Pankaj Mishra: The Shoah after Gaza

A powerful Western narrative holds the Shoah to be the incomparable crime of the modern era. But we find our moral and political consciousness profoundly altered when Israel, a country founded as a haven for the victims of genocidal racism, is itself charged with genocide. What is the fate of universal values after Israel’s collapse into violent nationalism?
Pankaj Mishra delivered his lecture as part of the LRB's Winter Lecture series at St James's Church, Clerkenwell, London on 28 February 2024.

Thank you Pankaj This is an outstanding testimony to stand out for the truth in 21st century today. Palestinians do not need Western and American support from their political leaders because Palestinians have received more than enough recognition from common people from All over the world. In Britain alone, 700,000 protesters came out every week to remind Israel you have lost your soul and you are now left a wounded animal in the Middle East. Thank you 🙏

And one is nothing like the other. The Shoah was an effort to kill every Jew in Europe that largely succeeded. The Nakba can be compared to the expulsion of the Sudetenland Germans from Czechoslovakia in 1945-46, or the expulsion of the Greek population from Anatolia in 1922-23.

Nakba, originally referred to the FAILURE of the Arab states to destroy Israel. This is evident if you read the press of the day (in Arabic). It was later transposed to mean the "plight of the Arab Palestinians".

As a south african born jew of russian decendants, I always felt something was not right...how did I reconcile loyalty to a tribe of co-conspirators against differently coloured humans, with a victim history ? I grew up with apartheid and left the country of my birth, for its depravity...Only to witness this same depravity metered out on a people also of colour, in a land supposed to protect the right to exist....thank you for clearing up my doubt and ambivalence....

I have just read the lecture too. Outstanding intellectual interpretations of Jewish past and present. Pankaj brought new insights into the idea of ‘antisemitism’ and its implications. Israel lost its human dignity and human pride while using extreme violence against women and children to show that Israel has no respect for humanity in this conflict. A large number of Jewish citizens in Israel continue to support the violence and destruction of Palestinian’ homes, Mosques, Churches, schools and hospitals. This talk and lecture of Pankaj has recorded the crime of contemporary Israel in a way that shows ‘can Israel live with human dignity with its close neighbours while being an oppressive force?’

Not much new for someone who has been following the evolution of Israel with a critical eye over decades, but a good summary. The Shoah was not unique, although the European colonialists were usually slaughtering people in the process of extracting value from them, justifying it post facto by rationalizing their victims as subhuman. The contrast between South Africa under apartheid and Israel is instructive. The racist government of South Africa relied on hyper-exploited labor from the Africa population; Israel has purged Palestinians from participation in their economy to the extent possible, replacing them with immigrants from many countries, to avoid any shadow of need for their presence to interfere with their extermination.....

