Panic Attacks & Panic Disorder Explained

Today’s video is called Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder Explained.
Panic attacks are a common problem faced in both primary care and psychiatric settings. Panic attacks differ from experiencing general anxiety or stress. Panic attacks are discrete episodes of sudden fear or distress accompanied by at least 4 of the 13 common symptoms that will be described in today’s video.
Also important to note is that experiencing panic attacks does not automatically equal having panic disorder. Panic attacks themselves can be a symptom or a result of other issues like other medical or psychiatric conditions or the consequences of other substance or medications. Today’s video will also briefly cover the actual diagnostic criteria for Panic Disorder.
Panic Disorder affects approximately 2.7% of adults in the U.S. in any given calendar year and is roughly twice as common in women compared to men, which may possibly be attributed to some underreporting of this issue in men.
Hopefully this brief overview gives you a basic understanding of what a panic attack is and what the diagnostic criteria for panic disorder is.

Why can't I find a doctor like this? People say ask for help. When I do they try to medicate me. I need to know so I can work on them.

Oh my gosh, yup, this is me to a tee. Comes all of a sudden, and I get scared, light headed, feel like I'm going crazy. The fear is awful. This happens about once a month but in general I have general anxiety disorder and on medication. For the most part it is under control and I do get anxious in crowds, in traffic, sometimes when I am excercising and I work out too hard and my heart is beating fast. I can't say it controls my life because it isn't but I need to calm myself when this happens. Sometimes I take Xanax which I know is not good and addictive, but Ive been on it for so long that even my PsychNP says I will likely be on it for life. I also take Lamictal, and Quietiapine before bedtime which helps me sleep. Brain works overtime, I overthink, it is crazy. My dad had the same issues for years. Sometimes I pace a little and do breathing excercises and they help a little. I don't remember having alot of this in my 20s or early 30s, seems to have increased with age. I hope to get better without taking a bunch of meds. I also take Magnesium. Any other advice from anyone? Thank you

Thanks for the video. Can you do a video on OCD? Specifically, pure-o. Since the pandemic started I've had countless intrusive thoughts about my loved ones, my sexuality and even weird things like consciously breathing.
