That is actually the case with many songs. The singer voice changes over the years and often in gets better so a song from a decade ago suddenly feels like new and much much better. It's really amazing.

this reminded of the growled belted notes that Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson and Jessie J have been doing often in their careers. wouldn't be surprised if Hayley was influenced vocally by them.

I heard they never performed this back in the day bc she didn't feel comfortable with the required range (could've been too painful emotionally too tbh); I'm glad she finally got there tho bc it's such a great track and it deserves to be heard

Her range now is WAY easier accessed. It's obvious she's really worked on her technique in songs like this. Even in The Only Exception, she used to ALWAYS dodge the higher notes but now she never shies away from them and they're not really even a challenge for her now.

You can definitely feel the emotion in this song. Back when it came out, I remember how much it felt like a punch to the gut. This live performance left me speechless and in tears because you can definitely tell that she’s truly tapping into somewhere emotionally, painfully deep in the way she is executing her voice.

She had a lot of vocal issues back in the day that she had to learn how to not damage her voice. Any this is one of the highest register songs she sings so I’m not surprised by that.
This is both a kiss on the forehead and a punch in the gut and I love it

That first few seconds, where everyone recognizes those guitar notes and loses their FUCKING minds, I absolutely love that.
she created a song that can't be sung. you have to practically die just to get it out. what an artist to create such a powerful piece of work. a song that destroys its singer. what a poet.

I'm so glad she did this. I know some sources were saying she never did it live before because she didn't think she'd be able to hit the high notes in her current condition, but I feel like it makes more sense that way. Back then, this song in her teens/early adulthood could have been that young girl screaming after her first love, while now, what she musters seems more like a heart-wrenching cry to a life-long partner who slipped from her grasp. The matured nature of her voice just breathes new meaning into the song. God bless this band

This is one of those songs isn’t it? Absolutely one of my favorites, makes me cry instantly
her voice unlocks somthing deep down that i fight every day to hide... if that makes sense
Think of me when you're out, when you're out there I'll beg you nice from my knees And when the world treats you way too fairly Well, it's a shame I'm a dream All I wanted was you All I wanted was you I think I'll pace my apartment a few times And fall asleep on the couch And wake up early to black-and-white reruns That escaped from my mouth (oh, oh) All I wanted was you All I wanted was you All I wanted was you All I wanted was you I could follow you to the beginning Just to relive the start And maybe then we'd remember to slow down At all of our favorite parts All I wanted was you All I wanted was you All I wanted was you All I wanted was you All I wanted was you
I don't know how many times I've watched this now.. her voice is incredible and has really got stronger since the song was originally recorded. Especially at 2:42 - 3:01. Would love them to release a re-record/live version!

Insane! What a performance! She is not from this world! The sound is perfect, all the band plays like one. Every single one of them plays perfectly. Love this song!
I was always so confused as to why Hayley didn't sing this song live. If I can belt out every note like nothing, she surely has been able to do it this whole time. But then imagine doing that song every night on tour for weeks or months. It's by far her most difficult song to sing and considering that, you can see why she avoided doing it. I'm just glad she finally got the strength to start doing it live reguarly!