YES, it is affecting all of us throughout the world and I'm glad you have said that. The first 3 months, I kept thinking I was having a ❤️ attack, my heart hurt so badly, and I am older so that feeling was not far fet he'd. Finally I got past that and now I'm becoming numb, but not quite, not quite. I live in a small town where NO one even discusses it. FOR a long time NO one even knew it was happening. IT'S in Texas, Central Texas, where I live and it's just NOT kosher to discuss anything political. BUT this is NOT political. THIS has to do with human beings, with humanity, with humanism as described by the Greeks over 2000 years ago. THIS has to do with TRUE democracy, NOT the fake democracy of the zionist state are the sort of democracies of the West. Israel NEVER had a democracy. IT WAS DUE TO SIN THAT THE ISRAELITES WERE FORCED BY THEIR GOD TO WANDER THE EARTH AND IT IS IN SIN THAT THEY CREATED THE ZIONIST STATE AND IT IS BY SIN THAT THEY CONTINUE THE MASSACRE UPON AN INNOCENT PEOPLE. ISRAEL has always been engaged in the SHOAH. I realize listening to this man speak that the "never again" was a fake & a cover up for engaging immediately in a SHOAH of another people. And they have gotten away with it for 3/4's of a century. AND they are still getting away with it. YOU may ask WHY? The answer has NOT yet been exposed and I hope younger people than me will do the research and begin writing immediately everywhere the TRUTH. On blogs,on podcasts, on the walls of buildings, messages dropped from helicopters in the Zionist state, in film. Of course the Jews like Steven Spielberg are yesterday's garbage and we need new ones to create new narratives that are the TRUTH rather than lies. SO WHAT IS THIS TRUTH? The ONLY thing the Israelis create is spyware and they've infiltrated all the countries, especially the UK, by selling their spyware and thus they have a hold on all these countries just as Jeffrey Epstein, an agent of the Mossad tho the elites will not admit it, had a hold on all the powerful people throughout the world, especially in the US and the UK. WHERE do you think he got his millions and millions of dollars? THE MEDIA PONDER THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN ALTHOUGH THE ANSWER IS OBVIOUS. IT was from Israel. HE was a Jew and he worked for the Mossad. HE is dead but the MOSSAD continues to work throughout the nations of the world. The bi-national zionists work in governments from the local to national levels, influencing legislature, such that 36 states in the United States have passed a law that it is a crime if you say anything critical of the zionist state. The power & the control they have over the West is this and add to that the millions & millions they give to influence races & THIS is WHY the West will NOT cease to sell them armaments to commit a genocide on another semitic people & give them diplomatic cover while they commit genocide before our eyes. It is now up to the people of all the countries around the world to boycott anything dealing with the zionist state and the people there in. This includes all the cultural events; all the sport events; and anything else that occurs that involves Zionists must be boycotted or the zionists must be expelled immediately from that event. Back to the evidence we have that has not been written such that people can see it on a daily basis. This evidence of a silent shadow war on the governments of the West is the infiltration of the zionists into every aspect of the US & the UK & the EU by way of their governmental bodies, their media, their banking systems as well as donating foreign money to any candidate that will back this genocidal, apartheid zionist state. The Jews around the world deserve safety and the ONLY way they will get safety is by the destruction of the current Zionist state and the creation of the historic Palestine that will go by the name of either the Levant or Canaan --which are ancient names-- and that will embrace ALL peoples, ALL religions, ALL ethnic backgrounds in a TRUE democracy where everyone has civil rights and everyone has a passport for that country. This is the ONLY way safety will be created, NOT by criminalizing anyone saying something critical of the zionist state which is a genocidal apartheid state that is the furthest thing you could ever get from a democracy. Its existence, above & beyond the safety of Jews, also threatens ALL democracies around the world because if they lower themselves to the level of The zionists by backing them financially & diplomatically, they have destroyed their own democracy which is a type of government that must be recreated day by day or the totalitarians will take it down, as is occurring now as we speak.

Erudite, nuanced and poised. I hesitate to say brave. Because this is well over 100 days after the horrors of 7 October. So a sufficient time beyond some notional sympathy purdah. Now intellectuals, the best and, dammit, the bravest, are now free to look at Israel and the Shoah again. Refreshed. Just at the point of the turning world. The Fixity. The ancient hate, revivified.

The main question is, why is this not a New Yorker article. My assumption is that any writer worth his salt while write this and first submit it to New Yorker. My speculation is Pankaj submitted it to New Yorker and was rejected. If that the case then I'm sad. Someone please reassure me that I'm being paranoid. Because I love the New Yorker. In the future, would love to see Pankaj getting published in New Yorker again.

What a profound pity that an institution with such a great history as the Barbican Centre in London, has abandoned any sense of moral /ethical decency by cancelling this very discussion. History must not forget (nor forgive) such an appalling decision which effectively condones the current genocide.

The Jews attitude after being humiliated by the nazis is perfectly described by the Arabic poem: إِذَا أَنْتَ أَكْرَمْتَ الْكَرِيمَ مَلَكْتَهُ، وَإِنْ أَنْتَ أَكْرَمْتَ اللَّئِيمَ تَمَرَّدَ ie If you honor the generous, you will dominate him, and if you honor the vile, he will rebel.
