Gorgeous and clean beach and turquoise blue sea water , nice hotel and looking good breakfast , friendly locals and cats , what on earth do u need more for the laid back tropicle paradise trip?!..

First viatwd GT in 79 - there was only one place to stay which was a family home of some mung bean farmers. The snokeling was amazing right off the beach. We got there via motorised prahau.

Beautiful snorkeling, wow, the water and so cozy beaches !

really liking the Gili part of the Indo trip. So nice to not have scooters everywhere

The water in the Gili's looks amazing. These islands do seem overrun by younger tourists, I wonder how long they can sustain w/o damaging the environment?

It is really only Gili T. Meno and Air are extremely quiet. But yes, there is a huge problem with rubbish.

Being an Aussie and living in Darwin, I spent many a long weekend on the Gilis. Gili Air is my favourite as it is a balance between the overcrowded touristy Gili T and the local village vibe of Meno.

On Gili Air I rented a snorkel and mask on the beach and walked out into the water and less than 100 meters from the shore the snorkeling was amazing. Actually better than a tour boat I took the previous day.

This is true on 99% of those dive-locations in the world. All boats go to same places, all anchor there and the movement of people itself doesn't help locally. But often its done as law by gouverment to actually protect the reefs; i.e. condition of the permit says to only to these "known" places. Some are natural reefs with a given name (Meno Wall) others are literally manmade, some beautifull (BioRock project/artificial new reef) and some overrated (the statues) But yeah often best things to see are when solo snorkling on the unknown locations. During 1 solo snorkling trip i literally saw 90% of the "rare" things i saw during the 10+ divingtrips i did around there, including many macro stuff like sexy shrimp and urangutangcrabs.

Chers TCU. Gilis are lovely but Lombok is even better & coming up...

Depending on how long you are in Lombok you should definitely try and get down to Sekotong and visit the islands of Gili Nanggu and Hili Sudat. Nanggu has amazing snorkelling. A nice place to stay in Sekotong is Krisna Bungalows

I love the Gili Islands, have stayed on Gili T and Gili Air and love both. Not stayed on or visited Gili Meno yet, maybe next trip as well as Lombok. Thye lazy cat guarding the merchandise made me lmao and so did the women that think their butts look good in bum floss bikinis lol

Any trend started by the Kardashians is prob best avoided lol. Guys never had it so good, we don't have to shave any more and women are flaunting their butts. But for me, I prefer a clean shave and clean bikinis (not wedged up the.butt ones;)

The information you provide is very helpful for trip planning. I will be going to Bali and Gili T sometime this year. Was the snorkeling gear provided by the boat tour operator as part of the trip?

Thx Paul. Just signed up with Wise so we'll see. Rarely use room safes and have never had anything nicked. Do I trust them? Sure, as much as one can, as always use best judgement.

The sights are lovely... but the heavy preponderance of tourists is - to me - a turn-off. I had the same reaction when I visited Koh Phi Phi a few years back. Arrived by boat mid-morning. Took a tour, then walked around: young tourists everywhere (mostly young and progressively more drunk or stoned as the day wore on). Very few locals in evidence, except as servers. There seemed to be very little that was Thai about the place. Was glad to leave on the first ferry the next day.

Not sure but they try to get a min/max for each boat to make it viable. If you google Gilis 3 island tour there's many options and prices. Enjoy!

Sadly some of the ponies look worn out. This is how it's been done for generations (transport of goods, etc in horse drawn carts) and of late, tourists. However, electric bikes and shuttles are gaining momentum.
