Hello everyone, and welcome back to a brand new episode of Elevating Early Childhood.
Guess what?
This week's episode is another amazing interview, with the one and only Dan St. Romain!
Dan is a brilliant author and consultant with 30 years of experience in the education field.
He has served as an educational diagnostician AND a behavior specialist on an early childhood campus, so, all in all, Dan really knows what he's talking about!
And today, he's here to discuss how to communicate behavior to parents when you're not using behavior charts.
If you've listened to last week's episode (if you haven't yet, tune in here), then you know my take on behavior charts: I don't think they’re necessary.
But even if we don't use them, we can still keep parents in the loop about their children's behavior.
How?
Tune in now to find out!

I cannot even express how badly I needed to hear this!!! I have families on both ends of the spectrum, one that’s a pesky fly that reports back to me in every single “bad” behavior their child told them about happened in class…boy oh boy! I am taking away so much from this episode that I’ll be implementing with my groups

This! This! This! I had that red clip kid. I finally stopped looking at that colored mark in his folder. It made him feel like a failure and I felt like one. He hated school and completely gave up that year. He compared himself to every other child that stayed on green. I would tell him “All I ask for is your best. Your best and their best doesn’t look the same sometimes and that’s ok.” The next year, no clip chart. Guess what, he had a completely different attitude towards school. As a teacher, I feel daily communication doesn’t have to be about behavior. I also noticed that, because I don’t make my daily communication about behavior, when I do have to speak to a parent about behavior they come in with a different attitude and are more willing to work together to find something that works.

Great feedback from the parent and you.. I don't have any behavior chart in my class. But we write a daily assessment/ Progress report for each child and interacting with parents when they pick up their child with great improvements and some improvements that need to adjust.

I am taking so much away from this discussion! I did away with my behavior chart a few years ago but find myself still resorting to the rewards and consequence approach. I will definitely start using the note system that is not always based on behavior when we return from break.

I have been a website reader and viewer for years! I teach Special needs prek so this topic is spot on. I also love your hair and makeup in this video. I've never had clip charts or flip charts. I used to have a folder with green or red days but that didn't work of course. I try to really focus on the positive with the kids.
