to counter if/when your Stealth Battlesuits gets pushed. Opponent positions in the movement phase to get a future charge on your stealth suits, and now suddenly they are facing 6 Flamers on Overwatch(at S5, maybe even with extra AP) if they want to call that charge. The "easy to push flank" has now suddenly gotten a lot more complicated. - Farsight AND Shadowsun. Do not underestimate the damage potential of Shadowsun in Retaliation Cadre. A2 S11 Fusion Blasters, A2 S8 Missile Pods, A5 S4 Flechette Launcher. A lot of thresholds reached. Also helps with CP(can be an issue when using Farsight) and can provide extra rerolls for units not guided by the Stealth Suits.

    Interesting video. With 260 left I would add Shadowsun and another ghost keel. Additional midboard presence, possible CP generation from Shadowsun and two more infiltrators. I would also consider running the second ghostkeel with the FC but that's because my local meta is heavy into T12 tanks. I really like what you pointed out with the strike team and their indirect

    Gotta wait to watch the whole thing, but wanted to do the assignment in the meantime: - 1x2 Rail Broadsides with Seeker and Weapon support, 2x missile drones - Kroot Carnivores I love the anti-tank efficiency of the Broadsides and was loving 2x2 before their points went up. Carnivores add some more mission play and screening since I wasn’t able to fit in Pathfinders. Love the content, thanks for the great work! :)

    @@PuretideprogramI did! Was happy to see the different point levels and how you built it up. As much as I want to maximize on the detachment I think Tau still need the infantry and trade pieces like you showed. Love my gundams but you’re right in needing the support. What’s your opinion on giving retaliation detachment bonus applying to melee as well? And or Stealth suits becoming battleline for the detachment like we’ve been seeing in various detachments?

    Kyle thank you so much for this video. Im building my army now getting back into Tau and I want to play this Detachment. And needed some ideas but I don't get to play much anymore. Here in Mexico 40k is very big. But we're trying to grow thanks again. And I would want to run Darkstrider and another Riptide in the points. Thanks again love your channel.

    Thanks very much for this content. I would add another burstscythe unit 110pts with enforcer with grenade rack, missile pods and and shield drones 100pts and a fireblade 50pts to add to a strike team to increase the number of shots on indirect turret for the suppression fire.

    Great video and a fun challenge as well! I think for the last 260 we could probably do with some utility. Something simple and effective like darkstrider for that 12 inch no no zone really can force awkward deployment or threat investment that puts pressure off your bigger toys. A mobile defensive piece like shadow sun can either defend the backfield really quickly for cheap OR transition to a late game piece that aims to deal with the weakened stuff thats trying to hold middle. Last 100 would probably have to be a pathfinder team, while dark strider can hoof it solo or run with these guys, having multiple markerlight sources that can double as a speed bump, quick damage pressure with rail guns, or just be an objective scoring piece can really take some of the heat off of those crucial pieces that this list is running singles of

    I think that the change to bring it down alone is enough to make this detachment and Tau in general so much better. Killing a unit of 3 suits now gives 2 points instead of 6. That is massive.

    Great video. I also like using flamer starscythes for the threat of overwatch, but also to guide since they auto hit.

    Great video! I'd add a Farstalker + Trail Shaper package (usually with 1 extra team of hounds but not here). You can block so much space with that package and the 5 hounds can often be placed on 2 objectives. Then I'd change the Ghostkeel to a 2nd Riptide and add a Pathfinder Team with Grav Drone. 2000 pts.

    What would the hounds do on objectives? I thought they were OC 0 and so can neither hold, nor do actions. This was my favourite tactic, but now ?

    @@Pontook The Kroot Hounds have an ability called Hunting Hounds. They get OC1 while within 12" of a friendly Kroot character model. On almost every table you can block a huge part witht he Farstalker + Trail Shaper and then just replace the Hounds and Trail Shaper + Farstalkers before the match.

