Panhard ERC 90 | The small but deadly armoured car of France

Ғылым және технология

We are investigating the ERC 90, the successor of the Panhard AML. #panhard #erc90 #armouredvehicle
Why did Panhard develop the ERC 90?
What are the differences between the ERC 90 Lynx, ERC 90 Sagaie, and ERC-2 Sagaie 2?
What are the other variants of the vehicle?
Why is France replacing the ERC 90 with the EBRC Jaguar?

Welcome to our new content. As the Weapon Detective, we are investigating modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about older weapon systems. In our videos, we tell their epic stories which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. In our videos, you can find technical information as well as historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future would be like. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

How does the small chassis handle firing the heavy turret? Wouldnt it too lift too much and lose accuracy from the recoil?

Fact: during the Bosnia-Kosovo conflict of the 1990’s, Western European nations sent peacekeepers to Bosnia to deter Serbian agression and genocide. For a short while, Serbia decided to confront these forces (including US forces), and in one such fight a Serbian T-54/55’s decided to take on French ground forces. An ERC 90 went after a T-54 and shadowed it in the narrow streets where the T-54 couldn’t maneuver effectively. The ERC 90 took it out.

Thanks to its small size, light weight and great speed, an Erc 90 can face a superior armored vehicle if the terrain allows it, as in this case, a city, or it could also be a hill Or a forest, and on top of that thanks to the power of its 90mm Spanish-Swiss turret, which has incredible penetrating power.

Can't go wrong with sticking the largest canon you can on the lightest vehicle that can take it.

Especially in the asymetrical wars in Africa and the Middle East where much of the opposition (Insurgent groups) uses modified (re: lightly armoured) civilian vehicles, or older model armoued vehicles. Plus it is low cost and lightweight, so it can get to places fairly quickly and not break the bank of the nations using it.

The ERC90 is a very good compromise for what it was intended to do. I only served with the petrol engine version, that has its issues. The canon is great and very precise, only hampered by its electrical turret motors that is not ideal.

I think France is a very interesting case on how to build an expeditionary army on a budget, it doesn’t have the US level of funding so it build and use very specific vehicles for different role, it also prefers using wheeled platform a lot more than tracks as it is more efficient and low cost compared to the more robust tracked platforms.

An excellent vehicle for its time, rather made for reconnaissance or ambushes for the Western European theater. On the other hand, for secondary operations theaters like Africa, its tropicalized version does a very good job. But the machine was only worth its crew (and as it was often one of the 2 REC vehicles) the job was done. NB: REC; Foreign cavalry regiment.

In Mexico the ERC-90 Lynx it's use like a tank, and of course it isn't the way must be use it. Also it hasn't never upgraded, basically is the same version of the 80's, it doesn't have night capacity or gun stabilitation (also the F1 gun can not fire APSDS ammo) and the engine is the same. The mexican army only repainted it with pixel camuflage. It's a great scout car but not for combat directly.

I think you missed the point Max. Its for patrolling vast lonely areas, is much faster than properly armored units, and would be hard pressed to stop a BMG. Against lightly armed insurgents, its great. Against the vast number of North African insurgents, its great. In Europe and and the Middle East, its great for recon and mischief.
