Papua New Guinea’s top stereotypes part 1: “Aren’t they cannibals there?” 🙄

THE FACTS: Cannibalism existed in PNG amongst certain tribes IN THE PAST…along with neighboring countries like New Zealand and Fiji…yet no one fears those much sought-over destinations…
Why did cannibalism exist? From what I’ve gathered, if invaders intruded on a tribe’s customary land, they were killed and eaten, mostly as a warning to others not to do the same.
THE REAL: As part of my immersion experience with @pngtribalfoundation, they took me to a “Skull Cave” in a very remote area to see the piles of skulls from the last generation of cannibals.
Not going to lie, it was pretty freaky. Especially learning that they only kept the heads. And also that it only stopped 50-100 years ago.
BUT! Cannibalism is LONG GONE and the communities in the areas where it existed are very welcoming and kind. They are now benefiting from their ancestors’ terrifying cultural rituals through tourism, and it helps encourage them to keep the areas accessible!
So in short! Please go to PNG to learn about and SEE remnants of this cryptic cultural custom, but don’t judge the current and future generation based on the past!
PS if you missed my Stories, check my PNG highlight to see why I ended up having to trek through the jungle and into the caves barefoot.
Would you go into a skull cave? …what if I went with you? 😜
Group trip info coming soon!