    The list I've been running competitively for ret. cadre has been massively helped by the points cuts, it let me get an entire extra squad of suits in! As-is, I'm currently running: Farsight 2x coldstar with 4x fusions, one with prototype weapons, the other with grenade racks 1x enforcer with cyclic, airburst frag, burst cannon & shield (would do 4 guns, but shield is glued on while other guns are magnetized), and the starflare ignition system 3x Sunforge suits 3x Flamer Starscythe suits (one of these might be swapped with a fireknife if I decide to drop the internal grenade racks off one of the coldstars) 2x Stealth teams 2x Riptides 1x kroot carnivores 1x kroot farstalkers 1x breachers with fireblade (probably getting swapped with 2x strike teams now that I've seen this video) All crisis suits have the 3x gun, 2x shield, 1x marker drone combo, crisis commanders have 2x shield drone, stealth suits have marker + gun drone (I prefer the versatility of assault when needed over +1 wound on one model) I feel like people really like the burst cannon starscythe suits, despite the fact that the flamers tend to statistically do more wounds on anything T4 or lower? I prefer the flamers for the overwatch and the bonus of them being good backup spotters since they never need to be guided themselves

    The gun drone does nothing for the stealth suits anymore as you can't advance and do actions. Marker drone allows you to advance and still guide. So the only benefit to a gun drone is 2 S5 shots BS5 why wouldn't you want the extra wound?

    @@Puretideprogram while it was originally for the actions, I find having access to trigger strike and fade if I really need it tends to be slightly more survivable than 1 extra wound. I'm also probably still playing stealth suits a bit too fearlessly tho, so they do tend to end up dying rather quickly, extra wound or no. Either that, or my local meta just HATES stealth suits for some reason.

    @@Puretideprogram yeah 100%. It could very well be that the shield drone is actually better, but just from my experience with stealthsuits, they either die instantly or don't get shot

    I would add a Hammerhead because I think they're cool and another band of starscythe battle suits with burst cannons. 145 + 110 = 255 I commented to help your algorithm! thank you for the video!

    At the points you have remaining a Starscythe and a hammerhead would probably fit the bill. You have a lot of anti elite and anti tank already, the hammer head while not directly benefiting from the detachment is still a piece that prevents your opponent from exposing armor. The starscythe are there to deal with horde the one thing you do not have units for atm. Orks are still a popular army along with guard provide different questions from mass hordes of troops. The other option is Riptide and a 3rd unit of Fire warriors. Reasoning Rule of 2 is 1, one is none for the Riptide. Fire warriors provides one extra unit of battle line to be present.

    I think I'd add: unit of farstalkers 85 A trail shaper 65 A unit of hounds 40 And a unit of vespids This would give really good peices for the infiltration war without commiting too many suits forward, and give more objective control and map presence as the farstalkers and hounds can redeploy to the side you want to push and the vespids can come on later for more secondary scoring. Or add: A ghostkeel 160 Shadowsun 100 Which give some more anti-ellite as well as some more lone op units to contest space without getting shot along with some cp efficiency from shadowsun on top of her buff aura

    44:35 I’d always include either Farsight or an Ethereal, for the CP stuff. Ret Cadre is quite CP intensive so having Ethereals generating or Farsight making the deep strike ~free~ *cheaper is pretty huge to my mind x

    -fire warrior support turrets: need to stand still to use it at all, and will be hitting on 6+ if firing Indirect -ironically, with the changes to Bring It Down, we'd probably have used the exact same drone loadout on crisis teams without GW forcing the "no duplicates" rule on us -the number of times I've had a Stealth suit team survive with 1 guy on 1 wound because of the shield drone is legitimately hilarious

    270 points - I would really want a darkstrider for 12” denial. (60) Then flamer scythes with a coldstar, 4 flamers (205) I’ve found the flamers really strong in ret cadre, also allows them to guide for another unit since they don’t need the benefits and allows for a great overwatch unit with 10d6 attacks on overwatch

    ​@@Puretideprogram hmm, Then are you adding units to cripple your opponents objective scoring pieces? a second starscythe unit for 110 a second Coldstar commander for 95 lastly at 55 points a Piranha for a little bit of extra burst. and scout shenanigans (Also because im not sure what else would fit for 55 points and not leave points left over)

    Id probably get rid of the pirahnas and hammerhead for either another unit of commander+sunforges or another riptide and more stealth suits. anything thats not a battlesuit isnt benefitting from detachment rules.

    am i wrong to say there is no point in taking the marker drone over the gun drone for strike team since they allready have the markerlight ability. You can advance and still observe with a gun drone since you have assault.

