Parapet Caps on Our Flat Roof Project [All Done But One]

Today I installed five of the six parapet caps! Unfortunately, even though I started as early as I could, I still ran out of time -- and I ran out of eater stop. But that's OK, the last parapet cap to install is in the warmest section of the roof, and now the snow has been completely removed from the forecast!
Earlier in the week, there was supposed to be up to five inches of snow starting tonight, but now, nothing but clouds. So I'll run to town and pick up some more water stop, some black trim nails, some black rivets and wrap this parapet cap job up on Sunday. Even though we missed the snow, we will have high winds instead and I'll be staying off the roof for a couple of days 🥶
I will be installing the sound-deadening in room 13 in the coming days which will include Green Glue and drywall on the wall where the compressor goes so that I can get that installed in the coming weeks. Make sure to stop back for that!

Update: The next day, Cindy and I went to town specifically for the water stop to complete the job. I could have waited a week for nicer weather, but I didn't wand it left unfinished one more day so when we got home, I got the tin cut and installed. The job is now 100% done for the year with only minor cosmetic issues to deal with in the Spring. Here is the Siding playlist: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gouIra-MgpzJnaw.html I have drywalling and a temporary wall to install on the inside and need to finish pulling the main electrical wire and hook up the electricals at the box -- a good deal of work, but I am not pressured by the weather and can work a longer, more comfortable day now. I will be splitting that work between the addition, the machine shed, and the greenhouse in the coming month or two, including plumbing the shed to install the urinal and sink, and installing the compressor and running the air lines. A lot to see so make sure you subscribe and click on that update bell and chose to receive them all!

Thank you Jeanne -- tin is not my forte, but it came out pretty good if you don't count the tin that was sized incorrectly. Glad to be done with it and be able to move on to other things 😊

don't need so much caulking you shouldn't need to caulk where you should have an s clip also screws look nicer on the back of the cap and should lock in tight with the s clip and the safetys on both sides of the drip edge but other wise great work of that quick square

Thank you Rebel, I installed windows way back when, and they had aluminum trim. I'm pretty rusty now, but I can get it if I take the time 😊

Nice video! I'm also building a parapet. I'm curious, where did you get your caps?

Thanks Adam, I just figured out what shape I needed, and had the local Amish bend it up for me. If you don't have Amish in your area, any siding/gutter guy could do it as well.

No. It will be completed though. We built a woodshop first so we can make the panels ourselves 😊

How do you build you're parapet walls? I am finding difficulty in finding a straight answer anywhere else.

It's hard to describe, but you can see it in the videos from earlier in the project - I filmed the entire thing. On this project the rim joist that surrounds the mono trusses is taller than the trusses themselves and creates the parapet with the addition of some material on the roof-side. I also go over things in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqVrza2DcanUmco.html Hope that helps 😊

Great videos I'm doing a roof top deck also... have you added decking and rails yet?

  • @PlanetMojo

Unfortunately no, covid put a damper on that. We would like to put in the deck this year if the budget allows, but wood is three times the price it was pre-covid around here. I have an idea for a removable rail system that I will be trying, but we can't afford triple the price for wood right now. The rails were always an issue for me because that is the most likely place for a leak. I think I solved that problem but time will tell. You'll probably have yours done before I get to it 😑

@@PlanetMojo I'm worried to about the rail post.. I think I'm going to have foam sprayed under the joist to seal everything..I hope that works, the roof top is right over my kitchen. I don't know how I'm going to add decking material to the roof top since it's going to be higher then my threshold. Any feedback is greatly appreciated

@@danielali214 I know where you're coming from. The railings are almost always where leaks develop on flat roofs. My plan is to cantilever the deck over the parapet flush with the outer edge and have rubber feet resting on top of the parapet cap. I'll then attach one post to each deck square with a top mounter rail that I can easily remove to lift up a deck square for maintenance/cleaning. I will likely use modified black pipe for the rail. If the deck is higher than the threshold, that's a problem. Does your roof have a parapet or is it just flat?

@@PlanetMojo right now it's just flat joist and plywood on top of it... I have a contractor but he seems like he's winging it...not sure what a parapet is exactly 🤦🏾‍♂️

Just looked it up...doesn't have that yet but I think I'm going to suggest that. But again it seems like it will make the decking much higher than my threshold
