I spent the summer of 1968 in LA, working with my friend and mentor Spooky Dancey. Poppa John came in one night. He approached me and asked if i minded if he sat in. I assured him that it was fine with me and that it wasn't my gig. When he brought in an old Silvertone amp, i thought he was a guitar player. Then he broke out his violin and called the first tune- 'I'll Remember April,' one o' my faves. He counted it off at around 200 BPM and then proceeded to smoke that tune. I remember hitting the stanby switch on my own amp and simply watching him play. I'm not that smart, but i do recognize when I'm in the presence of greatness. I left the club, and driving home i wondered who he was. As a Houstonian, I had never heard of him, but the musical community in LA were thoroughly familiar with Poppa John. It's a memory that lingers on 55 years later.

'Papa' John Creach was the first Amplify a Violin .I think it was 1943...He used a Telephone Handset. He Passed in 1992 of a heart attack during the Northridge Earthquake in California . I met him and his wife in 1975 when I worked in a Hospital In Orange Co. California. He was there to visit a friend. The weekend before,He had played at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach,California.

He actually died in 1994 of congestive heart failure which caused multiple bouts of pneumonia. He passed at the age of 76. He was one of the pioneers for violin amplification but the first was actually Joe Venuti (another masterful violinist but in the jazz genre). He was a humble, soft spoken man with the most amazing energy. Meeting him at the Rathskeller on the University of Miami campus changed my life. RIP Papa, you are still the best blues fiddler I have ever heard!

One thing I always loved most about collecting vinyl was discovering an "old" artist that should've been known to me but I hadn't been exposed to before... This album was like that. I knew who Papa John was but only from Hot Tuna, I'd never heard any of his stuff. When I put this on the listening station, headphones on, I was immediately floored. It was like where have I been all my life!?