    Traducir texto con tu cámara I would add a unit of crisis starsythe with flamers to gain some more anti infantry and observer unit. This also gives you access to different combinations when attaching characters to your crisis units depending of your oponent list

    Question, with the Starflare Ignition System, is it the tournament ruling/ mission pack allowing coming back down in T1? I have seen some contention around this with some saying this cannot be done as it puts the unit into Strategic reserves, who cannot come in on T1 as per the RAW.

    No you can because you start on the battlefield therefore don't follow the normal restrictions. They have Also allowed it for other factions so there is a precedent for it like necrons, custodes, grey knights etc...

    I've been thinking of using Ret. Cadre lately, I've found in Kauyon I regularly flood CP as they dont seem to have many greaaat stratagems till turn 3 onwards. In Ret Cadre, I feel like it's the opposite where you want all the CP you can get; is it worth taking an ethereal in one of the strike teams to fish for some more CP (and make them tankier, I think for a 125 point unit they'll be super durable ironically).

    Excellent video! I'm running Ret Cadre and have been wondering where my Cold star/Farsight should be paired. Would Coldstar also be viable as a leader of a Sunforge squad?

    What are your thoughts on using a Flamer Starscythe unit with marker drone as a backup/secondary spotting unit as it’s somewhat durable & can be dropped close to its spotted unit (thinking sunforge mostly) Possibly in Mont’ka it could be combined with an Enforcer with the sustained hits enhancement for better spotting + the enforcer gets the starscythe buff to split fire their weapons somewhere else?

    Bursts going to S6 is a big break point for most infantry, particularly ork boyz. If those are non existent in your meta tho flamers could be the move

    Is there no scope for the Riptide's HBC in Ret Cad? 6 shots into an elite unit that typically has a ++ save always disappoints. I'd definitely agree with others that the points should go into cheap infiltrator units to get some nice early screening/ movement blocking going on.

    question can riptides hit on better than sixes if they overwatch and if they can, how exactly. I don’t understand why you would take an enforcer over a cold star and lose the assault key for an entire unit to give it -1 ap to fireknives over sun forge and to rely on stratagems when you don’t really have that many command points to work with and shadowsun is not a reliable way to get extra command points you also had mentioned that you can deep strike on turn one. Can you explain the process of how that works because I thought no matter what you can’t deep strike until turn 2

    My next list includes a 2-model broadside unit with rails, weapon support system, and the missile pods. With the support system, they’ll ignore the indirect-fire penalty of -1 to hit with their 8 missiles, which I’m excited to try out. Unless I’m mistaken and you cannot ignore that modifier or something? Somebody let me know if I’m wrong

    You can ignore the -1 to hit for indirect, correct. However, if you intend to split fire(Heavy Rail Rifles vs heavy target, Smart Missiles for indirect), then one of the targets will be with a penalty to BS(assuming you are guided). And penalties to BS are not the same as a modifier to hit rolls. Example: You Guide the Broadsides and target a transport with the HRRs. You are also stationary for the Heavy Keyword(your BS becomes 3+ and you get +1 to hit, so you are looking for 2+ to hit). You then use your Smart Missiles to target a different foe indirectly. You take a penalty to BS(your BS4+ becomes a BS5+) for splitting fire and would normally also take a -1 to hit(looking for 6s) due to Indirect, but that is negated by your Weapon Support System. The problem with Smart Missiles is that they are only strength 5 and 0 AP. I guess there could be cases where your Broadsides have an indirect target with 12"(+1 to Strength) and maybe even 6"(better AP), but it would be rare. And when only 1/3 of the shots hits in the first place, they are not going to do much. Not horrible, but not outstanding either. Weapon Support System does help against any form of modifier to hit(Stealth, suppression etc.), and so will also help your main weaponry when targeting such threats.

    If you go second as you're on the battlefield you can go up into deep strike as you're on the battlefield and this overrides the turn 2 restriction.

    @@Puretideprogram I dont think starflare ignition system lets us drop them round1 because it only puts them into strategic reserves, the units that have been dropping down round 1 has the wording of "your next reincforcement step" or whatever it is where as ours doesnt specifiy like theirs... edit: nevermind carry on, mission pack exludes units that go into reservers during the battlefield oh nooo

    Maybe I am wrong but I didn't think starflare could turn 1 deepstrike because the new rules basically say that it has to be written in the rule specifically "when the unit arrives" to be able to do it and SIS does not?

    It's because it would start on the board from deployment and go up and the end of their turn 1 and come down in your turn 1. They clarified that you could do this for a custodes unit
