LYRICS:
A fallen time that's bygone
A crude elite that's from a distant zone
You turn a blind eye on what's "brave"
You don't know if it's the truth you told
Anger looks on the quiet dreaming
Seals the sense incandescent ones
Hold back desire for danger
A bet you lose, you'll have no way to turn
I see a man who lives and breathes corruption
Into a circle that you call your own
Don't run away, from the pain
A claim that you deal with
A power game, from within
Impossible for you to see this
Laid down the laws of deceit
The ones who cherish are the ones who'll go
Into the ashes of a tortured world
Only in mind's eye can you see a light
Harmony breaks, dark awakes
In old eyes, the trouble, feel it
Here to stay, mark the way
Improvise the judgment hearing
Don’t run away, from the pain
A claim that you deal with
A power game, from within
Impossible for you to see this
Anger looks on the quiet dreaming
Seals the sense incandescent ones
All remains of the glowing embers
Is a bleak cold irrelevance

See this band live 1994 in Finland Tavastia Helsinki. Still kicking Ass. Icon is legend album this band discography i think 😮
Great song. Both "Icon" and "Draconian Times" are 2 of the best metal albums of the 90s. A wonderful mix of Metallica, Iron Maiden and Sisters of Mercy but at the same time such an intense musical imprint that seems so fresh 30 years later.
One of the things I love most about this band is that they always took risks, they always took the path they wanted to take and they've always done it very well. How beautiful it is to be able to have both versions. How nice to have a vision of the band 30 years later. Thank you Paradise Lost. Here a fan from 30 years ago

Funny how their most criticised albums aged really well for me. My kind of snobbish, elitist young self always tried to avoid "Host" and "Believe in Nothing" but one year after seeing them live and listening to "The Anatomy of Melancholy" for weeks non-stop I got to really love all their works eventually, making Paradise Lost one of my most important, beloved bands.

He had to suffer a lot doing this record. He already have said he had to abandon this style of vocals because they were literally killing his voice. For him, it is soft or super strong vocals, like the strong vocals in their last albums, the raspy ones are very taxing.,

@@Trikipum The Shades of God/ Icon/ Draconian Times vocals are my favorite, so its unfortunate he had to abandon that style. I know some people say he sounded off key in those albums, but he also sounded more emotive than on other albums, but while still keeping it somewhat harsh. I understand why he had move away from that though.

So many great memories when listening to this. My first concert ever was Paradise Lost + Crowbar on the Icon tour '94. Of course they started with Embers Fire (after the Dead can Dance intro) and then it was just one big happy headbang-, crowdsurf and mosh-fest. Perhaps still my favorite PL record 'til this day.

Just came home after seeing the amazing Strigoi at Camden Underworld, and KZread suggested this amazing surprise … Thank you for the music guys … After all these years you still treat music as a form of art and not a product… and us fans see that and appreciate that … Long live PL.
Damn, this song still sends shivers down my spine! 🤘🏼
Myself ro my son, few minutes ago: It's too late to write to you, but I heard a song just now, which reminded me of my teenage depression. Embers Fire, by Paradise Lost, from the 1993 album Icon. In 1993, I was 16 years old. I didn't fit in with anyone, and I was bullied at school. But I discovered heavy metal. Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, and my favorite band, Paradise Lost. This month, they are re-releasing Icon 30 years, they have re-recorded it in its entirety. In 2006, I had the chance to participate in a PL press conference, and my only question was about what the lyrics meant to the writer. And he told me: nothing, it's just escapism. I think he tricked me. I'm still amazed, to this day, how deep Icon's lyrics are. They saved me, in a world without internet. In 2000, I got my PL tattoo. After I was ready, I thought: what if they disappoint me one day? Until today, 2023, this has never happened. I'm there in this song, to this day.
This was the first song I learned to play on the guitar, and I still play it to this day. That's why it has a special meaning for me. I love this song, and this new version is damn great! Thank you, Paradise Lost! ❤🤘🍻

Well, I prefer the old guitars. Also, the bass is kinda missing on this one. But still a great and beautiful work, with a lot of passion. I'm impressed with Nick's vocals, did not expect the same approach of the original, since now he performs this song live with a cleaner tone. Really amazing

Yeah, the guitars on the original version were better. It sounded very 90s, in a good way. Modern metal guitars seem to sound less dynamic somehow, even if the production value is better.

Yeah, I think there is a nostalgic factor for us that love the band since the 90s. But, trying to be more objective, I think the thing that I'm missing in the guitars are those delays and kinda "wet" and atmospheric sound that made me fall in love with PL music in the first place. I get that the new guitars are heavier, but I personally think the strong aspects of Icon are the melody and the atmosphere.

Timeless. Period.
Just closed my eyes, put headphones on and wished it would be somewhere in the ballpark of the 1993 original. "This can't be! This is absolutely amazing!" It felt great hearing this all-time classic from the incredible "Icon" refreshed and sounding very 2023 (but also showing deep respect for the original). This is great.
Anyone saying better than original obviously never heard the original. This is good, but certainly not better than the original "Embers Fire". Re-recorded "Widow" sounds far more true to the original "Icon". This one is good, but certainly not as good as the original. Don't really care about the guitars in this one tbh. Way too synthetic for my taste. I will still buy it, but just giving my honest opinion. Anyhow, Nick is on point on both songs. I truly hope he keeps this tone for the new record. PL FOREVER!!!
@TheBowelsOfLove

I agree. The vocals on this one, while good are not as true sounding as the new Widow recording and the drums on this new Embers just sound odd in places. It sounds like they are playing it live whereas Widow sounds like it's an album track.
Certainly my favorite P.L. song. I love to hear it, love to cover it. It sounds great byw. Very good mix. Greetings from Chile.
Fuckin great re-recording. Been a fan since around 2009, got a tattoo of the old logo, love this song. I tried to get you to sing it when i saw you live in London during the draconian times revival tour, i was only a kid then and all these big adult metal heads yelled with me "EMBERS FIRE!!!!". You never did play it but it was great haha and you guys rule
have to say, that was awesome - been a while since I`ve listened to Icon, and this rerecording absolutely does it justice

@@The_Original_Homeboy It's probably the production, it took me years to settle into Shades of God because of it. Now I think it's arguably their most consistently well written album, but the mix is VERY different from pretty much anything else in their career and that, alongside Nick's screamed/sung vocals, give it a bit of a growing pains feeling coming off of Gothic. But damn, the songs in their own right are good.
