PAPAJI - 12 September 1992 "Desire, belief, ignorance: all is mind."
This Satsang starts with a discourse where Papaji explains that everything experienced is mind. “There is no difference between the dream and waking states. In deep sleep all desires return to ignorance, dormant to sprout again. To end this process, avoid desires by rejecting not suppressing. Who is enjoying? One desire will result in next incarnation. We have strong belief of existence. By discrimination reality is that that does not appear or disappear. Ignorance can be checked by reason: this snake is a rope. We return to pure mind and keep quiet. Now you are alone. Facing directly into your own self shining in the heart.”
Other highlights:
. Papaji replies a question about being with someone who is dying. “What is death? Disintegration of the elements. You are going back home. Have no desires or attachments up to the last breath. If you have anyone in your mind you will have to re-appear.”
. Papaji responds to a question on despair and hopelessness with an analogy: “Drew drops from plant falling into river becomes river itself. The experiencer has to die into the experience and not return. Pleasure and pain need to be gotten rid off. Situations will never change. Silence is always there.”
. Papaji tells the story of a woman who was burning her arm in the oven while thinking of God, completely oblivious of what was happening. “Reject all and you are at peace.”

A very unusual satsang from early days. One can see how Papaji out of compassion, in his old age, spends long time in guiding the seekers taking bathroom breaks. Has a few interactions of unusual guidance on prana (breath and mind) - he usually does not discuss yogic methods. Also, a story of how we get used to world as 'normal' and could feel atman as bland or even foul smelling! (Ramakrishna's fisherwoman story) A couple of times in the video, some seekers show frustration and doubt. His equanimity and sincerity is moving. At the end 1:59:03 he guides a seeker (A Sardar) with a direct pointing out quite simply. When Sardar asks how to repeat the experience, Papaji points out that this is not something to be chased by the mind. Then tells a rare story of a girl who gives up husband, sons and family prestige in search of a cup of special wine in a tavern. She does not find the tavern but realizes that giving up her usual life totally, has given her the freedom. The story points out that Atman that we search for is not seen in the form we set out to search for, but the intensity with which we drop the false as false is the key. She says: I have not found the tavern for which I came but I know for certain I have rejected that which has to be rejected that is quite enough to give me in peace. The great satisfying message is that the intense seeking of freedom is sufficient, method and effort is not as important. Freedom seeks those who seek freedom.

Papaji says we are not aware of our own Atman shining in our heart until we "check" (reject) the desires of the senses; to "check" (reject) the belief that our existence and this universe is reality (that "I am the body" and realize that what disappears is only illusion); and to "check" (reject) our ignorance. We check our ignorance by reasoning -- to reason that when we see appearances (for example, a snake, that it is actually a rope) we can reason out and return to something that is light. Now we have pure mind and we need to keep quiet (don't return to desire, belief, or ignorance). Now you are facing your own Atman directly. Use your utmost force -- all that is in your command. Looking unto your Self -- and your previous individual self which had become a fake enjoyer of all these things, will vanish in shame (will disappear) -- once It knows, you are no longer to be fooled that "I am enjoying" or "I have this belief" or "I am very wise." Get rid of all these and something is now directly facing you and this is the time of your death (of the ego) -- don't hesitate to die to this fool because you become where there is no death ("Freedom," "Light," "Beauty"). You will know that "the ego arising" has never arisen, because this illusion of ego vanishes in this instant of ""no time." Make a decision here and now in this instant (satsang). For those who want to play in samsara (the circle of desire, belief, and ignorance), let them play.
