I worked in Paris couture with a few designers for 40 years and each collection was a new adventure. We worked long long hours and many week ends but it was an amazing world to be in. I wore jeans and tshirts for comfort, ate on the job, sat up late, went in the the atelier on sundays when my boyfriend thought I was out buying croisants! The show was the pinnacle, rushing around making sure the dressers knew the clothes, checking the accessories, fixing stuck zippers when the dressers were panicking and scoring the new shoes so the models wouldn't slip. When I worked with Karl Lagerfeld he invented the cocacola smear, rubbing the sticky drink onto the soles of the shoes so the models wouldn't fall. People outside think its all parties and wonderful clothes but we just don't have time. Down time is spent leg waxing, food shopping or just sleeping more than six hours. I started at 6 sewing with my gran then making clothes for my sister at 11 years old then ladies from the village and family members so at 16 I could make patterns, sew and of course design. It was when I saw a documentary of Balenciaga that I realised that fashion was a 'job' and from that day onwards I worked towards that goal. I went to St Martins at 17 and then straight onto Paris. Fashion is an amazing business, it's a tough business, it filters out the un serious and keeps the hard working determined ones. I love Paulo's work, it's such a breath of fresh air and stardust.
