The Pantera channel is the official KZread home of one of heavy metal’s most influential bands. Pantera debuted their signature sound with ‘Cowboys From Hell’ and invigorated the metal scene with raucous hits “Walk,” “Cemetery Gates,” “5 Minutes Alone,” among many others. With the 1990 release of their album ‘Cowboys From Hell,’ Pantera created “power groove” and made them the heroes to headbangers everywhere. Their following album ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ was certified double platinum and widely acknowledged as one of metal’s most enduring masterworks. For the next decade, Philip Anselmo, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, Vinnie Paul, and Rex Brown continued to ascend to the top of the music world with gold and platinum album and home video releases and sold out arena tours. One of my oldest, closest friends, for over 40 years just died last week and we buried him today. He was the biggest Pantera fan in the world, no joke. More band paraphernalia than anyone could ever have. He seen them in concert over 20 times, I was there a few times too. He had a life size cutout of Dimebag Darrell in his house. He had all their autographs on so many items. Followed them through to Damageplan, through Dimebag's and Vinnie's death to his own passing. Life long headbangers we are to the end. RIP Steve ...

  • @buriedunborn

    @buriedunborn

    *Pioneers, there were many groove metal bands formed in the early 90s. Last Crack started like three years before Pantera switched his style, and released a demo in 1987 or 1988, doing progressive groove. The same with Abhorrent, but they had a more thrashy style. Now, there are some other bands that "created" the genre, as Machine Head (they have a thrashy sound too, but they are very often considered groove metal), White Zombie, even Meshuggah. Now, if you might be saying "what? Meshuggah is djent you dumbass", actually, Meshuggah was a technical groove/thrash band, later their started to do shitty djent (because djent sucks!), and they released a demo and an EP in 1989. Pantera is not the inventor of groove metal but one of the pioneers, there was a couple of bands that started doing groove before the release of "Cowboys from Hell", that is considered by many Pantera fans as the first groove metal album ever. I can't understand Pantera fans, I really like Pantera, I even have two CDs, but I can't understand their fans.

    So much bottled lightning from them days, now everyone wants to sound like each other and aren’t getting into bands with other people. And hey if you can produce a kickass solo record all by yourself, fuck yeah more power to you. That said, there’s a clear atomization and cleanliness so to speak taking over metal production that can’t organically produce many bands like Pantera anymore. Shit sucks, but never say never.

    I am new to Pantera. My heart has always been in 70´s classic rock, hard rock, art rock, blues, but I also love heavy, or prog metal. But I can´t help myself, Pantera has got me. Ever since I started listening to Pantera, I can't stop. And I can´t listen anything else now :-D. Such a GREAT, ICONIC band. Original, fresh and great - after all those years. Dimebag Darrell is a true guitar legend and master. One of the greatest ever. So sad we will never get more from him and his brother Vinnie. LEGENDARY band.

    Underrated but not the best either. Vinnie said a long time ago Rex had the biggest free ride. In their day Dime was the best guitarist, Vinnie the best drummer and Phil the best metal vocalist. That’s very hard to live up to as bassists are pretty overshadowed in general. I wouldn’t say he had a ‘free ride’, though. A very recognizable name to any metal listeners of last 3 decades. What a shame there aren’t musicians and bands like this anymore... the industry is “nurturing the weakest trend”.

    Probrobly THE BEST Metal band who not only survived that grunge trash period but carried tons of bands with them and saw their way through it. I feel like Lamb Of God picked up that torch and ran with it in a very Goliath way but the songwriting and tone will never match Dime and Vinnie's chemistry. AND like another commentator said... Anselmo was a monster and Rex Brown remains underrated. Precious memories... I seen PANTERA 7 times and I feel so lucky. Peace be with you all! Revolution is our name....

    I agree 100%. And that’s one of MANY reasons I love this band so much. It’s always been them since the beginning (other than Phil). They play in sync with each other that other bands just don’t seem to have. And that’s most likely the reason they wouldn’t just replace Phil. If 1 person was gone. The band was gone. I don’t think they could ever build that kind of chemistry with anybody. But back to Rex. He is probably the most underrated bassist that’s ever played. I personally feel like he’s been robbed because of that. Dude is straight god status on the bass.
