Parallel Pen vs Dip Pen - Broad Edge Pen Comparison

#CalligraphyForBeginners #Broadedgepen #VivianUang
Hi friends! If you are interested in learning broad edge pen calligraphy, this video will help you decide whether you want to get a traditional dip pen or a Parallel pen by Pilot.
With the traditional dip pen, you can choose from a wide range of nib sizes and styles of pen holders, which can be an exciting shopping adventure or too overwhelming. If you want to keep things simple, Pilot Parallel Pens will help you start writing calligraphy in no time.
With both the traditional dip pens and the Parallel pens, you’ll be able to write in styles such as Italic, Gothicized Italic, Roman, Blackletter, Foundational, Uncial, Carolingian, etc.

Excellent attempt for sharing the domain knowledge and experience..... I have been also pursuing calligraphy.... Always making my own fountain pen nibs from readily available in market to suit the requirement.... Using 5 ml injection syringe with 18no.needle to fill the reservoirs and cartridges with inks of my choice..... Indeed, working with pilot parallel plate pens needs lot of practice....👍👌🖌️✒️🖍️🤠

I will share that I use a syringe with my favorite ink and refill the cartridges. You can also fill the entire handle with ink, and if you screw it tightly to the nib it does not leak. You have to make sure, however, that you are not using an ink with shellac in it such as India ink. When I refill the handle, I do it over the sink under running water. My favorites are walnut ink that I make with walnut ink crystals or Moon Palace Sumi ink diluted with about one third water.

Just a question, why can't you use shellac ink?

@@agrios5018 I have taken several calligraphy classes and have always been told to stay away from India Ink or even acrylic ink because it is very hard to completely clean off of your nib. It builds up and interferes with your nib's ability to write and also damages the metal. It would definitely clog a Parallel pen. My favorites are diluted Moon Palace, gouache or walnut ink. I don't care for the BLACK Parallel Pen refill cartridges because the ink bleeds. I have contacted the company several times but no response. I can write a word on the same paper in italics with their black ink and then their colored ink cartridges, and the black will be the one that feathers and bleeds.

The dye in the ink cartridges may have dried up a bit depending how long they have been in the plastic. You can reconstitute the dried up dye by adding a bit of distilled water with a syringe.

Hi there. Lovely quotes and true. Mat 13:52. I have quite a collection of nibs and holders now but for a beginner it is bewildering. (I also have around 160 books on calligraphy) William Mitchell is an English brand which has been around since 1825. Speedball is American brand and began in 1899. Brause (pronounced roughly in English like (brow - sa) is a German manufacturer who started in 1850 and expanded into nibs in 1895. WM are softer and good for light-handed people, Brause are stiffer and good for the more heavy-handed, and Tape nibs are somewhere between the two. Speedball is also a good nib, solid in construction but is quite long which gives it flexibility. You might feel your hand to be a little further away from the writing than with the others. You should remove the nib from the holder for the end of work clean. If water gets up into the holder it will lead to rust. WM, Brause and Tape reservoirs slide off.Just hold it with your fore-finger on top and thumb underneath and pull. The Speedball reservoir doesn't come off so has to be dried by sliding something thin between the two parts and moving it backwards and forwards. Some people recomend a small strip of blotting paper. Be careful not to lift the reservoir too far as it will not flatten again. Save some old toothbrushes to scrub a little soap on and off. Rinsing and wiping if you are practicing for hours is good but will not remove all the ink which will build up and cause trouble. Parallel pens are good too, I have them, but they are only fountain pens. Many people refill the ink cartridges using a fine syringe but the ink may not be as dark. Tilt the cartridge, don't keep it vertical, and make the ink run down the side so you don't trap air. Do not use an eye dropper, the hole is too big.
